Fatal Frame II Remake Walkthrough Chapter 8 – The Waning Moon

Welcome to part 8 of our walkthrough for Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake.

Mio and Mayu are reunited once again. With the Octagonal Key in possession, the twins must make their way to the Village Storehouse in hopes of finding answers and a way out of this waking nightmare.

Reaching the Village Storehouse

The chapter begins as Mayu comes into Itsuki’s Room in Tachibana House. You’ll also get the Octagonal Key in your hand when the chapter starts.

Head toward the Heavenly Gate connecting the Tachibana House to the Kiryu House via the Tatami Wings in the second floor.

You’ll find the Chrysoberyl Spirit Stone on the bridge railing on your left. Pick it up and head through the door to enter the Kiryu House.

Take the stairs to reach the lower floor. You can head into the Projection Room from here to check out the Film Reels you found in Tachibana House.

There’s a Revenant right next to the projector that you can reveal using the Exposure Filter. Pick up the Violet Diary 4 she leaves behind, along with Film Reel 2 and the Broken Blue Crystal. This also activates the Akane Kiryu Side Story.

When you’re ready, leave the Kiryu House through the back door and save your progress at the Butterfly Lantern outside.

Start making your way to the Village Storehouse along the Tachibana House – Back dirt path. You’ll find the Broken Red Speckled Crystal on the ground in front of the locked door leading to the Tachibana House.

As soon as you pick it up, you’ll see a Spirit run into the house. The door to the Tachibana House also flies open, and you’ll activate the Chitose Tachibana Side Story.

Continue heading toward the Village Storehouse. This time we suggest taking down the three patrolling Wraiths at the Osaka-Tachibana Path. You’ll have to use this path multiple times, and taking them out means less stuff to worry about.

Interact with the locked gate to open it and head inside. This will trigger a short cutscene.

Photograph the Spirit of the Imprisoned Boy when the cutscene ends.

Head into the jail cell. There’s a Type-00 Film on the ground. Inspect the cabinet at the end to find the Tachibana Family Crest, Photo: Study, Village Map, and Bound Diary 3.

The Tachibana Family Crest is one of the four key items you’ll need to complete the next segment. Your goal now is to find the Tsuchihara, Osaka, and Kiryu Family Crests.

Exit the cell and head up the stairs for a Flourite 2 Spirit Stone before moving on.

Obtaining the Tsuchihara Family Crest

After exiting the Village Storeroom, go right, past the well, into the broken house at the corner.

You’ll see the Spirits of Children Plotting Mischief. Snap a picture and pickup the item on the ground to collect the Children’s Note 4.

After this, Mio turns around automatically, and you can see the same Spirits running to the left.

Follow them to reach a locked door.

Make your way to the Minakami Village Tomonaki River – Shore where you’ll find a bloodstained door. Open it using the Radiant Filter and head through.

This takes you to the Minakami Settlement area. Continue forward to reach the Minakami – Alleyway. You’ll hear the children’s Spirits as you reach the location.

Now, you have to go around the Alleyway and snap the picture of three Revenanants of the Spirits playing hide and seek with you.

Simply walk around the Alleyway till you hear the sound of the Revanant and use Camera Obscura‘s indicator to pin point its location.

Once you manage to catch all three children, you’ll get the Tsuchihara Family Crest.

But you’re not out of the woods just yet. Once you pick up the crest, the three Children will attack you all at once. Take them down and exit the area.

Obtaining the Osaka Family Crest

Make your way back to the Osaka House. If you’ve taken out the patrolling Wraiths, you shouldn’t face any additional enemies along the way.

Go up the stairs and head to the Osaka House Study room.

Aim your camera at the two bookshelfs straight from the door and use the Exposure Filter to reveal a hidden chest.

You’ll find the Osaka Family Crest inside.

A Wraith will attack you from behind. Take it out and head downstairs.

You’ll get ambushed by another Wraith when you try to open the main door. Exit the Osaka House after defeating it.

Obtaining the Kiryu Family Crest

Head toward the Kiryu House – Front and you’ll see the Spirit of the girl with the Crimson Butterfly near the door.

Head into the Kiryu House and go straight for the Altar Room. You’ll see a Spirit wandering into the room once you reach it.

Walk to the altar and pick up the Doll Maker’s Note 6.

Turn around to spot the Spirit of the Doll Hiding Family Crest.

Use the Paraceptual Filter and follow it. It’ll lead you to a hidden room on the second floor.

Head into the hidden room and loot the chest for the Kiryu Family Crest. You’ll also get the Bloodied Note.

As you exit the hidden room, you’ll have to fight the Doll Maker again. After the fight, you can take the photo of a Revenant in the hidden room to collect a Prayer Bead.

Exit the Kiryu House when you’re ready to move on.

Reaching the Old Tree

With all four Family Crests in your hand, make your way to the Kureha Shrine. Head toward the tree past the stairs.

You’ll see a Spirit standing in front of a tunnel under the tree.

Follow the Spirit’s Vanishing Traces up the steps toward the Kureha Shrine.

You’ll have to fight three Veiled Priests at the Kureha Shrine Grounds.

Head into the Kureha Shrine once the fight is over. You’ll see the Spirit again, heading to the back of the altar.

Run to the back to spot an item on the ground. Pick it up to collect the Folklorist’s Note 6 and Photo: The Old Tree.

Return to the large tree outside Kureha Shrine where you first saw the Spirit. Use the Exposure Filter to reveal the tunnel and open the path to the Old Tree.

As soon as you do that, the Kusabi appears behind you. Grab Mayu’s hand and run through the tunnel to trigger a cutscene.

The Umbral Mound and Pinwheel Puzzle

When the cutscene ends, you’ll see Mayu lying down on the floor. You’ll also see a Spirit inspecting the mechanism on the left.

You can touch Mayu to trigger a short cutscene.

Inspect the mechanism. It has slots for the Family Crests you’ve picked up earlier. But there are five slots in total which means we’re missing a Crest. You’ll also get The Umbral Mound note after interacting with the mechanism.

Save your progress at the Butterfly Lantern. You’ll see the Spirit leaving the Old Tree through a tunnel.

Pick up the Folklorist’s Note 9 from the ground and take the tunnel to go outside.

This takes you to the Minakami Village Rear Path. Continue moving forward along the path till you reach a decrepit house. There’s a Mourner inside that you’ll have to fight.

This area beyond the house is called the Abandoned Graveyard and it’s filled with Mourners. You can sneak by them if you want, but at this point, they shouldn’t be too difficult to take down.

Expore the area thoroughly. There’s another run-down house at the end of the path where you can find a Type-00 Film.

You’ll eventually notice a path through the bamboo thicket. There are two stones on either side of the road.

Crawl through the thicket to reach a clearing. You’ll see a Spirit on the ground. There are some Type-90 Films here that you can pick up.

Aim your camera where the spirit was staring and use the Exposure Filter to reveal the Umbral Mound.

Pick up the Kurosawa Family Crest and Holy Mirror Memo from the ground before the Umbral Mound.

After this, Mio removes the safety from the camera just as the Kusabi comes and grabs you. Take a picture of the Kusabi quickly. This time you can actually damage it.

The Kusabi disappears after taking a hit. Make your way back to the Old Tree through the Abandoned Graveyard.

Interact with the mechanism to place the final Family Crest in the middle. Now you have to solve a puzzle. You already know how this one works.

To solve it, rotate the crests in the following order

• Bottom Left Crest: 2 times
• Top Right Crest: 1 Time
• Top Left Crest: 2 Times

This will trigger a cutscene. Interact with Mayu to help her get on her feet.

Exit the Old Tree with Mayu and walk up the steps toward Kureha Shrine. As you reach the top of the staircase, a cutscene triggers. The Final Chapter starts immediately after that.

Side Stories: Akane Kiryu Walkthrough (Part 1)

To trigger the Akane Kiryu Side Story, head to the Kiryu House Projection Room and photograph the Revenant of the Girl Remembering the Ritual using the Exposure Filter. Pick up the Violet Diary 4, Film Reel 2, and Broken Blue Crystal that it drops afterward.

After activating the Side Story, head to the Kiryu House Twins’ Room on the first floor. The Kiryu House should be empty, so you don’t have to worry about any Wraith ambush.

Aim your camera at the sitting area for the twins and switch to Exposure Filter. Photograph the Regretful Girl Revenant.

A Spirit appears in the room, staring toward the sitting area as soon as you reveal the Revenant. Snap a picture of it. You’ll also see a note on the ground.

Pick it up to collect the Violet Diary 5 and the Pale Purple Crystal

At this point, you’ll get attacked by a Doll Maker Wraith. Take it down.

Side Stories: Chitose Tachibana Walkthrough

Pick up the Broken Red Speckled Crystal from the ground in the Tachibana House – Back area to trigger this Side Story.

As the Spirit heads inside the Tachibana House, follow it. You can use the Paraceptual Filter to see its Vanishing Trace. You’ll have to fight off two Wraiths in the Tatami Room Hallway.

Take down the Wraiths and use the Paraceptual filter to keep following the girl. You’ll have to fight another Wraith in the Clock Hall.

Head up the stairs after defeating the Wraith and go into the Large Storeroom. The door will close behind you, and you’ll hear a girl calling for help.

Use the Exposure Filter to shoot a photograph of the Revenant Girl Seeking Help.

Pick up the Crimson Diary 5 from the ground and head out of the storeroom.

You can see the girl again, walking toward the Tachibana House Hallway. Follow her to the Tatamin Wings section.

As soon as you reach the location, you’ll be ambushed by two Wraiths. To make matters worse, everything will go completely dark. Take down the two Waiths.

Once that’s done, head into the storeroom connected to Tatami Wings – South, the same room where you found the Butterfly Key in the previous chapter, where you’ll find the girl’s Revenant. Snap a picture of it to revert the world to normal.

Pick up the Crimson Diary 6 afterward.

You’ll have to follow the Spirit once again. This time, you have to go back to Itsuki’s Room.

When you enter Itsuki’s Room, you’ll have to find the Wraith of the Girl in Crimson.

Take it down and snap a picture of the Revenant in this room.

Pick up the Bound Diary 6, Crimson Diary 7, and the second half of the Broken Red Speckled Crystal. This marks the end of this Side Story.

Side Stories: Ryozo Munakata Walkthrough (Part 2)

Continued after part 1 in Fatal Frame II Remake Walkthrough Chapter 5 – The Sacrifice.

As you’re about to leave the Old Tree with Mayu after completing the Pinwheel Puzzle, you’ll hear the sound of a Revenant coming from near the stone Buddha statues.

Use the Exposure Filter to reveal the Revenant.

Pick up the Green Diary 4 from the ground.

Go back to the Village Storehouse. You’ll see another Spirit inside the jail cell. Snap a picture of it before it disappears.

Pick up the Green Diary 5 and the Bound Diary 6 from the ground inside the jail cell.

Now you have to run back to the Misono Hill. You’ll spot the Spirit of the boy once again near the altar.

Pick up the Green Diary 6 and the second half of the Broken Phosphophyllite to complete the Side Story.

After completing the quest, three Wraiths will spawn nearby. So make sure you’re prepared to fight them off.

Side Stories: Seijiro Makabe Walkthrough (Part 4)

Continued after part 3 in Fatal Frame II Remake Walkthrough Chapter 7 – Sae.

Head to the Umbral Mound at the end of the Abandoned Graveyard, past the Old Tree.

Aim your camera at the Umbral Mound and snap a picture of the Revenant of Man Searching Umbral Mound.

You’ll find the Folklorist’s Note 10 on the ground afterward. Pick it up along with the second half of the Broken Lazulite to complete the Side Story.
