Hello. Welcome to Into Indie Games’ guide to Character Customization in Octopath Traveler 0. We will cover all the options presented to you at the beginning of the game to set up your character for the journey ahead. This is the first time the series has let your create your own protagonist and there are a fair few options to go through. So let’s get into it.
Table of contents
Appearance
Physique
Simple options here, you can either pick a Male or Female character. You can rotate the character as well. We are going with a Male protagonist for this playthrough.

Face/Eye Color
The next option is the Face and Eye color. For this you can select two kinds of eyes. An elongated eye shape or a beady eye shape. At the bottom you can find color options. We went with the beady eyes and purple irises.

Hairstyle/Hair Color
The next option is 8 different hairstlyes and 8 color options for your protagonist. We went with the second option and lamented the fact there isn’t a color option for platinum blonde.

Skin Tone
Up next is skin tone. You can go lighter or darker with the skin tone. We went with the 5th option to create a more olive skinned hero.

Motions
The next option is animation. This is a pretty unique setting – wherein you can select the sprite animation of your character. Type 1 seems to be a more thoughtful kind of stance, Type 2 a more stylish/flair inducing set of animations and Type 3 seems like a somber set of motions. We went with Type 1.

Voice
For this option, we went with Type 3. Pick whatever you want your hero to sound like.

Finally, confirm settings.
Background
Learned Skill
The next set of options sees you set up an innate skill for your hero. These options basically boil down to a fighter, healer, or debuffer class.
Twin Shot Mastery
This option allows you to hit an enemy 2 times and the damage is based on your weapon damage and other buffs that would be active at the time. There is a neat lore related backstory as well, where your father was the watch captain and he taught you how to fight.

Healing Prayer Mastery
This option allows you to heal one Ally and restore their mana by 10%. Simple healing spell. The backstory here is that your mom was a cleric who taught you how to heal.

Weaken Foundation Mastery
This options allows you to debuff enemies by lowering their Physical Attack and Physical Defence for 2 turns. Here the backstory is that the local carpenter trained you.

We went with a Fighter build.
Favorite Dish
Up next, you can pick your favourite dish that gives you different buffs for 15 turns. All of them increase your Max HP and Max SP by 10% but the secondary effects change.

| Dish 1 | Physical Attack +5% |
| Dish 2 | Physical Defence +5% |
| Dish 3 | Crit +5% |
| Dish 4 | Accuracy +5% |
| Dish 5 | Speed +5% |
| Dish 6 | Elemental Defense +5% |
| Dish 7 | Elemental Attack +5% |
| Dish 8 | Evasion +5% |
Once you pick a dish you can name it. We picked Dish 1 and named it Dish.

Belongings
You can now pick three belongings to bring on your journey. There are 8 options.
Promise Charm
This bracelet – a gift from your childhood friend Stia gives your 10% Elemental Attack.

Fighter’s Wristband
This wristband given to you by Senior Watchman Phenn gives you 10% Physical Attack and gets your fired up.

Sacred Charm Flame
This Talisman gifted to you by Deacon Laurana gives you a defense buff to the tune of 10% increase to Physical Defence and Elemental Defence.

Crested Key
This is a key you picked up in the town square as a child and apparently a certain warrior is looking for it. Seems like a quest or storyline is attached to it.

Letter Fragment
You received this from a mysterious….kitten when you were young. Similar to the Crested Key seems like a quest item.

Ratatouille
So this dish, once consumed, gives you +20% to Elemental Defense, +15% to Physical Defense and +15% to Fire/Ice/Lightning/Wind Resistances.

Nourishing Nut (M)
The M suggests there is an L sized version of this in the game – which will give you a bigger increase. Regardless these nuts greatly increase your Maximum HP.

Embershroom Bed
This bed of mushrooms was given to you by a traveler long ago. You can harvest this to get mushrooms later.

We went with the Letter Fragment, Crested Key and Nourishing Nut.

Finally enter your name to end Character Creation.
