The Howling Mountain Overview

death howl walkthrough

Although The Howling Mountain is considered the final zone of the game, you can enter it as soon as you defeat Cantharsis, the Great Spirit of Distorted Hollows. It has multiple entrances from different realms and zones, but no matter where you enter from, the layout and enemy placement of the Realm remain the same.

The path through the Howling Mountain is fairly straightforward. There are no side quests, unlockable items, or encounters in the region for you to worry about. This zone is essentially a gauntlet, where you have to fight through multiple Elder Spirit encounters as you make your way toward the peak of the mountain.

The first Sacred Grove of the zone can be found after three encounters. This will also reveal the map of the Realm. To reach the second and third Sacred Groves, you need to complete four and five Elder Spirit encounters, respectively.

The Crystallized Ox Heart Totem, picked up from the Realm of Howling Shadows, is extremely useful here, as it allows you to heal after each battle without resetting the encounters.

When you enter a battle in the Howling Mountain, you can choose which Teardrop Overwhelmed Skill you want to use. You can choose between all four Teardrop Overwhelmed Skills, but only one can be active per battle. For most fights, we recommend sticking with the Heal Skill, as conserving Hitpoints is important in this zone.

Keep defeating enemies and continue heading up the mountain until you reach the third and final Sacred Grove of the Realm. The Great Spirit of this region will be just past this Sacred Grove

How to Beat Moon Eel, Great Spirit of The Howling Mountain

At first glance, Moon Eel can seem overwhelming. But compared to the boss fights of the previous Realms, this Great Spirit is pretty easy to take down.

When starting the battle, don’t stand on the center tile between its pincers. Standing in the center tile will cause the boss to fire a laser beam out of its Moon Eye that can take a huge chunk out of your HP.

The key to this fight is destroying the four Small Eyes on either side of its head. Once these eyes are destroyed, Moon Eel will no longer be able to fire its laser from the Moon Eye

You can then safely stand on the center tile and damage the Moon Eye, which is the only way to reduce the boss’s Health.

After three turns of attacking the Moon Eye, the boss will erupt outward from the arena, revealing six glands, called Roe. There are three of these glands on each side. You must destroy all of them in a single turn, or each will transform into a random Spirit and join the fight.

This phase is particularly tricky because you cannot reach the glands on the opposite side of the arena without some form of teleportation. Ranged cards can’t hit the glands across the arena, so having mobility options like Hunters Leap or Frog Leap in your deck can be very helpful.

Cards that deal damage without requiring line of sight, such as Meteor Strike or Sun Beam, are also very effective here.

After a turn, Moon Eel will reappear, and the Small Eyes around its head will reform. The strategy remains the same. Destroy the four Small Eyes, then attack the Moon Eye to damage the boss directly.

Defeating Moon Eel will trigger another cutscene. When it ends, you will immediately enter the boss fight against Sorg. Don’t worry, your Hitpoints will be fully restored at the start of the fight.

How to Beat Sorg

The fight against Sorg is unlike any traditional boss battle you have faced so far. Sorg appears as a ball of light that can teleport anywhere on the map.

Every time you play a card or move a tile, Sorg will also make a move. On top of that, you are limited to moving only one tile at a time. Because of this, the encounter feels less like a standard boss fight and more like a strategic game of chess.

Sorg only has three types of attacks, and you can always tell which one is coming by paying attention to the red danger markers on the tiles.

Lateral Attack

Sorg attacks in both horizontal and vertical directions across the arena.

Slam Attack

Sorg slams the ground, dealing damage to all surrounding tiles.

Teleport Attack

When you press End Turn, Sorg teleports to a new location, dealing minor damage as it reappears. There’s no way to avoid this attack, but it can be blocked by armor.

As for strategy, focus on bringing a deck that can deal high burst damage in a single move. We suggest using the Frostalite Totem, as it damages the boss every time you end your turn, along with some Echo effect cards to make the Totem stronger.

Sorg has only 30 Hitpoints and no way to heal during the fight. As long as you avoid his attacks and deal consistent damage whenever you find an opening, the battle will end in no time.
