Part 6: Steam Power

Although we learned how to operate steam engines in the Railyard chapter, let’s go over how to do it in the ship too.

You should spot the bellows, fuel stash, steam engine button, firebox, and meter right away. As you might guess, the ‘blue’ portion of the meter indicates optimal operation.

On the platform above, you’ll find a control for which direction the ship should move in. To the far left, the ship will move left, and to the far right, the ship will move right. If you place it on the dot in the middle, the ship won’t move.

Past the speed control, you’ll find the actual engine of the ship. This can get overheated if you operate the steam engine too rigorously.

To cool it down, you can use the hose that’s located to the left of the speed control. Just set the hose to the right so that it spews water, and aim the hose so that the water hits the engine (you should stand by the speed control). Be careful not to let the water from the hose hit the firebox, or you’ll end up putting out the fire!

You can fill up on fuel the old-fashioned way by bringing fuel to it yourself, or you can use the hook system too. The hooks are arranged just below the steam engine, on the lowermost deck of the ship. Attach your fuel items to these hooks and then press the button below just below the hose platform to load up your fuel.

Now, to get past the oil tanker bogie that’s blocking your way, you’re going to need to go full steam ahead.

Load up your fuel, then hit the button above the bellows and jump on the bellows repeatedly until the ship pushes the tanker aside. And with that, you’re off!

Remember you can cool down the engine with the hose. Fill up fuel as you run out to keep the engine going.

Also remember that you can always set up the sails again if you run out of fuel or if the mood strikes you.

You will, however, require steam power to push your way past buoys and some other obstacles. You should encounter a buoy shortly after leaving the railyard, for instance.

Near the engine, you’ll also find a dis-shaped radar. This shows you the general direction of fuel (represented as blue dots), if there is any in the vicinity. If you find yourself completely without any fuel items, check the radar and go swimming in the direction you see a dot.

If you don’t have any fuel and can’t see anything on the radar, then you’ll have to raise the sails and proceed that way.
