Welcome to the first part of our walkthrough for Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake.
Our journey begins when the twins, Mio and Mayu, arrive in the lost and very haunted Minakami Village. As soon as they take their first steps, things start to go south.

Prologue
After the opening cutscene, you take control of Mio standing in the middle of a dark forest. Miyu has disappeared. Continue walking forward along the path.
You’ll reach a fallen tree. Crouch to pass under it and keep moving forward till you trigger a cutscene.
Reunited with Mayu, Mio can now hold her hand to guide her forward. This is a new gameplay mechanic that lets you restore Health and Willpower later on.
Head downhill toward the village along the path on the right.
As you see a house in the distance, you’ll see someone go in through the door.
Head toward the house to trigger another cutscene. This is where Chapter 1 starts.
Finding the Flashlight and Camera Obscura
Chapter 1 starts with you in front of the Osaka House entrance. Head in through the front door.
Pick up the News Clippings from the floor. Then open the door leading inside the house to trigger another cutscene.
Once it ends, you’ll find yourself inside the Osaka House at the Sunken Hearth Room.
Go up the small set of stairs and turn left. You’ll spot a door that leads to the Kimono Room. Head into the room to spot a Butterfly Lantern.
You can save your progress, change Mayu and Mio’s Outfit, or Exchange Points to buy Items from a Butterfly Lantern.
When you’re ready, head out of the Kimono Room and go in through the door directly opposite, beside the large staircase. This leads to the Great Tatami Room.
You’ll spot an item on the ground. Pick it up to collect the Flashlight.
The Flashlight lets you see in the dark, but also makes you more visible to the Wraiths. It also allows you to spot items from a greater distance.
After picking up the Flashlight, you’ll find another item on the floor near the cabinet. Pick it up to collect the Woman’s Notebook 1.
Before leaving the room, turn around and head to the other side of the room. You’ll find the Woman’s Notebook 2 beside the bed.
Return to the Kimono Room with the Flashlight in hand, and you’ll spot an item on the ground near the window. This is the Myoga Motif Key.
Also, note the Two White Dolls on the shelf right next to where you found the key. These are Twin Statues, a type of collectible that unlocks new items from the Butterfly Lantern shop. But you need to find the Camera Obscura first.
Go into the small storage room inside the Kimono Room and turn left. You’ll find the Woman’s Notebook 3 here.
Go back to the Sunken Hearth Room and go east along the corridor from the entrance to reach the Dirt Hallway. You’ll see a Spirit walk into the passage on the left.
Turn right to spot the Woman’s Notebook 4 in a small cupboard. Pick it up and go into the passage following the ghost.
You’ll reach a door with a Myaga Motif Lock. Interact with the door to unlock it and head into the Altar Room.
As soon as you head inside, you’ll spot a note that you can pick up on the stack of drawers. Collect it to read the Camera Obscura Memo.
After reading the note, something will fall out of the rubble. Pick it up to collect the Camera Obscura.
The Camera Obscura is your primary weapon and puzzle-solving tool in Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake. You can also see your current Health and Willpower when you raise the camera.
As you progress through the story, you’ll unlock new Filters, Films, and features for it. You can also upgrade it using Prayer Beads later on.
After a short cutscene, you’ll see the tutorial pop-up for Camera Obscura. You’ll also find Village Photographs & Type-07 Films. Raise your camera and take a picture of Mayu.
The First Wraith Encounter
When you’re ready, head toward the door to exit the room. As you open the door, you see a malevolent spirit standing on the other side. This is a Wraith.
Wraiths are your enemies and will actively attack Mio and Mayu over the course of your adventure. Turn around quickly to spot the Wraith attacking Mayu.
Use your Camera Obscura to snap a picture of the Wraith to get its attention toward you.
Keep snapping pictures of the Wraith until it goes down.
Walk towards Mayu once the Wraith is defeated and press the prompted button to help her up. You can hold her hand to heal your HP if you took damage during the fight.
The Woman On the Second Floor
With the Wraith defeated and Miyo rescued, you can now head toward the exit. But as you try to open the door, you’ll see that it’s locked shut by a powerful force. This usually means the presence of a Wraith.
In the meantime, Mayu tells you to look at the second-floor hallway. Quickly turn around and use your Camera Obscura to snap a picture of the Spirit walking by.
Unlike Wraiths, Spirits aren’t hostile, and they disappear after a while. But if you’re quick, you can take a picture of them to earn points.
You’ll get a new objective: Follow the Woman’s Shadow. The main staircase leading up to the second floor is on the left side of the Sunken Hearth Room.
Before you head up, though, go into the Kimono Room and save your game. Then point your camera toward the Twin Dolls near the window so both are in frame, and snap a picture. The camera border will glow green when both dolls are in the frame.
Return to the Sunken Hearth Room and head up the big staircase on the left.
Osaka House Second Floor
Once you reach the hallway at the top of the staircase, you’ll spot an item on the floor, where you saw the ghost woman earlier. Pick it up to collect the Woman’s Notebook 5. You’ll also see the door on the left close.
Head in through the door. This takes you to the Osaka House Guest Hallway. You can snap a picture of a Ghost as soon as you walk in.
You’ll find a Herbal Medicine in the East Guestroom. Pick it up and head to the West Guestroom to pick up a Stone Mirror.
When you’re read, go past the West Guestroom to enter the Osaka House Study. Grab the Woman’s Notebook 9 from the floor to trigger a cutscene.
This puts you in another fight against a Wraith. The game will also teach you the basics of Fatal Frame, Shutter Chance, and Fatal Time at this point, along with evading and shaking off when you’re attacked. Take down the Wraith.
This will trigger another cutscene as Mio collapses. When you wake up, Mayu is gone, and Chapter 2 begins.
