Welcome to the Into Indie Games walkthrough for Riven (2024).

Survey Island
- From the platform you’re on, go up the stairs and follow the winding walkway to an elevator.
- Use the elevator to go up and then step out onto the surveying platform.
- Press the button on top of the device ahead to open the device’s inner workings.
- Now our goal is to arrange the blocks on the board so that they cover the middle section of the board (i.e. leaving the outer edge empty).
- However, you must do this in the same configuration as the blocks below the surveying platform.
- This means the big square will be in the top-left, the small-square in the top-right, the L-shape in the bottom-left, and so on.
- Once you get it right, five spheres will pop on the board.
- Press each of these spheres and take a screenshot to your notebook for reference. You might notice that each of the shapes is in fact, representative of an island in Riven.
- You can even look into the distance to see that the locations of the real-life islands correspond to the ‘maps’ you see below.
- Armed with this map, you can now access Gehn’s Spy Room.
- Return to the elevator, where you’ll find a familiar board. Simply press the buttons where the spheres were, and you’ll be taken to the spy room.
- In the Spy Room, go up to the pedestal ahead, where you can use the left lever to spy through various cameras using the hexagonal buttons.
- The right lever is more interesting to us, however. Use it to see six buttons and handles to turn the wheel.
- Each of the symbols represents an island, and you might already recognize the symbols for Boiler Island and Prison Island.
- Pressing the buttons turns on a light of a particular color, unique to the island. These colors will be relevant later.
- You can take screenshots for each button, but these colors are not randomized, so you can continue regardless.
- Return to the elevator and go up all the way to the surveying platform. However this time, go the other way to find a lake. There’s also a spinning dome to the left, which we’ll enter now so as to align the station and also send a canister.
- Take a right and go all the way around the lake to reach the stroboscope, which has been knocked to the side a bit.
- On the bright side, we can already see what the symbol for this island is – a horizontal line. Interact with the stroboscope twice, so that you’re looking just over the stroboscope, at the spinning dome.
- Give it your best shot and press the button when the horizontal line symbol is aligned with where the stroboscope should have been. This might take some tries.
- Once the spinning dome stops, enter the Starry Expanse through it.
- As before, extend the walkway, align the central station, and go up the stairs to shoot off a canister.
- Now rather than going anywhere else, we’ll return to Survey Island, where we have unfinished business.
- Return to the elevator and from there, return to the Maglev station.
- You’ll find a door on the opposite platform. To get to it, first step into the Maglev, turn it around, and then exit the Maglev without pushing the ‘forward’ lever.
- Go through the door now and proceed to a dead end. Look to the left of the walkway to find a long lever and pull it.
- Wait for the elevator and step in. Then, press the small button to the left of the door to close it and be on your way.
- Proceed all the way forward now to another Maglev station. Gehn’s scribe will be busy using it to get away, so wait for his journey to complete, and then summon it for yourself using the blue button.
- Once the Maglev is back, get on and make your way back to Jungle Island, where we’ll finally solve the mysteries of the totems and learn two numeral systems.
