Gurei Walkthrough – Defeating The Main Bosses

A complete walkthrough of the main Kami battles in Gurei.

Welcome to the Into Indie Games walkthrough for the main Kami boss battles in Gurei. Gurei is an amazing boss rush game with a unique difficulty mechanic. You can fight the bosses in any order, but as you progress in your run, subsequent bosses start getting harder with new movesets.

This walkthrough features an optimal order in which you tackle the boss battles in Gurei, which allows you to progress efficiently. You can also learn more about the game on its official Steam page here.

1. The Catfish Kami

Gurei Walkthrough.

This is the first boss that you should fight when your run starts in the game. As soon as you spawn in the hub area, head left and descend at the end. Next, go right, jump, and continue following the path ahead to reach this boss.

Gurei Walkthrough.

The moveset is pretty basic, with the Kami having two major attacks. When the boss is going to bash its shield in, just dash away. Additionally, when the boss stomps on the ground, just jump to dodge the waves.

Play aggressively, and continue to attack the shield to break it. Breaking the shield stuns the boss, and this allows you to deal more damage. Defeating this boss will also unlock the shield upgrade, which is a great defensive buff early on in your run.

2. The Frog Kami

Gurei Walkthrough.

Now this is another easy fight that can be attempted early on in your playthrough. From the hub area, head left again, but this time jump up instead of descending. Continue heading left, and after descending twice, turn right. Keep following the path ahead to reach the boss.

This is a pretty simple fight, and you just have to defeat the insects here. Focus on the flying insects first and keep hitting the spiders in between.

Just dash away from the charged attacks of these insects, and you’ll be safe for the entire fight. You can see the attack animation coming, which will be your cue to dodge. You can also attack the spiders to interrupt their attacks.

Defeating this boss unlocks the healing upgrade, which allows you to regenerate health during fights if you’re quick enough and can find the openings.

3. The Monkey Kami

Gurei Walkthrough.

For your next boss, keep heading right from the hub area and dash through the hurdle in your path. Head left after jumping down and keep following the path ahead to reach this fight.

The boss really has one main attack aside from summoning clones. Whenever you see its attack animation, just dodge to the opposite side and keep dealing damage. Additionally, try to defeat the clones as soon as you can because the boss continues to summon them.

The game rewards you with the ability to create clones of your own during fights after defeating this boss. You can use these clones to distract bosses, giving you enough time to heal.

4. The Cat Kami

This is the first boss in your run that will prove more difficult than your previous encounters. Go left from the hub area and jump up. Use the platforms to keep going up and take a right from the bird statue. Continue following the path ahead and jump across the bridge to reach this boss.

The key to defeating this boss is not attacking, but waiting. The health bar continues to deplete itself; you just need to dodge the attacks. Focus on dashing away whenever the boss teleports and rely on your shield to block attacks too.

You will easily defeat this Kami once you solely focus on defense. Defeating this boss unlocks a revive upgrade, which gives you a second chance in battle; however, it is a timed revive. You’ll have to be quick during your second chance and defeat the boss before the timer runs out.

5. The Snake Kami

Take the same path as you did for the Frog Kami, but this time don’t take any rights. Continue heading left from the hub area until the very end to reach this boss battle.

The Snake Kami also has a pretty simple moveset, but it likes to chain attacks. You’ll have to dodge twice or thrice in succession before going on the offense. If you just dodge once and start attacking, the Snake Kami will get you with its combos.

Just perform long dodges in between combos and continue attacking in between to defeat the boss. Defeating this boss unlocks an attack upgrade that adds a finisher scythe attack at the end of your perfectly timed dodges.

6. The Dove Kami

For your next boss, follow the same path as you did for the Cat Kami. However, do not jump across the bridge this time. Instead, jump down and head right to reach your next fight.

At this point in your run, the Dove Kami will be a formidable foe to defeat. It has multiple moves up its sleeve and is really fast as well. You’re going to have to predict its attacks really quickly and dodge in the required direction.

When the boss teleports down on you, just dash left or right. Dash away from the AOE attacks as well and try to strafe through the incoming arrows. Go under the platforms to protect yourself from the arrow that targets the entire arena.

Defeating the Dove unlocks a long-range arrow attack and adds it to your arsenal. You’ll have to charge this move, but you can use it to attack from far away.

7. The Peafowl Kami

In order to reach your next battle, head left from the hub area and jump upwards at the end. Continue left and immediately after entering the next room, jump upwards. Continue ascending and head right when you reach the top. Once you spot the golden flames, make another jump to enter the boss arena.

Interact with the weapons inside to initiate the battle. The boss attacks with its swords and moving saws. Offense is going to be your best defense in this fight. Hit the sword and the saws with your attacks to deflect them whilst dealing damage to the boss.

Dash out of the way when the boss charges the AOE attack and strafe from the arrow attacks. You will get the air dash upgrade by defeating this boss, which gives you complete invincibility during the maneuver. However, once you use this dodge, you’ll have to wait on a cooldown to use it again.

8. The Raven Kami

Head left again from the hub area, jump up at the end, and continue left. After coming out of the hub, start ascending, but don’t jump any higher than the third platform. Continue left from here, and you’ll spot the location of the next boss.

The Raven is another formidable boss in the game, and you’ll need to study its attack patterns properly to defeat it. Dash is your best friend in this fight, and it will allow you to dodge almost all of the attacks if you time your dodges right.

Raven has three phases, and in every subsequent phase, the boss adds an additional attack to its combos. Keep moving around the arena as the boss is frequently teleporting after every attack. Defeating this boss unlocks the skill that allows you to counterattack when you get hit, dealing even more damage.

9. The Beetle Kami

The next Kami can be found just left of the arena of the Raven. The Beetle’s fight is a proper sword duel in which your shield is going to help you out. Try to time your shield with the attacks of the boss to parry them. Don’t rely on dash too much in this battle because the Beetle’s attacks are quick and cover a wide area.

Additionally, you don’t have to fully deplete the health of the boss to defeat it. Play aggressively and build the stagger bar of the boss to end the fight quickly. Once you defeat the Beetle, you will be rewarded with a new spear attack.

10. The Bull Kami

Gurei Walkthrough.
Fighting the Bull Kami in our Gurei walkthrough.

Keep heading right from the hub area to reach your next battle. The Bull’s attacks are pretty easy to dodge. Every move has a pretty forgiving windup animation that lets you prepare for a dodge, and most attacks only require dodging to the opposite side.

Just make sure to dodge into the boss when it slams down on the ground, which will not only allow you to escape the attack but also give you the chance to deal more damage. Defeating this boss adds a new ground slam attack to your moveset.

With the Bull fight complete, you’ll be officially done with all of the Kami battles in Gurei, which also brings an end to our walkthrough of the game.
