Welcome to part 2 of our walkthrough for Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake.
As Mio fights off the Wraith in Osaka House, she gets a vision that causes her to collapse. But when she wakes up, she finds Mayu missing.

Leaving Osaka House
After waking up in the Osaka House Study, turn right. You’ll find a Herbal Medicine on the table. Pick it up.
Make your way toward the main section of the house. You’ll see the door to the Osaka House Boarder’s Room slowly slide open. There’s a wierd static noise coming from inside.
Head into the room and pick up the Spirit Stone Radio. You’ll also get the Spirit Stone Radio Memo along with Mayu’s Charm, outlining its uses.
Press the prompted button to listen to the Spirit Stone Radio with Mayu’s Charm.
When you’re ready, exit through the main door to return to the central section of Osaka House. You’ll see a short cutscene showing Mayu leaving through the front door.
Head down the staircase. You can photograph a Spirit at the window if you’re quick.
Go downstairs and head into the Kimono Room first. You’ll want to move quietly as a Wraith is waiting by the entrance at the Sunken Hearth Room. Before you enter the Kimono Room, pick up the Type-00 Film at the corner near the staircase.
You can catch another Spirit photograph here at the window. Pick up the Type-14 Film on the shelf where you saw the Twin Dolls.
Save your progress at the Butterfly Lantern and head back to the Sunken Hearth Room and take out the Wraith.
Once that’s done, head toward the exit and open the door. You’ll find some more Type-14 Film on the floor.
As you open the main door of Osaka House, you’ll spot a Spirit right outside. Use the Camera Obscura to snap a photograph quickly before it fades away.
When the Spirit fades away, you’ll find something on the ground. This unlocks the Paraceptual Filter for the Camera Obscura.
Following Mayu’s Vanishing Traces
The Paraceptual Filter has a unique ability to see Vanishing Traces, allowing you to uncover secrets of the past. Once you’ve unlocked it, turn left to spot Mayu’s Vanishing Trace walking off. You can snap a photograph of it.
Your goal for this part of the chapter is to follow Mayu’s Vanishing Traces. There’s an item on the ground up ahead near the bushes.
It’s an Herbal Medicine, but as soon as you try to pick it up, you’ll be grabbed by a Wraith. If you’re comfortable with the combat, you can take it down. Otherwise, avoid collecting the item.
Follow Mayu’s Vanishing Trace along the Osaka-Tachibana Path. You’ll pass by a ruined house on your right. There are a couple of items you can find inside the house, along with a Twin Dolls.
Keep following the main path until you spot a Butterfly Lantern up ahead. There’s another Twin Doll on the wall just before the lantern and a Twin Doll Findings note.
Save your progress and walk down the stairs. Pick up the Type-90 Film on the staircase leading down.
You’ll see Mayu walk through the gate toward a Spirit, and the door closes behind her. You can snap another photograph if you’re quick. Walk up to the large Tomonaki Gate and inspect it. You need to find the Twin Jizo Keys to open it.
Following the Crimson Butterfly
Turn around from the gate to spot a Crimson Butterfly flying past. You can take its picture if you want. When you’re ready, start following the Crimson Butterfly as it guides you toward your destination.
There’s a Wraith guarding the staircase. You’ll have to take it down before you can move on.
Keep following the Crimson Butterfly as it guides you past the alley leading to the Osaka House toward the Village Storehouse – Back.
You’ll trigger a cutscene when you enter the back part of the Village Storehouse and spot a boy peeking through a grilled window. Talk to the boy. For some reason, he refers to you as Yae. Take a picture of the boy after the cutscene.
There’s a Butterfly Lantern nearby. Use it to save your progress before moving on.
Obtaining the Twin Jizo Key (Left)
Turn around from the Butterfly Lantern to spot the Crimson Butterfly pass through a fallen log. You need to follow it, but you can also snap a new photograph of it.
You’ll enter the Kayano grassfield. It can be hard to spot the Butterfly because of the grass. But you can always see it on your minimap. Make sure you pick up the Prayer Beads as you crouch under the log.
You’ll be able to snap a picture of the Playing Girl Spirit. Just listen for the sound of the girl and follow the light above your camera to snap the photograph.
There’s another Butterfly Lantern to save your progress as you reach Okunohara. There are some Type-90 Films in the basket right next to the lantern.
Save your progress and keep following the Crimson Butterfly up a set of stairs. It will lead you to an old, broken-down house.
You’ll find another set of Prayer Beads and some more Type-14 Film in the room. When you’re ready, check the large red box to trigger a short cutscene.
A new type of Wraith will spawn in the house, and you need to beat it before moving on. Try taking a picture of its face to deal extra damage.
The Wraith has a chance to become Aggravated during this fight, which causes it to regenerate its health and gain damage reduction. You’ll know that a wraith has become Aggrevated if you see a dark red aura around it.
You’ll spot an item on the ground near the box that the Wraith climbed out of. Pick it up to collect the Twin Jizo Key (Left).
Obtaining the Twin Jizo Key (Right)
When you exit the house, you’ll see the Crimson Butterfly again, guiding you toward the next key. The Problem is there’s a wraith up ahead blocking your path.
You could, of course, fight it to clear the way. But if you want to avoid unnecessary fights, sneaking past it is also a valid option. Turn off your Flashlight and crouch to get past unsuspecting Wraiths without drawing attention to yourself.
Keep following the path till you go through a gate and loop back to the Tsuchihara House – Front area.
Continue moving forward until you spot another item on the ground. It’s the Woman’s Notebook 6. Picking it up triggers a short event where you see a Spirit walking by near the Osaka House – Front.
This marks the beginning of Miyako Sudo Side Story. Don’t forget to snap a picture of the Spirit before it disappears.
Keep following the Crimson Butterfly along the Osaka-Tachibana Path. You’ll see a group of Wraiths materialize up ahead. You could fight them.
But the better solution is to get inside the broken-down house on the right and wait for them to pass by. Once they’re gone, head back on the path and follow the Crimson Butterfly along the left path.
The Crimson Butterfly will lead you across a bridge and up a set of stairs to reach the Kureha Shrine – Grounds.
You can explore this area for some loot. There’s a set of Prayer Beads and a Herbal Medicine, among other things, at the back. When you’re ready, head inside the Shrine.
There’s a Butterfly Lantern here you can use to save your progress, along with some other loot. You’ll also find a Glowing Blue Crystal that you can use with the Spirit Stone Radio at the altar.
Go to the far-right side of the room to spot a hole that you can crouch through.
This takes you to the backside of the shrine, and you can grab the Twin Jizo Key (Reft) through the grill.
Catching Up With Mayu
After collecting both keys, walk toward the exit of the Kureha Shrine. You’ll be able to photograph a Spirit walking by through the window from the main section of the room.
You’ll get ambushed by a Wraith as you try to open the main door. Take it down.
Work your way back toward the Tomomoki Gate. You will have to sneak past the group of Wraiths you saw earlier, just before the Kiryu-Tachibana Path leading to the gate.
There will be another Wraith waiting near the Butterfly Lantern up ahead. We suggest sneaking past it.
Interact with the gate, and since you have both keys, it will unlock.
If you manage to pick up all the Village Reports earlier, you’ll see a Spirit approaching the Kurosawa House as you reach the Whispering Bridge.
Walk across the wooden bridge. You’ll be able to pick up a Green Crystal along the way. This one contains the thoughts of the Sunken Woman.
Just past this point, you’ll be able to photograph the Spirit of the Floating Woman in the water on your left. As soon as you do so, it will jump out and attack you, transforming into a Wraith.
Unlike the other Wraiths, this one is much more dangerous and will float around the bridge trying to dodge you. It’s a tough battle, but nothing you can’t handle.
After defeating the Wraith, walk up to the end of the bridge. You’ll find a Sacred Water up ahead. Pick it up and then open the door to enter Kurosawa House.
You can photograph a Spirit as soon as you enter the Kurosawa House – Grounds. There are some items scattered in this area.
You’ll find Mayu’s Charm 2, a set of Prayer Beads, a Herbal Medicine, some Type-90 Films, and some Type-14 Films. There’s also a Spirit you can photograph near the Type-14 Films.
When you’re ready, head inside the Kurosawa House through the main door to trigger a cutscene. This is where Chapter 3 starts.
Side Stories are optional content in Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake that builds upon the existing lore of the universe. Completing them offers new Charms to equip on Mio. But none of these quests are essential to progress through the game.
Side Story: Miyako Sudo Walkthrough
You can trigger the Side Story by heading to the front of Osaka House and capturing the picture of a Spirit heading up the path toward Misono Hill.
After activating the quest, make your way back to the Misono Hill. It’s the same hill where you first found Mayu at the start of the game. You can use the Paraceptual Filter to spot the Vanishing Trace of the Spirit guiding you toward the top of the hill.
You’ll see the Spirit looking down at the village while standing at the same spot where you found Mayu standing. Take a quick picture of the spirit.
Then head toward it to spot an item near its feet. Pick it up to collect the Woman’s Notebook 7.
Once that’s done, head back downhill towards the Osaka House. There will be a Wraith here that you’ll need to take down before you can progress.
If you keep your Flashlight on as you proceed downhill, you’ll find Sacred Water along the path.
When you reach the Osaka House – Front, you’ll see a Spirit peeking through the window of the house. Snap a photograph quickly.
Head inside the Osaka House and make your way toward the Altar Room, where you found the Camera Obscura earlier. You’ll spot another Spirit in the Dirt Hallway that you can photograph.
As soon as you enter the Altar Room, snap a photograph of the two Spirits on the left side.
Walk up to where you saw the Spirits before they disappeared to find Woman’s Notebook 8.
Go back to the Dirt Hallway and follow it to the end to spot the Spirit walk into the locked room up ahead. The door will open for you once the Spirit enters. Go inside.
Pick up the Woman’s Notebook 10 from the floor and the stack of Type-90 Film. Then move forward to spot the Spirit once again on the veranda. Snap a photograph.
After the Spirit disappears, you’ll be attacked by a Wraith.
After defeating the Wraith, walk out to the veranda where you saw the Spirit disappear to find a second piece of the Broken Zoisite. This completes the Side Story.
Before moving on, explore the area thoroughly. There is a Twin Doll statue on the veranda, and a set of Prayer Beads and Sacred Water in the garden area. You can also find a second set of Prayer Beads in the cabinet in the area where you fought the Wraith.
Side Story: Masumi Makimura Walkthrough (Part 1)
As you’re about to exit the Osaka House after completing the Miyako Sudo Side Story, you’ll see a Spirit walking out of the house. Snap a picture of the Spirit and pick up the Man’s Note it leaves behind to activate the Masumi Makimura Side Story. You’ll also get the Broken Sard when you start the quest.
To complete this Side Story, you have to find four Village Reports spread out across the area.
You’ll find Village Report 1 across the bridge on the path to Kureha Shrine. Photograph the Statue Investigator Spirit and pick up the report from where it was standing once it disappears.
To find the Village Report 2, head back to the Minakami Village Tsuchihara House – Front and look toward the well near the ruined houses. You’ll find the Well Investigator Spirit here.
The Village Report 3 is located at the Kureha Shrine – Grounds, right in front of the Kureha Shrine door. You’ll be able to photograph the Spirit of the Man Searching Grounds while you’re at it.
The Village Report 4 is found at the top of Misono Hill, where you found Mayu at the start of the game. You can photograph the Man Investigating the Hilltop Spirit at this location.
Picking up the final report will also give you the Village Report 5 item, and you’ll have to investigate Kurosawa House next.
