The Cabin

Our duo survives the Shade’s attack on the railway tracks and heads into a train tunnel; Eugene wakes up after they enter it. Ren, on his back, remembers how the glowing butterfly altered her body to look like Eugene’s daughter, if she had a chance to grow up.

Take a picture of anything that catches your interest, but set the camera shutter speed to 3S. After exiting the tunnel and seeing grandpa’s cabin, Ren asks Eugene to drop her off, then runs towards it. However, Eugene wonders about the cabin’s existence in this world.
Get to the cabin and talk to Ren, who still can’t remember whether this is her home. Eugene adds that he has visited this place before, but she doesn’t understand him. The main entrance of the cabin is locked, so turn around from its right side to find a back door.

He takes a deep breath, and then he enters the cabin to find it deserted with things all over the place. Observe everything inside to gain seeds. Not only are there remnants of his grandpa, but you will also stumble upon the statues that his father crafted.
When you’re done exploring, unlock the main door from inside and talk to Ren. However, her eyes turn shallow, which also happened during the Shade’s attack in the forest. Since Eugene couldn’t find the Seer inside, go to the cabin’s back side and ascend the path next to it.

“Check with Ren and head up together.”
Before Eugene can reach the top, thick fog will begin to settle. Turn around and return to Ren, but she still acts emotionless and asks him to watch the TV in the cabin. Go inside, and interact with it.

“Sit down and watch the broken TV for a bit.”
A trip to an 11-year-old Eugene memory begins. As his grandpa’s eyesight got worse, he increasingly became more extreme regarding finding the Seer and finding his “family” on the summit. Young Eugene tries his best to calm him down, but nothing can divert his grandpa’s mind.
After Eugene wakes up from the distant memory, Ren brainwashes him; he becomes emotionless like her. He loses his mind and finds himself in a cabin covered with multiple pictures. Before things get worse, it’s time to exit this psychological trap.

The camera is out of film, so if you try to take a picture, it will fail. Put it down, and turn around to find the darkroom. Walk towards it and interact with a picture of the ox on the table. This triggers a distant memory of a 14-year-old Eugene talking with his father, who recently lost his job. His father tells him to find a job that “pays,” and hands him the grandpa’s camera.
Back in the room with pictures, turn around and look to your right to find a picture on the floor of the red light room. Ren speaks in his head that these are the memories he wants to run away from. Now, pick up the unicorn’s picture to trigger a distant memory where a drunk Eugene finds out that Irene has left him.

When it ends, return to the main hall and interact with the bear’s picture on the table; he’s eventually forgetting himself in all this mess as Ren tells him to stop looking at these memories. A distant memory of Eugene, now 32 years old, reveals how his story about the mountain, while the Foundation tried to tear it down, received criticism and led to the arrest of Roy, his boss.
Again, in the room, follow the red light and find the cafe group picture under a door. This triggers another memory after Roy’s arrest, where Vince and Eugene get into a heated argument after their company, Viewpoint, shuts down.

Eugene, confronting his regrets, falls on his knees, and Ren, who’s transformed into a red spirit, comforts him. She tells him that he’s a part of the Dusk Mountain now, and everything’s going to be okay. However, when the perspective shifts, he remains persistent in leaving this place.
The door before you is locked. Turn around to find numerous red spirits lingering in the room. While Ren tries to suppress Eugene’s mind with hopelessness and asks him to stay here forever, go through the front door; it will loop the cabin. Another door to your right will open, which leads to the darkroom.

Enter it and interact with the Photo Enlarger at the room’s end. To make it work, you will need a film roll. Exit the room, and turn right to find the deer staring at you through the window; talk to it to get a film roll.
Return to the Photo Enlarger and interact with it to receive Undeveloped Photographs A and B; they will reveal Eugene’s true self. Now, turn around and take them to the developing liquid. There’s a specific order to develop a photo:
- Develop
- Stop
- Fix
- Rinse

Photograph A is a blurry image taken in Heavy Fog, which shows little Eugene following his grandpa. When you try to develop the second photograph, Ren’s red spirit will try to push Eugene away, but it’s too late as the Shade appears from the photo and attacks him. Photograph B shows the grownup Eugene carrying Ren.
As he falls into the Shade’s lake, the fish spirit from the valley arrives and saves him in the nick of time. After you’re safe from the Shade, talk to her.

“I’ll try my best…”
The Nightwaters

Don’t walk into the fog. Instead, turn around and move right to find a destroyed house; follow the embershine petals. This will lead you to a picture of the fish. And this initiates a distant memory of a six-year-old Eugene, listening to his mother’s conversation. She talks about leaving the house since it makes her feel “caged.”
Turn right again in the Nightwaters, and interact with the second picture on a bench. And in this distant memory, his mom bids farewell and tells him to stay strong no matter what happens.

Exit the house, and move forward to find a bed with a blurry picture of Eugene and Ren. It reminds him of the time when he was 10 years old, battling a critical fever. To help him, his grandpa uses the Embershine petals to call on the God beyond the Golden Horizon and asks Eugene to look for animals; they will be his eyes to move through the fog.
Follow the Embershine petals in the Nightwaters, and you will find the blurry picture of Eugene and his grandpa. In this distant memory, Eugene and his father try to find Grandpa in the cabin during the Foundation’s bombing, but he is nowhere to be found. He suggests that Grandpa might be at the mountain’s peak to talk to God, but his father blames everything on little Eugene.

After returning to the Nightwaters, the petals will lead you into the fog. Wait until the fog clears, then pick up the camera before you. Now, ask the fireplace how to find Ren, then show it the blurry picture of Eugene carrying her on his back and the other picture, “Face in the Frame.”

Doing this will bring up a silhouette, which then catches fire and gives you Ashen Shadow. Take a step back and use the camera; don’t forget to set the camera’s shutter speed to 30S. Wait for it to light up, and then take its picture. Do this again with shutter speed set to 1000S when the silhouette fully turns golden as you focus on it.
Instead of the silhouette, the camera prints a photo of someone with a shadowy face. Suddenly, a disintegration between the silhouette and Eugene happens, which ultimately reveals that Ren is actually the younger self of Eugene.

With this revelation, a distant memory begins where a devastating typhoon destroys the entire mountain, and Eugene just can’t forget about his grandpa. However, his dad reveals that he’s been missing for over a year, and in life, unexpected, unfortunate things happen.
Eugene wakes up after this distressing dream and immediately pulls Ren out of the silhouette, saving her from the Shade. Without her, he is nothing. They get back up and now walk towards the summit while having a conversation about Eugene’s future; he wonders how Ren is a girl despite her being his younger self.

“Let her sleep. Maybe she’ll remember something.”

She’ll thank Eugene for the journey to the summit, and then fall into a dream of her past in a cosmic section. Here, you take control of Ren. Follow the purple light, who reveal that this cosmic area is the Great Flow, where souls forget everything before starting over.

The light tells you to follow the light, and as you move forward, Ren will begin to forget everything about herself. After reaching the light, she jumps into the water. This whole section shows the moments before Eugene met Ren in this world. A few minutes later, Ren wakes up on Eugene’s back, and they can finally see the summit.
The Summit

From here, take the downhill path to your left and meet with the bear. Eugene remembers that he’s Roy, and when he asks the bear about it, he doesn’t remember his past name. Before departing, he gives Eugene a bike, as he promised during his arrest.
The Shade will suddenly approach from behind, and when it eats you, select the bike and escape. All the spirits will arrive and guide you to the correct path; wait for them to point it out. Keep moving forward, and as Eugene falls from the mountain, the boar (phil) will catch him, and the unicorn will save Ren.

Avoid the Shade and rocks on the road. When it completely blocks the path, the remaining spirits will arrive and throw Eugene’s camera at him. Open it immediately and take a picture of the Shade’s mouth when it opens; it will happen multiple times.
This section will end at the Abandoned Factory, and you will finally enter the dream world with Ren. Now, pick up Ren from the ground and then talk with the deer ahead. He tells you to wait for the fog to settle in, and then follow the Embershine petals to reach the forgotten peak. Before the final stretch to the summit begins, the deer gives Eugene the protective charm with his, Grandpa’s, prayers.

Again, the Shade will arrive, but the ox arrives in the nick of time to save Eugene, the deer, and Ren. Move on the ox’s body and avoid all the landslides to reach the tunnel. After making a successful jump, Eugene will turn around to see the spirits.
“One last shot of everyone.”

With the picture, all of them fade away, and Eugene enters the tunnel with Ren. Walk through the tunnel and use the Field Notes to fill the incomplete sentences; remember the conversations you had with the spirits. At the end, interact with the sign on the ground.
“Head into the darkness.”

The fog will clear, and the red lake awaits you. Use the protective charm, and now you will be able to walk on the lake as Eugene and Ren talk about their past. He finally understands that Ren’s body belongs to her daughter, and although she passed away so early, she still knows everything about her dad.

When you reach the lake’s end, a flooded mountain will form. Thanks to the protective charm, you will be able to move through it effortlessly. Avoid all the obstacles in your way, and keep running towards the summit. The fog will immediately get worse, so to find the right path, follow the Embershine petals, and Eugene will eventually jump towards the summit.

He becomes unconscious, and Ren wakes him up. The summit is in sight, but Ren is now extremely weak. Pick her up first, then take her to the summit. There, the Golden Horizon will finally reveal itself. Unfortunately, there is no existence of the Seer near it. For the final moment before Eugene finally leaves this world, he manages to take Ren’s picture and keeps it to himself to always remember her.

Eugene wakes up as the paramedics carry him to the ambulance, and cries when he tries to tell them their name.
