Leaving the Kurosawa House

The chapter starts outside the jail cell in the Kurosawa House Storehouse. You can take a photograph of Confined Mayu in the jail cell. When you’re ready, go through the door leading right.

You’ll find some Type-61 Films in the broken jar on your right as soon as you walk through the door.

Continue heading along the passage till you reach a door. Head through and down the stairs to reach the Underground Cellar.
This area is pretty empty apart from some Type 14-Films in a basket near the entrance.

Keep moving forward. You’ll see a set of stone stairs on the other end of the room. As you head toward it, the Kusabi barges in from behind.

Continue running till you reach a locked door at the end. Since you’ve got the Mallet Key at the end of the last chapter, you can unlock the door.

This takes you to the Kurosawa House Grounds. But the Kusabi is still on your trail.

Run toward the Whispering Bridge, get across, and go left from the door. The Tomonaki Gate is locked for now.

Crouch down and hide in the bushes till the Kusabi stops looking for you. If you’re quick enough, you’ll be able to stay unnoticed.
Returning to Osaka House

Once the Kusabi is gone, we’ll have to make our way back to the Osaka House. But there are a few things here that we can do first. Right next to the bushes, you’ll find a Wet Memo on the ground. Pick it up.

You’ll also notice the Toggle Photo View option, which means there’s something hidden here that you can uncover using the Exposure Filter.

You can create a bridge that connects to the section across the water by snapping a picture. This is the Ukishima Bridge.

This leads you to a statue up ahead. There’s a Prayer Bead you can pick up on the left in this area. Pick it up and then return to the Tomonaki Gate.

You can snap a photograph of the Drowned Woman Revenant using the Exposure Filter as you get on the Ukishima Bridge. Doing so will give you the Drenched Memo.

The Tomonaki Gate is now open. You’ll be able to capture a Spirit photograph as you get to the large stone staircase leading to the bridge.

Continue heading toward the Osaka House until you spot a Crimson Butterfly fluttering away. Follow it.

It will lead you to the Village Storehouse – Back where you found the boy who kept calling you Yae. There’s a Weeping Woman Spirit you can photograph in front of the locked door.
It will drop the Butterfly Diary 10 when it disappears. Pick it up

Talk to the boy at the Village Storehouse – Back. He’ll tell you where to look for the key to unlock Mayu’s cell.

With that done, you can just run to the Osaka House – Entrance.
Finding the Rustic Key

Save your progress at the Butterfly Lantern in the Kimono Room. Then head to the Altar Room, the same place where you found the Camera Obscura.
You can photograph a Spirit as soon as you enter the Altar Room.

When the Spirit disappears, aim your camera at the altar on the right and use the Exposure Filter to reveal it.

Interact with the altar. You’ll now have to solve a short puzzle.

There are four discs that you can rotate, and another disc at the center. Each disc has four leaves with different colors and patterns.

You need to arrange the discs so that the leaves of the outer discs touch the same pattern/colored leaves in the center disc. Reset the puzzle and follow the sequence below to solve the puzzle:
- Rotate the top left disc three times.
- Rotate the bottom left disc two times.
- Rotate the top right disc two times.

Solving the puzzle reveals a hidden staircase in the Altar Room. This will take you to the Deep Path. Head down the ladder.

You’ll reach a dark tunnel. It’s a pretty small area, and there are some items scattered here that you can pick up. We’ll guide you straight to the Rusty Key for now.

Go forward and turn right at the first fork. Collect the Herbal Medicine from the ground up ahead and continue moving forward, hugging the right-side wall.

At the next fork, past some Type-61 Films, go left. If you spot some Type-14 Films on the ground, you’re going in the right direction.

If you take the right path instead, you’ll find an item near a dead end. This is a Prayer Bead, but a Wraith will ambush if you try to pick it up.

You’ll see a Spirit as you keep moving forward. Head past the wooden beams up ahead. You can crouch under them.

This will take you to a small chamber. There’s a Lunar Incense along with some Type-14 Films on the left. Open the container in the center for the Film Reel 3.

The final box on the right contains the Rusty Key. Pick it up to trigger a cutscene.
Returning to Kurosawa House

You’ll now have to fight a new type of Wraith called the Mourner. These Wraiths are blind but have greatly enhanced hearing, which they will use to hone in on your location.
Take down the Mourner and start making your way back to the upper floor of the Osaka House.

You’ll have to fight one more of these Wraiths near the ladder before you can escape Deep Path.

When you return to Osaka House, make your way toward the exit. You’ll see a Dragged Shadow Spirit that you can photograph as you reach the Sunken Hearth Room.

As you head outside, Mayu notices that the Village seems darker. Continue heading toward the Kurosawa House.

The Kusabi will come in as you approach the Butterfly Lantern in the Kiryu-Tachibana Path.

Run back to the ruined house where you hid from the three Wraiths in Chapter 2 to avoid getting caught. Continue moving again once it passes by.

You’ll be ambushed by the Sunken Woman Wraith when crossing the Whispering Bridge. Take her down and continue on your way toward the Kurosawa House.

As you reach the grounds, turn right and take a photo of the three Spirits here. Pick up the Green Diary 1 and Broken Phosphophyllite on the ground afterward to trigger the Ryozo Muntaka Side Story.

Take the door leading to the Underground Cellar and make your way to the Storehouse. You’ll have to fight another Wraith here.

When you reach the Storehouse, save your progress and interact with the door to unlock it.

Mayu has disappeared once again. You can see her Spirit at the table and can snap a photograph.

Go inside the cell and pick up Mayu’s Charm 4 from the ground and Mayu’s Note from the table. This will also trigger a cutscene.
Catching Up With Mayu in Kurosawa House

Once the cutscene ends, head out of the jail cell. You’ll see a Spirit outside the door. Snap a photograph of it to trigger the Sae Kurosawa Side Story. Pick up the Broken Flourite when the Spirit disappears.

When you exit the jail cell, you’ll see Mayu’s Vanishing Trace walking along the Cloth Hallway. Follow it to the end till you reach the Storage Room.

Here you’ll see Mayu heading toward the entrance of the Kurosawa House. But the door leading from the Storage Room to the Entrance is locked.

Head up the stairs to reach the Master’s Chamber. Then continue making your way toward the Entrance. You’ll have to fight a Wraith at the Main Hall.

As you try to open the door to the Entrance from the Ombre Hall, you’ll be ambushed by two more Spirits. Take them down.

From the Entrance, make sure you unlock the door to the Storage Room using your Radiant Filter’s Special Shot.

Head toward the main door of the Entrance and unseal it using your Radiant Filter. Head outside.

Once outside, you’ll see Mayu’s Vanishing Trace once again, heading toward the Whispering Bridge. Follow her.

Continue moving forward, and as you reach the staircase past the Tomonaki Gate, a cutscene will play out. This marks the beginning of the next chapter.
Side Stories: Seijiro Makabe Walkthrough (Part 1)
The Seijiro Makabe Side Story spans multiple chapters. We triggered the quest when we revealed the hidden suitcase in the Kurosawa House Guest Room back in Chapter 3, and can now progress since we’ve completed Chapter 4.

The first objective is to investigate the Osaka House. You can complete this part when you arrive at the location to find the Rustic Key for Mayu.
Head to the upper floor toward the Osaka House Study to find a Spirit sitting by the table. Snap a photograph of it.
Go near it once it disappears and pick up the Folklorist’s Note 5.
The rest of the quest continues after Chapter 5 in our Fatal Frame II Remake Walkthrough Chapter 6 – The Remaining.
Side Stories: Masumi Makimura Walkthrough (Part 2)
Continued after part 1 in Fatal Frame II Remake Walkthrough Chapter 2 – The Twin Maidens. You can complete the quest once you’ve unlocked the Radiant Filter and can access both the Kurosawa House and Osaka House.

From the Kurosawa House Main Hall, there’s a bloodstained door when you look right from the door leading to the Dirt Passageway. Remove the bloodstain with your Radiant Filter, then head inside.

You’ll be able to reveal a Revenant lying on the ground here. He will give you the Bloody Memo and the Bloody Ring.
For the next part, you need to return to Osaka House after completing Chapter 5 or before you head to Kurosawa House.

Return to the Osaka House, and you’ll see a Spirit entering the house. Snap a picture and head inside.

Head along the Dirt Hallway to spot the Spirit again walking toward the Back Room. Follow it.

As you enter the Back Room, a cutscene will play out. After this, you have to fight off two Wraiths, one after the other.

Once both Wraiths are defeated, head to where the Wraiths spawned from to find the other half of the Broken Sard and complete the Side Story.
Side Story: Ryozo Munakata Walkthrough (Part 1)
This Side Story triggers when you snap the Reunited Youth photograph in the Kurosawa House Grounds. When the Spirits disappear, you’ll find the Green Diary 1 and Broken Phosphophyllite on the ground.

To progress the quest, start by heading to the Kureha Shrine. You’ll see three Spirits heading up the staircase leading to the shrine. Snap a quick photo of them.

When you reach the Kureha Shrine Grounds, head up the steps and go to the back of the shrine.

You’ll see another Spirit that you can photograph. Pick up the item on the ground when it disappears. This will give you the Green Diary 3.
The rest of the quest continues in Fatal Frame Walkthrough Chapter 8 – The Waning Moon.
Side Story: Sae Kurosawa Walkthrough
This side quest activates when you unlock Mayu’s cell in the Kurosawa House Storehouse. When Mayu disappears, you’ll see a Spirit floating outside the jail cell. Snap a photograph of it and pick up the Broken Flourite to activate the quest.

Head to the Master’s Chamber upstairs, and you’ll see another Spirit heading towards the Guest Room via the Guest Hallway.

Follow the Spirit to the Guest Room, where you’ll have to fight a Wraith.

After defeating the Wraith, head to the Hina Doll Room and snap a photograph of the Spirit on the other side of the partition.

Go where you saw the Spirit and pick up the Butterfly Diary 5 from the floor.

Next, head to the Main Hall of Kurosawa House and use the Exposure Filter to snap a photograph of the Downcast Woman Revenant in the center of the room near the burnt cauldron.

Pick up the Broken Flourite on the floor to complete the quest.
