Welcome to the Into Indie Games walkthrough for Riven (2024).

The Starry Expanse
- Go along the walkway and ignore the machine to your left for now. Near the end of the walkway, you’ll find a wheel handle and a green button.
- Press the button and turn the wheel handle.
- Return to the machine up the stairs now and use the handle below the window three times.
- When your perspective changes, press the white button below where the handle was.
- This will send a canister off to the gold dome we saw on Temple Island. We need to do this for each of the spinning dome ‘stations’ in the Starry Expanse for a late-game puzzle.
- For now, approach the ‘station’ that you previously aligned with the green button. Go around to find a sphere with a wheel and a handle in the middle.
- You can use the wheel to turn the sphere, and the handle in the middle to toggle which direction to turn the sphere in.
- The symbols on the sphere mark the island stations, and the twin lights mark whether the station’s walkway has been extended (i.e. whether it is accessible).
- Using these controls, look for another station with twin lights on. Remember that your station was the one with the vertical line.
- The other station is a half-open vertical eye.
- When you’ve aligned the sphere to this station, go along the walkway and up the ladder.
- Here, you’ll find another canister machine, this one representing the station you’re on. Do the same as before to shoot off a canister to the gold dome.
- Go back down the ladder and into the upside-down dome ahead. Go as far as you can, so that you eventually emerge from the spinning dome and onto… Prison Island.
Prison Island
- Go down the ladder ahead and follow the walkway and up the stairs.
- You cannot enter the structure ahead just yet, but if you go up the stairs to the right, you’ll find another stroboscope, should you wish to stop the spinning dome and return to the Starry Expanse.
- For now, go down the stairs and step onto the rocky beach through the broken railing.
- Go along the beach, through tree roots until you find a totem. You might have noticed similar totems on Jungle Island.
- The totem puzzle in Riven is randomised with every playthrough, so be sure to take screenshots for later when recommended. It will save you a lot of trouble.
- Approach the ladder, but don’t go up it just yet. Instead, interact with the tree root that is tied by ropes.
- When this root is horizontal, approach it from the right and look through the eyepiece.
- Now, raise your Moiety Lens to find a symbol painted on the cliff face of Jungle Island. (You might see the ladder and bucket if you look closely).
- Take a screenshot in your notebook of this symbol.
- Now approach the totem and look for a socket with wheel handles all around it.
- Look into this socket and raise the Moiety Lens again. Align the white line on the socket with the white line above, and then take a screenshot to your notebook.
- You might want to caption these images in your notebook with something like “Prison Island Totem”, something to link the two images together.
- Now that we’re done with the totem, go up the ladder.
- Follow the roots and ladders as far up as you can go, and you’ll meet Catherine.
- Now backtrack all the way to the stroboscope we spotted earlier and use it to stop the spinning dome.
- Return to the Starry Expanse as before and use the sphere controls to get back to the Boiler Island station.
- Return to Boiler Island through the upside-down dome and then return to Gehn’s Laboratory.
- This time, take the other exit, to the Maglev station, which will take us to Survey Island.
- Press the blue button to summon the Maglev, and then use the same controls as before to get to Survey Island.
