MIO: Memories in Orbit Walkthrough Part 9 – Rescuing Mel & Exploring The Vaults

Welcome to the ninth part of our walkthrough for MIO: Memories in Orbit.

Our first meeting with Dr. Halyn didn’t go too well. On top of that, Mel has been kidnapped, and it’s up to us to find her and bring her back.

Returning to the Vaults

Fast travel back to the Promenade Entrance Attuner and use the shuttle in this area to head down to make your way back to the Vaults Attuner.

Rad will already be waiting for you in front of the door that was locked earlier on the left. She will open the door for you once you talk to her. We can now continue exploring the zone.

Head through the door. Before you head further in, go inside the pipe under the grate.

This takes you to a new location called Soothing Refuge. There’s a giant robot sitting on the left. This is Goliath, an NPC that’ll tell you stories as you keep returning to this place from different locations.

Take some time checking out the zone. There’s a door on the left that’s locked from the other side.

Open the door on the right side of the room. Note the pipe above you.

The pipe leads to a dead end for now. You can spot a pump above the pipe as you head through it.

Passing through the door, you’ll spot a pipe that you can enter. But first, continue heading forward through the pipe that’s heading downwards.

This will lead you to an Old Core.

Go back out of the pipe and enter the second pipe. This takes you to a room where you’ll find a Candle. Pick it up and return to the Soothing Refuge. Use the pipe on the right side of the room to exit the area and return to the main path.

This time, start heading left across the room. There are a few proximity bombs here that you’ll need to watch out for.

The main path continues along the top-left, but there’s a Crystallised Nacre on the floor below the grate that you can pick up.

You’ll have to cross a lake filled with flying enemies and proximity bombs up ahead. Use Glide, Hairpin, and Harvester to make your way across the lake.

Go through the pipe on the left.

This will drop you to a large empty room.

Activating the Pump System

Before we progress further through the zone, we’ll be rescuing Mel. The first step is to activate four pumps.

NOTE: This next section can be tricky. If you’re having trouble, consider turning on the Pacifist mode from the Assists Menu.

Activating the First Pump

From the large room, head right and jump into the bottom drawer. There’s a hidden path through the drawer that takes you to a separate section.

Open the door on the right and head through.

Take down the flying enemy. Then use the wall to scurry over to the other side and jump to the platform on the right. There’s another flying enemy here.

Open the door on the right and continue forward. Use the disappearing platform to head down. Be careful of the two enemies in this room.

You’ll see the first pump below you, above a pipe. Activate it. Then scale the wall on your right.

Loot the Mechanical Remains for an Old Core.

Activating the Second Pump

Return to the pump and go up the reservoir on the left. Now that the pump is activated, the water level in the reservoir will continue to rise and fall. When the water level goes down, you’ll see two pipes that you can enter.

The pipe on the right loops back to Soothing Refuge. Go through the left pipe.

Jump across to the left platform and go through the door.

Take down the enemy and continue moving forward.

There will be another flying enemy up ahead. In this area, the water level will continue to rise and fall. When the water level falls, you have to scale under the wall to the next section.

In the second section, you’ll have to remain airborne when the water level rises. Use the grapple point and pogo on the enemies to avoid falling into the water below.

Take down the enemy once you get past this point. Keep moving left afterward.

You’ll enter a pipe that will lead you to a large chamber. Before dropping down, scale across the ceiling and enter the pipe on the right.

Move forward to find a Nacre Basin. The door on the right leads back to Soothing Refuge. Open the door and talk to Goliath for some dialogue.

Backtrack to the large chamber and drop down below. Loot the Mechanical Remains for an Old Core.

Keep going left through the door. You’ll be able to talk to an NPC on a floating rock.

Head left till you reach a large reservoir filled with water. Use the ceiling to get across.

Drop down from the other side and head right to reach another lake. Use the bomb to refill your energy and glide to the other side.

Take down the flying enemy here and go into the pipe above you. You can scale the wall on the right to reach it.

The second pump is just above you. Activate it.

Activating the Third Pump

After activating the second pump, drop into the pipe below and head right.

Wait for the water level to go down, then jump to the floating platform with the NPC on it. Quickly go into the pipe on the right.

Jump to the platform on the right and open the door past the enemy. Head through the door.

Keep moving right. There are two more enemies up ahead. The third pump is just past the enemies.

Activate the pump and head through the door on the right.

Activating the Fourth Pump

Continue through the door. You’ll spot a Crystalliser on the other side across the gap. For now, we’ll be heading down.

You’ll drop down to a platform in an area filled with webs. There’s an elite enemy on your right. You don’t have to fight it if you don’t want to.

Jump to the grate below on the left.

Go left to find some Crystallized Nacre on a platform.

Return to the grate and head right. Crawl under the floor and proceed to the right.

You’ll land on a small platform in front of a door. The door is locked from the other side.

Climb the grates in the background to find the fourth and final pump. Activate it.

Finding the Vaults’ Torn Overseer

After activating the fourth pump, make your way back to the Crystalliser you saw earlier.

Keep progressing right, along the path. You’ll reach an area with fluctuating water levels. Wait for the water level to go down and jump across the pipes.

Keep progressing to the right when the water level goes down to reach an NPC on a platform.

Enter through the doorway. You’ll find some Crystallised Nacre on the right.

Use the hanging pile of junk above you to go up.

From here, jump to the left, glide, and then quickly grab another hanging junk. You should have enough energy left to climb to the top.

Scurry along the ceiling past the first set of spinning spikes and then drop down. Glide the rest of the way to reach the platform on the left.

Go left and climb up the grate to reach the upper level. You’ll find the Torn Overseer for Vault here. Interact with it to send it back.

Open the door on the right and head inside. The NPC will jump down.

A cutscene will trigger, and your HP will go down by 1 permanently.

After the cutscene, go right and jump to the other side of the pipe heading down. Interact with the door.

This loops back to the robot manufacturing station from earlier. The Attuner is above you. Use it to rest.

After resting, drop down and return to the tunnel heading down. You’ll find Rad peeking down the pipe. She’ll tell you that Mel is just below you.

Drop down through the pipe and continue moving forward to find Mel hanging upside down. Interact with her. This will lead directly into a boss fight.

How to Beat Debby, Dr. Halyn’s Collector

Debby, Dr. Halyn’s Collector, is a tank and will soak up a lot of hits before you can beat her. But thankfully, her moveset is relatively straightforward, and once you learn her attacks, you should be able to dodge through most of them.

The boss constantly jumps around the arena or dives into the gloomwater below. She leaves behind a proximity bomb when she does so. When the bomb explodes, the grate under the bomb disappears for a few seconds. It also launches some gloomwater blobs that can damage you.

Other than that, the boss also fires some gloomwater projectiles toward you from time to time. You can dodge through them or move out of the way.

Debby has only one melee attack, where she swipes her cannon across her body. This can be dodged easily.

She also has an attack where she launches three gloomwater blobs up in the air. You can dodge through them as they come down.

Her most dangerous attack is when she fires a barrage of gloomwater projectiles horizontally across the arena. However, if you can close the distance, you can dish out up to six consecutive jumping attack combos on her, taking a huge chunk of her health.

Stick close to the boss, dodge her attacks, and keep striking her to take down the boss. Once the boss is down, talk to Mel to free her. She’ll make her way back to the workshop on her own.

Returning to the Vaults Attuner

Head through the pipe on the right side of the arena after rescuing Mel. This will lead you to the start of a tricky parkour section. Take down the flying enemy near the rotating spikes.

Jump to the right when the middle spike moves away and float to the platform below you to the right.

Scale up the wall on the right, hit the bomb and then continue scaling up some more to reach another platform above. You’ll find some Crystallized Nacre here.

Drop down to the platform below you to the left and run past the enemies to find a Nacre Basin.

The next section is quite tricky. First jump up to the rock platform and stand close to the red grass.

The spike can’t hit you here.


When the spike goes up, scurry along the left side wall and then let go so that you fall on the empty space to the right.

As the spike moves past you, quickly grab the left side wall and continue scaling up to the platform above you.

From here, you’ll have to move past another moving spike and go up. Jump across the red grass to the rocky platforms on the other side.

Go all the way down and head in through the doorway at the bottom.

Head to the right side of the room and climb up to the rock platform.

From here, you need to jump left and grapple to the grappling point.

Then hit the grapple point and glide to the platform on the left. Make sure you don’t get hit by the moving spikes.

The platforms will fall if you stand on them for too long. So go to the left and climb up the wall to reach the platform above you.

Then quickly climb across the ceiling to the right to get to safety.

There’s one more parkour segment up ahead, but this one is easy. Stand on the platform and once it drops, carefully make your way down. Use your glide to break your fall and adjust your positioning to avoid the spikes.

Interact with the switch to call the elevator and use it to go to L1: Vaults Entrance.

Go left and open the door.

Continue down the long corridor to loop back to the shuttle that you took from Promenade to reach the Vaults.

Use the shuttle to go up and use the Promenade Entrance Attuner to head back to The Severed Spine and go talk to Mel. As a reward for rescuing her, she will sell you the Gratitude Modifier for only 1 Nacre.
