Welcome to the Into Indie Games walkthrough of the Perils On the Sea quest in Expeditions: Samurai.

Expeditions: Samurai, developed by Campfire Cabal and published by THQ Nordic, is a party-based RPG game where your choices matter a lot. You need to survive a civil war in this game through different means. For more information, check out its Steam page.

As this is an RPG where you play as a team and your choices matter, we will provide you with a walkthrough of each chapter. Here in this guide, we will provide you with a walkthrough of the Perils on the Sea quest in Expeditions: Samurai.

Disclaimer

Expeditions: Samurai is currently available in Early Access, so you can expect to come across some bugs and glitches. Since this is not the final version of the game, there are still issues that need to be ironed out. During our playthrough, we ran into a few bugs, but none of them were game-breaking. That said, you may encounter an issue that could affect your experience. If you would rather wait for a more polished version, it may be worth holding off until the full release. On the other hand, if you are interested in jumping in early and sharing constructive feedback on what could be improved, your input could help the developer make the game even better.

Expeditions: Samurai – Perils On The Sea Walkthrough

The first quest in this game is going to be Perils on the Sea. However, before that, you need to create a proper character, so take your time with it. Then you need to make sure you select either the first or second difficulty, as this is going to be your first playthrough and you will not know what is going to happen.

Save the harder difficulties for later. Then begin the game, and your first quest in the game will begin. We recommend playing this game with a controller, as there are many inputs on the keyboard, and it can be very confusing.

See What Raina Needs In The Sick Bay

Rania in Expeditions: Samurai The Perils in the Sea quest.

As you get control of the player, head to the northwest side and check the stash for “A Response From the Queen.” Your main objective is to see what Raina needs in the sick bay. Go through the doors and then descend into the Orlop Deck, which will be on the left side.

Then head to the south, and you will find Raina there. Talk to her and select the first option, “Of course, you know I’m happy to help.” Then Raina will ask you which one of the sick men to save, as there is only enough medicine for one person. We chose the third option here, “Christ, Raina.”

Now, when choosing, you need to be mindful of some things. The question mark option is only there to have more conversation. It can sometimes be fun and sometimes not very fun. The circle proceeds the conversation, and the exit door ends it.

Choosing To Save One Of The Two Sick Men

Go with the last option here, as that will proceed the conversation. The next option will be about who to save. Kuijpers is a good cook, but it seems like he is somewhat useless on the ship. On the other hand, Zeilmaker knows his way when it comes to the sea, so saving him may be the better choice.

We went with saving Zeilmaker.

Grab The Medicine From The Nearby Chest

You now need to grab the medicine, which will be in the chest on the left side of Raina. So head there and open the chest to retrieve the medicine. Once done, it is time to open the inventory and equip the item in a tactical item slot, as you are the one who will give the medicine, not Raina.

So press the options button on the controller and then hover the R3 button to Tactical 1 and interact. Then you simply have to equip the medicine. Once done, your objective will update.

Use The Medicine To Save Either Of The Sick

You have already made a decision on who to save, but the game gives you another chance to change your choice. You can save anyone using the medicine you just equipped in your Tactical 1 slot. Now, use the D-pad to select the medicine, and when done, use R3 to hover over the target.

We went with our original decision and gave the medicine to Zeilmaker.

As you give him the medicine, Etinnine runs toward you to tell you something urgent. For that, we chose the first option.

Talk To Piet

Now head to the east side, and Piet will be right there. Talk to him. Piet wants to kill Claeszoon because he stole three days’ worth of rations. It seems like a bit of an overreaction, but before making a decision, you can hear both parties out, as one wants to spare him while the other wants to punish him with death.

If you choose the spare option, then you will need four points either in Persuasion or Insight, but for now, you will not have enough in either. That said, upon choosing the spare option, there is going to be one more option you can choose.

Then a fight will start, and the combat mechanics will be introduced to you.

Learning The Combat

Your first attack option is the Hook, which does 17-22 damage and also applies defense to yourself. The other ability is Cross, which does the same amount of damage, shreds armor by three points, and applies Knocked Down to enemies.

We went with the Hook. Then defeat the remaining enemy, and you will have to choose an option again. We chose the first option. Then another event will start, so select the last option.

Find Out What Johan And Antje Are Bickering About

So, from there, head left and climb to the upper deck, and Johan will be right there. Have a conversation with him and then choose the third option, “Antje makes a logical argument.” Select the third option and then follow it up with the second one.

Sneak Into The Treasure Room

You will now have Antje as a playable character. Head down to the lower deck and then go left. When you reach the destination, climb to the hold, and you will be near the treasure room. You will now be in stealth mode, so move the stick of the controller just a little.

Do note that even if Antje is noticed, you will have to restart, so make sure to move forward stealthily while hiding behind objects. Make your way to the treasure room from the right side after crossing the first lookout, and then you will have to lockpick the door.

Pick On The Lock

Your main character may not be able to pick the lock, so what you need to do is use Antje to complete the task. She will easily be able to do so, and when the door is opened, head inside. You now have to inspect the barrels. Upon inspecting them, you will find out that the captain has been stealing water.

Return To The Recreation Room

Now you have to return to the recreation room to share your findings with the rest. So, from the left side, climb to the Orlop Deck and then climb further to the upper deck. Then the conversation will be triggered, and as it does, you will have three options to choose from.

We went with the second option.

Confront The Captain

As you confront the captain with the others, there will be three options to choose from, and the decision will be yours. We went with the second option.

Get Downstairs To The Orlop Deck And Put Everyone To Work

Now you need to get down to the Orlop Deck and try to repel the attackers. So, from the right side, head down, and then Johan will start panicking, so choose the first or second option. We went with the second option.

Now there are going to be four tasks. Three of them are going to be optional, and one will be necessary.

Completing The Optional Tasks

Explosive barrel in Expeditions: Samurai, quest The Perils on the Sea.

To retrieve the pistols, head left, and as you go through the door, there will be a chest right there. Inside will be the pistols. Pick them up, and on the other side of the ship, inside the chest, you will find the bandages and other healing items. With that, one of the objectives will be completed.

Then, in the middle of the ship, you will find a red barrel. That is the gunpowder, so pick it up. There are going to be some barrels around the area that you can pick up as well. Pass those up the stairs on the left side, and two more objectives will be completed.

As you pass all of the barricades, the objectives will be completed. We could not complete the clean the cannons objective, as interacting with the cannons will simply progress the main task.

Then, as the tasks are completed, you will attack them, and later on, the Portuguese will board the ship. Then you will have a conversation with the ambassador and have to choose between four options. We chose the third option.

Find The Rutter And The Letters Of Marque In The Captain’s Room

finding the letters in Expeditions: Samurai The Perils in the Sea quest.

So, from there, head left and use the ladder to climb to the upper deck. As you do, there will be a boarder right ahead, so you need to perform a stealth takedown. Simply move stealthily near the boarder and perform the attack.

The boarder will have the Letter of Marque, so take it from his body and then interact with the chest on the right to get the rutter. After you hand over the documents to Antje, you will have a conversation with the Portuguese, so select any option you like. We went with the second one.

Can You Save The Captain And The Ambassador?

The short answer is no. No matter which options you choose, you will not be able to save either of them. If you go out, Cabral will shoot you, and the game will be over, so you will have to reload the recent save.

So, when Cabral asks you to come out, choose the first option. Then choose any of the first two options. After that, choose any option from the first three, as the outcome will not change. When the ambassador dies, choose the second option, and you will then have to fight the Portuguese.

Defeat The Enemies

Now what you need to do is move your characters to cover and then wait for the enemies to make their turns. When that happens, you may take some damage, as the enemies can move forward and deal some damage. It will not be much, so when your turn comes, use Raina’s first attack option to take out one of them.

We managed to take them out in just two turns, so this fight is not going to be difficult. Simply use your attacks on the opponents near you, and even if they are not nearby but you can reach them, taking them out is worth it.

Once you have defeated the enemies, the Perils on the Sea quest will be over in Expeditions: Samurai.
