Welcome to the Into Indie Games walkthrough covering Part 1 of Moss: The Forgotten Relic Book 1.
The First Book marks the beginning of Quill’s journey in Moss: The Forgotten Relic, bringing the events of Moss to a new audience outside of its original VR release. If you had the opportunity to experience Quill’s adventure in virtual reality back in the day, you’ll get to see the same beloved story from a different perspective here.
You take on the role of the Reader, helping Quill overcome puzzles, enemies, and obstacles as she sets out on her adventure.

The Beginning

Starting with the First Book, the scene starts with you looking at a page and the narrator telling the story of how all things began. You will be able to turn the book’s pages with the prompt given to you.

The story begins with a mysterious group of rebels who killed the king in his bedchamber, and the castle pulsed with the Arcane’s evil. This caused the town’s survivors to move to an abandoned temple far away from the enemy.
Meet Quill

The next scene showcases our protagonist, Quill, who is wandering beyond the edge of the clearing, but it was about time to go back home.

Just as she fixed her backpack, she noticed a strange glowing glass and picked it up. As soon as Quill picked up the glass, a strange being was summoned and looked down at her.
Surprisingly, this did not scare Quill. She decided to take the glass with her and ask about it.
Learning The Glass Powers

Here is where you start to control our character. Walk to the right and then climb up the rocks to reach the next section. Here, climb up and you will notice a mysterious blue box.

With the power of the glass, Quill has the ability to control certain items in the world. Interact with the box and pull it out so you can use it to cross to the other side.

Keep progressing forward to the next section. Here, jump to the other side and climb up the rocks ahead. Once again, move the box toward you so you can drop down onto it.

After you drop down, climb up to the other side and move the box toward you again so you can use it as a platform to reach the upper floor, then go through the branch. You will spot a Scroll Collectible that you can pick up.
Return To The Village

Just as Quill is about to reach the village gate, you will notice that she is already late and they have closed it, but that will not stop our champion.
Climb down and make your way to the gate. With your new powers, you can actually open the gate by pulling it toward you. Before you go in, climb up the rock ahead to reach another Scroll Collectible.

Go through the gate and walk through the village. Eventually, the path will stop because the bridge is not lowered, and you need to use the water wheel to your advantage to reach the lever that activates it.

You will be able to interact with the water wheel to slow down its movement. Wait for the section that has flooring and walk inside. As the water wheel turns, drop down to the left side and climb up to reach the upper section.

Now what you need to do is wait for the wooden planks on the water wheel so you can cross and reach the lever. Interact with it and the bridge will lower. Use it to cross and reach Quill’s House.
Meet Argus

Go inside the house and you will return to looking through the book’s pages. Quill shows the glass to her uncle, Argus, but he has a look of panic on his face.
Argus seems to recognize the glass, packs his things, and sets off into the unknown without telling Quill where he is going. He commands her to stay at the house until he returns.

It is now nighttime, and Quill has fallen asleep at the dining table. A glowing Wisp comes inside the house trying to wake her up.
This Wisp claims to know Argus’s whereabouts, and poor Quill decides to follow it without a second thought.

Before you leave the house, go to the upper floor. Next to the bed, you will find another Scroll Collectible. Pick it up and then leave the house.
Follow The Wisp

Progress to the right and follow the Wisp. You will reach a closed door, and you can use the glass power to open it. Before you go through, keep going to the left and you will find another Scroll Collectible.

In the next section, the path will be blocked by branches. Use your sword to destroy them.
Now there are two boxes that you can move. Start by pulling the first one so you can go through the passage. For the second one, pull it to the right so you can continue on your way.

Climb up and now pull both boxes outward so you can create a passage and reach the Pink Portal ahead. This portal seems to take Quill to a different part of the forest.

Continue following the Wisp until you reach the lake. As you approach it, it seems there is no way across, but several platforms will be available for you to pull up and use to jump across.

As soon as you reach the start of the broken bridge, destroy the branch and go through the secret entrance to reach the visible Scroll Collectible.

Keep progressing to the right and complete the platforming section. There are no puzzles here, and you will eventually reach what looks like the docks.

A wooden plank will be waiting for you so that you can use it to reach the Mire. The Wisp claims that your uncle is there, and because Quill is worried, she decides to take the chance and continue forward.
Enter The Mire

After you reach your destination, progress to the right and cross the metal sword. Since it is rusted, it will break and you will fall. This will hurt Quill, but the Reader is with her.
Use the glass to heal your injuries by holding the prompt. Now that you are back in shape, keep moving forward.

You will reach a closed gate, but above it you will be able to move a statue. Move it to the right and this will magically open the gate.

Go through and attack the pink thornwood blocking the way so you can clear the passage. Make it to the upper floor and then cross the bridge.

After crossing, drop down into what looks like an arena. Enemies will spawn here, and you need to defeat them.

First, make sure you cut all of the surrounding Thornwood, as this will grant you additional damage. Quill can survive three attacks before dying, and you also have the ability to dodge.
After defeating all the enemies, the gate will open and you will be able to continue upward.
Meet The Sprites

You will reach what appears to be an altar, and then you will return to the book to turn the pages as the story continues. The book essentially serves as the game’s cutscene system, which is quite unique.
It reveals that a small band of Sprites has arrived. Vada, their leader, seems to sense the presence of the Reader. However, one of the guards demands that Quill hand over the glass.

Quill believes these are the people who hurt her uncle, so she confronts them. Vada clears up the misunderstanding and explains that Argus, Quill’s uncle, is actually the one who summoned the Sprites to help with this matter.
Vada then tells Quill that Argus was attacked and taken to the Castle. If Quill dares to cross the Mire while carrying the glass, Sarffog, a mysterious and powerful enemy, will be her greatest challenge.

Before leaving, Vada offers Quill special weapons crafted by the Sprites. These weapons should allow her to hold her ground, as the road ahead will be dangerous and filled with challenges.
