Beginning The Documentation

As soon as you hit the start button, you will find a moth sitting on a lamp. Click it to open an interaction circle, then click it again. Wait for the circle to enter the green area, and then click to inspect your first moth.
When you try to write about it, the teacup spills. Press the arrow button to your right, and the protagonist will tell us how this book is a heirloom from their great-aunt Galina, but with tea all over it, it’s ruined. Instead of making it complicated, our protagonist decides to update their moth list.

Click on the book icon on the bottom left to bring out the journal to learn about all types of moths; you will have to capture them all. There are a total of 23 moths across seven areas that you have to capture four times, and their locations are in the journal.
Once you’ve looked at all the names, close the journal, and the protagonist will tell you further about their interest and how they want to catch all the moths to honor their great-aunt.
Now, we head out to the first area to find our moths.
Path

Path, as the name suggests, is a small area covered in trees and tall grass, which is a perfect place for the moths. Here, you have to find two moths, two pupae, two larvae, and two eggs.
The two moths that you will find at the Path are the Green Forester and Blood-Vein. To complete their documentation, interact with the eggs and pupae. Also, don’t forget to pick up Aunt Gelina’s notes on the ground to learn how to approach the moths.

After documenting their eggs, larvae, and pupae, the Path area will be completed.
Tip: If you struggle with finding the eggs and larvae, then sleep on the path. Everything depends on RNG.
Shop

Return to the map to find two new areas unlocked: Shop and Mixed Forest. We’ll go to the shop first. While it isn’t a place to find moths, you can buy new items to attract rare types of moths.
Since we’re heading for the Mixed Forest, buy Isa’s Lamp. Check the map, and select Mixed Forest.
Mixed Forest

The Mixed Forest has three moths for you to discover:
- Tau Emperor
- Garden Tiger Moth
- Four-dotted Footman

Here, the larvae are usually on the tree or on the ground. It’s easy to find the Four-dotted Footman and Garden Tiger Moth, but the Tau Emperor loves to live up to its name.
Place Isa’s Lamp on the ground and sleep for the day. Repeat the process until you find all of the larvae, eggs, moths, and their cocoons, and leave the Mixed Forest.
Forest Path

The next area is the Forest Path, where you have to document the following moths’ life cycle:
- Speckled Yellow
- Emerald Owl
- Clouded Buff
- Jersey Tiger
Before going to the Forest Path, buy the Bird Vetch, Vettle, and Great Plantain to attract all four moths of this area. Unlike the Mixed Forest, you will normally find larvae and pupae on the purple flowers and tall grass all over the place.

All moths here are rare. Use the items you have bought from the Shop to attract them and then document their life cycle. Speckled Yellow’s eggs are green and very small, so keep an eye out for three small eggs on the flowers.
Note: If you're struggling with Emerald Owl, return to the shop and buy Male Fern.
With all these items, sleep and continue documenting the life cycles to end Forest Path.
Garden

The Garden is a special area in Mothkeep where you don’t have to find any moths. However, you can buy and place plants of your liking to attract them instead. You can learn about the moths they can attract from the item descriptions in the shop.
Apartment

From the Garden, we head towards the Apartment. Unfortunately, there isn’t as much greenery as in other areas, but placing different items will help to gather more moths. Here, you can find the following species:
- Clothing Moth
- Case-Bearing Clothes Moth
- Mill Moth
- Indianmeal Moth
First, go to the items section and sell everything you have, then go to the shop and buy Wool, Tea Leaves, and Lava Lamp. All of these items can attract apartment moths; and the lava lamp works for all four.

Return to the Apartment and, before placing the newly bought items, interact with the available moths and larvae. Once done, use the items, then sleep, and wait for the insects to arrive.
Document their lifecycle, and if you’re struggling with the Mill Moth, buy Flour from the shop. With this, the Apartment level comes to an end.
Cliff

After documenting the Apartment area, we can now move towards the Cliff. Below is a list of the moths that you can find here:
- Black-Veined Moth
- Chimney Sweeper
- Silver Y
You can find the insects in the tall grass and dandelions. To boost your documentation, go to the shop, sell all the items, and buy Snakeroot and Dandelion.

Place them on the cliff, and wait for the moths to arrive. Chimney Sweeper is the only species that tested my patience, so sleep and wait for it to arrive.
After a few moments, you will learn about their life cycle, and this area will conclude.
Picnic Area

The Picnic Area is also a place full of greenery, and here, you will find the following moths:
- Blue Underwing
- French Red Underwing
- Red Underwing
Trees are the only thing that attracts the moths here. So, to attract them faster, head to the shop and buy Aspen, Apple, and Sugar Bait. Don’t forget to sell the previous items to get extra coins.
Return to the Picnic Area and place the items on the ground. Sleep, and then the magic will happen. All three of the moths are attracted to all the items you have purchased, making it easier to document them.

The Red and French Red Underwing moths look identical, so make sure to interact with every moth in the Picnic Area to complete it. Once that’s done, pick up all the items, and now we head towards the final area of the game.
Field

The Field is the final area of Mothkeep, which is full of purple flowers. And here, you will find these moth species:
- Yellow Shell
- Six-Spot Burnet
- Latticed Heath
- Purple Tiger
All the moths here are extremely shy, and it may take a while to find them first. To fasten the process, go to the shop, sell the previous items, and then buy Alfalfa, Bird’s-Foot Trefoil, and Marsh Thistle.

Place the newly purchased flowers on the ground, and sleep to pass the time. Collect the documents, and with that, all locations will be completed, and the game ends with a thank-you letter from the developer.
