i hate this place walkthrough

Welcome to the last part of our walkthrough for I Hate This Place.

With the Shedding Rite almost underway, we must act fast if we want to find Lou and learn the truth about what happened to Ellen’s Mother.

Note
This is part of our I Hate This Place Complete Walkhrough Hub, so we suggest starting there if you haven’t already.

For more information about I Hate This Place, check out their official website here.

Stopping the Shedding Rite

Head to Nat’s room in The Crooked Moose. You’ll find Nat already inside, waiting for you. Speak with her.

She’ll tell you that Lou is actually a part of the Cult and, as part of her initiation, Lou has to convince Elena to join the cult. But since she failed, Lou is being punished by the Cult.

Pick up the Blueprints (Painkillers, Barrel Stack) from the table before you head out.

Exit The Crooked Moose and head east to the locked house with white drawings on the front door. It’s open now, and you can just walk in.

This is Maggie’s House. It’s split into two sections. There’s a container in the first section that requires a code to open.

The code for it is hidden in the notes about birds spread out around the room. Use the code (3569) to unlock the container and pick up Maggie’s Key.

Head to the second section of the room and use the key to unlock the trapdoor and head down.

This brings you straight to Lou. Go through her dialogue and she’ll tell you what the Cult is planning to do at the Shedding Rite. Elena will send her to Rutherford Ranch at the end of the conversation.

Loot the Blueprints (Grenade) table and head back up using the ladder.

Exit Maggie’s House to find Nat outside. She already took care of a cultist that Maggie sent after you. Go through her dialogue. A cutscene triggers once the dialogue ends.

Watch the cutscene play out as you witness the Shedding Rite.

The Giant Spider in the Forest (Broodmother Fight)

When the cutscene ends, you’ll find yourself back at Rutherford Ranch. Lou will speak with you.

Speak with Nat and Aunt Marilyn afterwards. Aunt Marilyn mentions a being in the forest who was supposed to heal her mother.

Exit the house when you’re ready. You’ll find a note from Adam on the porch mentioning a gate in the forest. You’ll also find the Department Outpost Key in your inventory.

Before you progress further, take some time to stock up on ammo and healing items. We strongly suggest bringing plenty of Flares and First Aid Kits. You’ll also want to bring at least one Electrical Grenade with you.

When you’re ready, head west from the Ranch and go across the bridge that leads to the Forest zone. Once you’re here, take a right and head upward, past the Spider Eggs.

Keep heading up till you spot a large gate on your left. You can unlock it with the Department Outpost Key.

As you take a few steps inside, the Broodmother, a giant spider, will attack you. But like all spider enemies in the game, it’s weak to the Flare Gun. Just two to three shots using your Flare Gun should take it down.

Take down the Broodmother and the Spiderlings that she hatches to attack you.

After defeating the Broodmother, head up, and you’ll spot a large metal gate. Head through the gate to enter the Project AEON: Tunnels.

Project AEON: Tunnels

From the entrance, keep walking forward till you spot a path on your right. This leads to a save point.

You’ll also spot a trapdoor nearby, but it’s locked for now. Save your progress, and backtrack to the turn.

Finding the Minecart Brake Lever

From here, head left, past the wooden beams.

Continue moving forward. Take down the Jumping Spider that ambushes you up ahead.

Past the Jumping Spider, there’s a fork. The left path leads to a locked gate. Ignore it and continue straight.

A bit further in, you’ll spot a group of Mutants to your north. Take them down. Continue along the left path, following the track.

There is some rubble that you’ll need to clear. Use your Mining Explosives or Molotovs.

You’ll reach another fork up ahead: left and down. Go down first through the wooden beams.

Clear the rubble on the other side and continue walking till you spot a door on your right.

Before heading through the door, head straight to reach a gate. This unlocks a path back to the entrance of the zone. Unlock the gate and return to the door. Make sure you pick up the Fuel from the container next to the door.

As you head through the door, a Mob will attack you. Take it down.

There are some more enemies in the left section of the room, but you don’t have to fight them.

Instead, head up and crouch under the wooden beams to get to the other side of the room.

Interact with the electrical panel to turn off the electrified puddle in the room.

Loot the broken mining cart for the Minecart Brake Lever.

Powering the locked security gate

After picking up the Minecart Brake Lever, return to the fork from earlier and go down the left path.

Keep moving forward and take down the Mob that’s guarding the path.

Just past it, you’ll spot a minecart on the track. Interact with the cart to install the Minecart Brake Lever.

Interact with the generator in the cargo behind the cart to power it. You’ll need one Fuel for it to work.

Interact with the gate on the left to open it and head inside.

Check the note on the ground and use the save point to save your progress. There’s also a Workbench here that you can use.

Return to the minecart and interact with it. It’ll take you to the area where you fought the first group of mutants. Since the generator in the cargo is powered, you can unlock the gate above you.

Head through the gate and continue forward till you reach another save point.

Finding the Crank

Keep moving forward along the corridor. There will be a couple of Jumping Spiders that you’ll need to take out as you progress.

There’s a locked door on your right. This is another shortcut that unlocks later on.

Keep moving forward, and you’ll eventually reach a fork. The left path leads to some ammo and crafting materials, but nothing important. So stick to the right path.

Another Mob will ambush you. Take it down.

Keep walking forward. You’ll reach a large metal door that’s locked for now. This is the main path, and we’ll need to find a way to unlock it.

Continue along the tunnel to encounter some more enemies.

There’s a ladder going up on your left where you fight a Jumping Spider. Remember this ladder, but don’t use it yet.

Continue along the tunnel. There’s another Jumping Spider that you’ll have to fight.

There’s an open trapdoor right past the enemy. Instead of going down, continue forward.

You’ll reach the other side of the gate you saw earlier. Unlock it to open the shortcut.

Return to the trapdoor and head down. Continue moving through the tunnel, crouching under the wooden beam up ahead.

There are some Jumping Spiders who have burrowed underground up ahead. Take them down as you progress.

You’ll eventually reach a fork. The left path opens a shortcut back to the first save point of Project AEON: Tunnels.

Keep going right to spot a save point. The Crank that we need is on the machine up ahead. Pick it up.

Opening the Large Metal Door

After collecting the Crank, exit through the Hatch and return to the ladder that you saw earlier near a Jumping Spider. Use it to head up.

Take out the enemy on the right and continue along the path.

You’ll reach a wooden bridge. There’s a Mob on the other side of the bridge. Take it down.

Go across the bridge and interact with the machine on the other side. Hold down the prompted button. This opens the large metal door on the lower level.

Return to the ladder, go back to the lower level, and make your way to the door. Head through it and continue walking till you spot a ladder. This takes you outside.

The Druid’s Hut

After exiting the tunnels, continue moving forward.

You’ll spot the Druid’s Hut after a while. Head through the door.

Read the note on the table up ahead. Then go into the room on the right.

You’ll find a save point here. The trapdoor is locked for now.

Opening The Trapdoor

Exit the Druid’s Hut and go north. You’ll spot a red wire on the ground.

Follow the wire, and you’ll reach the door to a bunker. Head inside.

Keep walking forward to find a save point. For the next part, we’re going to need an Electric Grenade. Luckily, we’ve brought one with us.

Go into the next room, and aim an Electric Grenade at the ground near the vent. It will electrify the panel and open the door for you.

Head into the room and activate the generator.

If you don’t have an Electric Grenade, you’ll have to go into the northern room through the door. Clear the room of the two patrolling Mobs.

Enter the air vent and make your way to the locker. You should find it in a container here.

We’re done with the area for now. So exit the bunker and make your way back to the Druid’s Hut.

However, the forest will have changed, and there will be Mutated Deers roaming the zone.

Head through the opening past the cultist and follow the tunnel to reach an air vent.

  • Kill The Doctor
  • Surrender

Regardless of what you choose, Father Matthew will shoot Eric Vermer. He’ll then tell you that the code to the door is on his Dog Tag.

You can do it yourself or have Father Matthew do it. Regardless of your choice, the game will end, and you’ll unlock the Goodbye achievement. This is the true ending of the game.

After Father Matthew shoots the doctor, if you leave through the door you came from, you’ll get the bad ending of the game and unlock the Forever achievement.
