Welcome to the sixth part of our walkthrough for I Hate This Place.
We’ve explored the Fields north of the farm and found a giant hole in the ground. As we drop in through the hole, we find ourselves in yet another bunker for experiments using The Horned Man’s DNA.

Prepping for the Northern Bunker

The Northern Bunker is a relatively short zone. But there’s a difficult enemy that you’ll have to face at the end. So we recommend crafting a Submachine Gun before heading down. You’ll need two Snub Nose revolvers and 8x Parts to craft it, which you can easily make from all the Blueprints you’ve collected so far.
Ideally, you’ll also want to bring a few Molotovs and plenty of healing items with you before heading to the Northern Bunker. When you’re ready, head back to the Railway Building safe house.
Head to the hole to the north through the grain field. Interact with the post on the right to drop down. You’ll need to have a Rope in your inventory.
Finding the Pump Action Shotgun

After dropping into the Northern Bunker, you’ll spot a locked cabinet on your right. This contains the Pump Action Shotgun, but you’ll need a code to access it.

Continue forward. You’ll spot a door on your right. There’s a gate straight ahead, but it’s locked from the other side. Head in through the door.

Keep moving forward. The red pods up ahead will explode, breaking the crates and clearing a path for you to crawl through.

As you reach the door of the Mess Hall, you’ll hear some crashes from inside. There’s a Hazmat-Suit enemy in the next room.

Take it down from a distance before it can become a problem.

Head to the right side of the room to spot an electrical panel. Use your Taser to activate the panel and open the door.

Go through the door, and take out the Hand.

Break the crates on the left to reveal a vent that you can crawl through.

Follow the vent to reach the other side of the glass from the Mess Hall. Pick up the Blueprint and loot the area. Use the door on the left to return to the Mess Hall.

Go to the left side of the Mess Hall to spot another door. Head through it.

Check the note near the body up ahead. This is the code you’ll need for the locked cabinet with the Shotgun.

Go down from here to reach the locked gate from earlier. You can open it from this side.

Run back to the cabinet and use the code (2022) to unlock it and pick up the Pump Action Shotgun. This is a major upgrade over the Sawed Off with a larger magazine.
Facing Cassie’s Brothers

Run back to the body where you found the code and head left.

You’ll reach a corridor with red tendrils on the walls. Go down from here and through the door.

You’ll hear someone coughing in pain from the floor below. This is the mutated version of Cassie’s Brothers and you’ll be going up against them in a bit.
For now, move forward and use the Save Point to save your progress.

Keep moving along to reach an elevator. Use it to go to Floor -1.

After getting out of the elevator, you’ll want to slowly go left and up. If you’re quiet, the monster won’t notice you right away.

The lever just ahead lets you electrify the water puddle in the center of the room. This can deal a lot of damage to the monster right away. Be careful of the exploding red pods nearby.
You’ll want to use plenty of Molotov and your Submachine Gun or Pump Action Shotgun to keep the fight short. The monster can charge at you quickly, so make sure to move out of the way.

There’s a broken pillar on the right side of the room that you can use to kite the monster. You can even fire your weapons when crouched down under the pillar, and the monster won’t be able to reach you.
Finding Vermer’s Safe Keys

Once the monster is defeated, do a quick scan of the room. You can use the same lever from earlier to turn off the electricity to make it safe for you to pass through. At the front of the room, you’ll spot a large door with three red lights above it.
There are also three sets of wires coming out of the door.

These wires lead to three generators spread out across the room. Follow the wires and activate all three generators.

The door opens. Head through it and use the ladder to go back to the upper level.

Head through the door up ahead to reach another lab. Vermer’s Safe Key is on the table on your left, and there’s also a Pump Action Shotgun Blueprint on the table up ahead. Pick them up.
There are also two notes you can read on the two other tables. Read them.

Use the door on the right side when you’re ready to move on.

This brings you back to the first section of the Northern Bunker. We’re done here and can head back out the way we came.
Unlocking Vermer’s Safe

Now that we know what happened to Cassie’s Brothers, we can talk to her to complete her quest (Twin’s Fate). Unfortunately, completing the bonfire ritual, which we did in the previous walkthrough, causes Cassie to move away.

So head to one of the Boat Docks and fast travel back to the Swamp. Make your way back to the Flooded Bunker, east of the Church.

You can use the elevator to head straight to Floor -3. Run to the safe near the red monitors and interact with it.

Pick up the items inside.

Exit the Flooded Bunker and return to the Church. Talk to Father Matthew and tell him what you found.
Heading to the Coal Mine

The Coal Mine Maggie mentioned is on the western side of your map in a zone called the Forest. You can access it from the Ranch (across the bridge that you repaired when you first met Uncle Spencer), the Fields, or the Swamp. We suggest taking the Ranch route.

Before you do so, however, return to Rutherford Ranch and speak with Aunt Marilyn. She’ll have some new dialogues about Maggie and the Coal Mine.
Spend some time restocking your supplies. You should be able to craft the Riot Shotgun at this point. Make sure to craft a Flare Gun and stock up on Flares (effective against Spiders) if you can, Molotovs, and Mining Explosives.

Head to the bridge that you helped fix west of the Ranch. Go across the bridge and follow the path that takes you to where you found Eddie’s Ghost.

From here, follow the map marker to reach the entrance of the Coal Mine (Less Than Chaff In The Breeze Quest).

Be careful of the Jumping Spiders and Mutated Deers that are roaming around the zone. They can deal a lot of damage if they catch you unprepared.

When you get to the entrance of the Coal Mine. The path ahead is blocked by some rubble. Toss a Mining Explosive to open the path and head inside.
