Essential Construction Projects

After resting in the bed, return to Aunt Marilyn and speak to her again. You’ll get a new set of objectives. She’ll ask you to talk to your Uncle Spencer near the River and also get rid of the barricade leading to the grain field.

Before heading out, go right to enter a small room. There’s a note on the barrel that you can check out.

Then interact with the Blueprint on the table to find Blueprints for five new items, including a Backpack that increases your carrying capacity.

Exit the house when you’re ready. Interact with the Construction Workbench on the right to start building.

The Rutherford Ranch serves as your main base of operations in I Hate This Place. You can farm raw materials and ingredients for different items from the different buildings you construct here.

For now, you can construct the following buildings:

For now, you should have enough materials to construct at least one of each building. There are plenty of barrels, crates, and containers in the farm where you can loot the required crafting materials.

If you’ve got the materials for it, go for two Water Pumps, two Chopping Blocks, and two Scrapyard. Start the projects, and after enough time has passed, the buildings will be ready to use. So let’s move on from now.

After speaking to Uncle Spencer, interact with the bridge on the left. You’ll need 7x Wood to repair it. If you don’t have enough, explore the nearby areas for logs or crates.

Finding Eddie’s Hut

Open the Quests (O on keyboard) tab in your diary, and click on the objective for the quest “A Wounded Deer Leaps The Highest”.

This will mark a location on your map where you’ll find Eddie’s Hut.

Start heading west from the bridge that you just repaired. You’ll notice a strange pod up ahead. This is a Spider Egg.

If you get near it, it’ll explode, and a bunch of tiny Spiderlings will attack you. But you can take them out with a single attack from your Baseball Bat. There are a few more Spider Eggs above you, but you don’t have to get close to them.

Before we move further, we’ll take a short detour. Head south, past the pod with insects, to reach a small camp. You can loot this place for some useful items. What we’re looking for are some snacks to refill our Food Meter.

Return to the main path and continue heading west, towards the map marker. You’ll see an apparition cross the path. It won’t attack you.

A few steps beyond this point lead you to a rope on the side of the hill. Loot the container and then climb up the rope.

At the top, head left to find Eddie’s Ghost standing in front of a hut. Loot the surrounding area and then head inside the hut.

Check the table for some Blueprints (Spear Ammo, Table), then head into the next room.

Interact with the glowing trophy on the wall.

Finding Out What Happened to Eddie

Interacting with the trophy teleports you to a different location. Pick up the glowing flashlight from the crate up ahead.

This is the first Ghost Story in the game. You don’t have to worry about your Health, Stamina, or Food Meter here. Continue forward along the path till you spot a person (Eddie) impaled by deer horns up ahead.

As you get closer, a door next to Eddie will start glowing. You need to figure out who or what killed him to complete the Ghost Story.

From here, continue following the path through the zone. Up ahead, you’ll spot a deer with antlers charging at you. If it hits you, you’ll get sent back to the start of the segment.

Use your Flashlight (left mouse button) to focus your beam on the deer to slow it down until it disappears.

Keep moving forward. You’ll notice that the path splits off into different directions through the field. Explore the side paths to find Eddie’s Ghost. When you get close, the ghost will disappear.

But you’ll find a note in its spot. Pick up each note as you go. They contain clues that you’ll have to use to piece together what happened to Eddie.

Explore all the side paths while dispelling the deer with antlers. Eventually, you’ll reach a hut. Check the note outside and head through the door.

There’s another note here that you can read. When you’re ready, interact with the door with tendrils under it.

The door has a combination lock. The code for the lock is one of the dates found on the notes you’ve been collecting. Check the Note tab in your diary to see all of them. Try out the different dates in the MM/DD format. So for July 18, you’ll want to try 0718.

NOTE: The correct code for the door is 0721.

After opening the door, head through the corridor to find another note on the table.

Reading the note, it becomes pretty obvious that Walter is the one who killed Eddie. Exit the hut and return to the starting area of the Ghost Story. Interact with the glowing door and choose your answer.

NOTE: You won’t be able to choose this answer unless you open the final note.

This will take you back to Eddie’s Hut in the real world. Loot the new container to find two more Blueprints (Spear Launcher, Greenhouse).

Exit the hut and make your way back to the Rutherford Ranch. You’ll find Uncle Spencer near the entrance to the house.

Speak with him and run through his dialogues to complete the questline.

Cleaning up the Ranch & Burning the Barricade

By the time you’re done with Eddie’s quest, the construction projects on the ranch should be complete. Interact all your harvesting buildings to start generating Scrap, Wood, Water, and other materials you’ll need later on.

Go to the Workbench and use it to craft some Molotovs.

Use the Molotovs to burn away the wooden rubble in the ranch. This will open up additional space for new construction projects.

There’s a Red Barn in the ranch, beside the house, that you can use to store additional items you don’t want to carry. Use it to store Wood, Scraps, and other Raw Materials. You don’t have to carry them to use them for crafting.

Head towards the river to spot a boat. You can use it to fast-travel to other zones once you unlock some more docks.

Follow the path past the boat, heading north to reach a wooden barricade

Throw a Molotov to burn away the barricade and complete the “Quiet Place” questline.

Head back to the house and rest to heal yourself back to full. Craft some food, and as much Ammo as possible before you head out.
