Road to Vostok is a single-player first-person shooter set in a post-apocalyptic world. The game takes place in the border zone between Russia and Finland, and your main objective is to reach and clear out the final area known as Vostok. For more detailed information about the game, you can visit its Steam page.
Since it is a single-player experience, you might expect clearly defined tasks or a guided path to follow. However, that is not the case at all. The game does not hold your hand in any way. You are required to figure everything out on your own, which can sometimes feel frustrating, especially for new players. Due to that, this guide is here to help you. In this walkthrough, I will guide you through Area 05, which is the first area in Road to Vostok.
Disclaimer
This walkthrough of Area 05 is based on my personal playthrough in Road to Vostok. This is a semi-open world game, and there is literally no hand-holding at all. The game does not tell you where to go or what to do, so your experience may vary significantly. If you had a different experience from mine or ended up exploring different locations, that is completely understandable and expected, given the open nature of the game.

Area 05 Walkthrough – Road To Vostok
As you begin the game, you will spawn inside a shelter. This shelter acts as your haven, as no enemies can enter it under any circumstances. You do not have to worry about threats while you are inside. Additionally, every time you enter the shelter, your game will automatically save. This makes it not only the safest place in the game but also your primary save point.
Another important feature of the shelter is that you can reset the world by entering and then exiting it. Resetting the world will refresh all loot and enemies, meaning that items will respawn and enemies will reappear. This effectively allows for unlimited loot within the game, which can be very useful if you are struggling or need better gear.
When you first start, you will receive some random gear if you choose the standard difficulty setting, which I highly recommend for beginners. If you happen to get a shotgun, that is great, as it is very effective early on. However, even if you do not get one, there is no need to worry. A pistol is more than enough to get you through the early stages, at least based on my experience.
Equipping The Weapon And Filling It With Bullets

Open your inventory and make sure to equip the weapon you have been given. Simply equipping the weapon is not enough in this game, as it features a detailed and somewhat complex weapon handling system that can confuse new players during their first encounters.
Having bullets in your inventory does not automatically mean your weapon is ready to fire. You must manually load the ammunition. To do this, pick up the bullets with your mouse and drag them over to the weapon.
If you are using a shotgun, you can directly load the shells into the weapon by hovering them over it. However, if you are using a firearm that requires a magazine, the process is slightly different. You will first need to load the bullets into the magazine, and then attach the magazine to the weapon. This extra step is important and can easily be overlooked if you are not paying attention.
There is nothing of value inside the shelter in terms of loot, so you do not need to spend time searching the area. Once you are ready and your weapon is properly prepared, it is time to move out.
Head Out To The Village

Walk up to the gate and press the middle mouse button to exit the shelter and head toward the village. Before you proceed further, it is strongly recommended that you adjust your control settings to make interaction easier.
Press the Tab key to open the controls menu and look for the interact option. By default, it may be set to an inconvenient key, so change it to F for easier access. After doing that, make sure to also change the fire mode key if it is assigned to the same button, as this can cause conflicts during combat situations.
Once your controls are set up properly, you are free to explore the area. However, since the game does not provide guidance or objectives, it can feel confusing at first. That is why following a structured approach can help you progress more smoothly. In the next steps, I will guide you through exactly what you should do to get started and survive in Area 05.
Exploring The Village
Now there is not going to be anything around near you, so head out of the area and go straight ahead. Follow the path in front of you, and you will notice a building on your left side. There is nothing useful inside this building, so you can safely ignore it and continue following the path without wasting time searching it.
Loot All The Houses

On the right side, you will notice a yellow house. Go inside, and you will find some useful items. Pick up everything that seems important, and then move to the building right next to it. Loot everything inside that building as well, then continue moving along the path.
As you explore further, there is going to be a bandit in the area. While you are looting or moving around, he will eventually start shooting at you. Thankfully, enemies in this early area are not very strong, and the AI is not very smart, so even if you fail to spot him first, you likely will not take too much damage.
As soon as you see the bandit, make sure to engage him. You do not need to aim for headshots, as simple body shots will be more than enough to take him down quickly.
Kill The Bandit And Take His Weapon

Once you eliminate the bandit, go ahead and loot his body. Most of the time, the bandit will not have much on him besides his weapon. Because of that, you do not need to spend too much time searching his inventory. Simply pick up the gun and move on.
He will most likely be carrying a PM5, which you can equip as your secondary weapon. The weapon will already be loaded, so you can use it immediately without needing to add bullets right away.
However, the magazine will not be completely full. Because of this, you should remove the magazine from the weapon, refill it with bullets, and then attach it back to the gun. After that, reload the weapon if needed so it is ready for the next encounter.
Continue On The Path

Continue moving forward, pass the van, and start looting the houses in this area. You will come across another bandit corpse ahead, but it will not have any useful loot. You can safely ignore it and continue focusing on looting the surrounding buildings.
Note
You can find a lot of loot in this area, but do not forget to check medical boxes, as you will need as many meds as possible. Try to remember where you found medical supplies so you can return later after resetting the zone. That said, looting everything is not always the best idea. Some items take up a lot of space and do not have any immediate use. While they might become useful later in the game, for now, they will only fill up your inventory.
If you are willing to go back and forth between the shelter and this area, you can store extra items without any issue. This will allow you to keep valuable loot without worrying too much about inventory space.
You will not find many weapons inside these houses, but you can find magazines and wearable items such as hats, belts, gloves, and similar gear. These items might not seem very useful at first, but you can equip them directly without taking up inventory space. Since your equipment slots have plenty of room, try to fill them with as many useful items as possible.
Loot All Necessary Items

As you continue looting, you will come across a lot of food items, especially in kitchen areas. Make sure to collect as much food as you can. If your inventory starts getting full or too heavy, head back to the shelter, store the important items, and then return to continue looting.
If you have extra weapons, you can place them on the table in the shelter. Do not worry, they will not disappear. You will need as much food as possible, and since the game features infinite loot through world resets, you can always gather more when needed.
That said, you also need to pay attention to your character’s vitals. It is not just about health. You also need to manage energy, hydration, mental state, and body temperature. All of these factors play an important role in your survival.
After you are done looting this section, continue following the path you were on earlier. As you move forward, look to the left, and you will see another building. Inside, you will find some loot and possibly a couple of pistols. There will also be some ammunition, so make sure to pick everything up.
You may also come across a Mosin, which is a very solid weapon, especially in the early game. However, it takes up a lot of inventory space, so you will need to decide whether it is worth carrying at that moment.
Head Back To The Shelter

Now that you have gathered plenty of items, it is a good idea to head back to the shelter and store some of them. The reason for this is that when you die in this game, you lose everything you are carrying. You cannot retrieve your items after death, so anything in your inventory will be gone permanently.
This is likely why the game includes an infinite loot system, allowing players to recover from losses by gathering items again.
To avoid losing all your progress, you should regularly return to the shelter and store useful items. This way, even if you die during a run, you can quickly regear using the items you saved and return to where you died to deal with enemies again.
Due to this, it is very important to always keep a few good weapons, supplies, and essential items stored safely in the shelter. You have got a lot of space in your shelter, so even if you want to place your weapons in the cabinet, feel free to do so. You also won’t need all of the food, so make sure to store most of it in the shelter.
Heading Back Into The Village
Now that you have stored the necessary items in the shelter, it is time to head back into the village. Exit the shelter and continue moving straight ahead. This time, follow the path directly in front of the tractor. I am not referring to the railway track, so make sure you take the correct route. Move forward a short distance, and you will notice a path extending toward the right side.
Follow this path, and ahead of you, there will be a red barn. Cross the wooden bridge to reach it. There is not going to be a lot of loot inside, but you should still pick up anything that might be useful. Also, do not forget to check the van located near the barn, as you might find some additional items inside.
Defeat The Bandit

While you are exploring this area, a bandit may start shooting at you. If you are unable to immediately locate him, do not panic. Find cover and stay hidden. The bandit will most likely be positioned on the west side, facing toward the van, so make sure you stay out of his line of sight.
After a short while, the bandit will begin moving toward your position. This will give you a good opportunity to peek out from cover and take your shot. If he is within range, you can easily take him down with a single well-placed shot.
Once you have eliminated the bandit, head over to his body and pick up his weapon. As with other bandits, he will not be carrying much besides his gun, since they do not usually have armor or additional loot.
Find The Trader

The main reason for coming to this area is to find the trader. Look for a door on the opposite side of the van. Head over to it, open it, and go inside. Once inside, check the north side of the building, where you will find the trader.
The trader will have a variety of items available. For now, you should focus on looking for weapon scopes. If you already have a Mosin rifle, a scope will be especially useful and can significantly improve your effectiveness at longer ranges.
There are also other items available for trade, so if you see something useful, make sure to pick it up. If the trader does not have anything that interests you, you can simply return to the shelter and come back later. Before doing that, make sure to enter the shelter first, as this will reset the area when you leave again.
Once the area resets, all loot will respawn, the bandits will return, and the trader’s inventory will refresh as well. This is a very useful method that you can take advantage of. By repeating this process, you can find better items and even obtain some very strong weapons over time.
I have personally used this method many times, and it has helped me find some really useful gear. If you have the patience and time, it is definitely worth repeating this process a few times to improve your equipment and overall chances of survival.
Head Back To The Shelter

Now that you have traded some items with the trader, you may need some of those items later, since in this game, currency does not exist. You trade using items, so if you did not have enough, head back to the shelter, gather more items, and then return to the trader. However, keep in mind that this will reset his inventory, so it is a good idea to collect more loot from other areas first and then come back to trade more efficiently.
Once you have successfully completed your trades, head back to the shelter because it is now time to apply the scope to the Mosin. You should already have this gun in your possession, so after applying the scope, you can choose to keep it in your inventory, equip it for use, or simply leave it stored safely in the shelter for later.
Head Out Of The Shelter

As you exit the shelter, the world is going to reset completely. The bandits will spawn again along with the loot, so be careful because if you are not cautious, you may lose all the items you have equipped and everything that is currently in your inventory. Now is a good opportunity to search for better loot and improve your gear.
Once you exit the shelter, head straight to the tractor and follow the path toward the northeast side. You may have already looted this place earlier, but since the world has been reset entirely, you can loot the area again and then continue forward. Follow the path ahead, and you will eventually see a green house and a red house nearby.
From there, you need to follow the path on the right side. Do not turn directly right, just continue along the northeast path. On your right side, there will be a house that you have looted before, but there is no harm in looting it again since items have respawned. After you finish looting, continue following the path, and then on the right side, you will see a yellow house.
Be careful because in this house I was attacked and shot by a bandit, so the same thing could happen to you. I did not find much valuable loot in that particular house, so you can move forward afterward, where you will find more houses to explore.
Loot The Houses To Find Some Items
Usually, the best loot I have found in these houses is in the kitchen area. It will save you time if you start your search there, and if you find something valuable early, you can skip searching the rest of the house. Most of the weapons I have found so far were located in kitchens, so make sure to check those areas carefully in each house you enter.
After looting the house, head outside, move forward, and then take a left. You will find another yellow house, but if the directions feel slightly off, try to locate it yourself, since that is where I encountered another bandit. When you start shooting, it may attract additional bandits to your location because in this area, there are a total of 10 bandits.
I am not referring to just this specific spot. There are 10 bandits spread across the entirety of Area 05, and they all respawn whenever you enter the shelter. After defeating the bandits in this location, continue looting the surrounding area. If your inventory is already full, it may be a good idea to return to the trader and exchange some of your items.
Head Back To The Trader

It is very easy to get lost in this game, but as you continue playing, you will gradually become more familiar with the locations. The map is not very large or overly complicated, so do not worry too much about getting lost. Take your time, stay aware of your surroundings, and keep progressing at your own pace.
Head back to the trader, and when you arrive, his inventory will be refreshed with new items, including the possibility of better gear. If anything catches your attention, make sure to trade for it. Also, try to trade items like hit plates since they usually have high value.
Another important thing to keep in mind is to never let the trade bar become too green. What this means is that if the value is too low, the bar will appear red, and you will not be able to complete the trade. Aim for a balanced middle point, and if you cannot reach it, you can always add more items from the trader to make the trade fair and acceptable.
Exploring The Place To Find More Items

Now, exit the building and turn right. Take another right, then move forward, and you will see train tracks on the left side. There will also be some wooden logs nearby, and from there, take a sharp left turn. You will find a few blue tents in that area, and they contain an important key item.
Inside one of the blue tents, you will find some items (you may also find a cellar key, which unlocks a cellar just in front of the barn where the trader is. However, it is random, so you may not get it). Pick it up, and then you can leave the area since there is nothing else of importance here. Now that you have the cellar key, it is time to find one more key, and this time it will be for the attic.
Where To Find The Attic Key

You may have already seen the attic before, as it is located right behind the trader. If you have not noticed it yet, then as you head toward the trader from the shelter, you will see a set of stairs. At the top of those stairs, there is a locked door. That is the attic door, and in order to open it, you will need the attic key. You cannot find this key randomly anywhere in the world, as it is given as a reward for completing a specific mission.
The trader gives you tasks, and one of the tasks, called Homemade, which has a hard difficulty, rewards you with this key. You will need to give him a Kilju, and in return, he will provide you with the attic key. This attic can then serve as your new shelter, and it is a significant upgrade compared to the one you currently have.
Heading To A New Area

Now that you have explored the entirety of the village, it is time to head to a different location. From the shelter, take the northeast path and continue following it in that direction. Along the way, you will eventually come across a red car. This is an important point because you will see three different pathways there.
You can either go straight, left, or right. To the east is the school area, to the north is the highway, and to the left there is nothing of value. You can decide which direction you want to explore first. I went to the highway first, so if you want to do the same, that is completely fine. However, make sure to save your progress by heading inside the shelter beforehand. Also, do not forget to store most of the items from your inventory in the shelter.
You should keep one or two guns, along with bullets and some medical supplies. Make sure you also carry some food so your character can continue to perform well during exploration.
Head To The Highway

To reach the highway, simply go straight along the path. As you arrive, you will notice that it is quite a large area. Instead of wandering around aimlessly, cross the bridge, and you will come across a large building. Keep in mind that there is sometimes a bandit on the bridge, so stay alert. This building is a mart, and it contains a significant amount of loot. This area probably has the most loot in Area 05.
Heading Inside The Mart

Inside the mart, there will most likely be a bandit, so you need to stay alert at all times. Try to listen carefully for footsteps, and the bandit may even speak, giving away their position. Avoid sprinting inside the mart because while sprinting, you will not be able to aim properly, which can easily lead to your character dying.

After defeating the bandit, you will find a large amount of loot available. Most of the loot on the ground floor will not be inside cabinets or on shelves. Instead, you will find it inside boxes. There are many boxes on the ground floor, so make sure you search all of them thoroughly.
My inventory became full just from looting the ground floor, and if the same happens to you, it is better to return to the shelter and store your items. It may be a long walk, but it is worth it because if you die, everything in your inventory will be lost. Once you have finished looting the ground floor, move to the first floor and check the cabinets there as well.
Explore The Highway For More Loot
After you are done with the mart, it is time to explore the rest of the highway area. If you move north while facing away from the mart and then turn left, it may look like the bridge is blocked, but it is actually accessible. You are likely to encounter a bandit there, and there may also be some loot nearby. However, if you shoot the bandit, more enemies may be drawn to your location. In my playthrough, at least three bandits appeared after the initial fight.
If you do not take the left turn after heading north from the mart and instead continue straight, then turn right at the end of the path, you will reach the school. That said, it is better to return to the shelter first and then prepare properly before heading to the school.
Head To The School

Once you are ready, it is time to go to school. Make sure you have enough bandages and other healing items that can prevent your character from dying during combat.
As you arrive in the school area, you will notice some bodies ahead. You can ignore them, as they usually do not contain useful items. Just ahead, there will be a building on the right side named Sotilaskoti. There may be a bandit inside, so stay alert. Defeat the bandit and then enter the building.

You may not find a lot of loot inside, but whatever you do find will still be useful. If you want to gather more loot, exit the building and head left. It may feel like a long walk, but there are additional buildings in that direction. Loot those buildings as well, but remain cautious because bandits can be inside them too. After you finish looting, it is a good idea to return to the shelter to save your progress and store your items.
Looting The School

After that, from the Sotilaskoti building, head north. Cross the bridge, and just ahead on the left side, you will find the school. There will likely be a couple of bandits in the area, so stay alert and avoid sprinting unless you are sure there are no enemies nearby. The school is quite large and contains a decent amount of loot, so make sure you search it thoroughly and take everything that is useful.
Note
There is a gymnasium in the school, and you need a key to open it. Unfortunately, there is no dedicated place to obtain this key, as finding it is completely based on RNG. You might find it on a bandit, in a random house, or in some other unexpected location. There are no specific spots where this key is more likely to appear. The same is true for the cellar key in the village area. So, as much as I hate to say it, you will need to rely on luck to obtain the keys required to unlock certain areas in the game.
Find The Trader
Now that you are going to have a lot of loot, you may be in need of the meds. There is a trader at the school who mostly has the medical supplies. You can find him on the topmost floor of the school. He will be inside the medical room, so trade with him to get some meds.
Heading To The Outpost

Now, from the school, you can go to a new location, and that is going to be the outpost. To get there, exit the school and get on the path outside. While facing away from the school, head left and keep moving forward along the path. Stay on this route, and eventually, you will reach the outpost area.
As you arrive at the outpost, you will see a massive open field stretching out in front of you. Due to this wide space, the bandits are going to be much easier to locate from a distance. However, do not mistake them for the scarecrows placed around the field, as they can look similar at first glance.

While staying alert and on guard, head straight and continue moving through the fields carefully. Cross the wooden bridge, and eventually, you will come across a red warehouse standing out in the area.
It most likely is not worth exploring, as I did not find a single item inside during my run. So, it is better to ignore the warehouse, and from there, head to the right side and continue forward. That said, if you want to explore the area a little more and try to loot some items, feel free to do so at your own pace. However, once you have finished exploring and collecting what you need, it is time to head to the border zone.
How To Get To The Border Zone, The Second Area

The Border Zone is going to be the second area in the game, and in this area, there are not going to be any bandits at all. Instead, there are going to be armed guards patrolling the region, which makes it feel different from the previous area. So, to reach there, head back to the red warehouse and from that point, follow the path to the right side. As you keep moving ahead on this path, you will eventually notice another path branching off to the left.

Head in that direction and continue forward, and you will be able to reach the Border Zone without much trouble. Death in this area is not permanent either, which makes it slightly more forgiving for exploration. Even so, make sure to store some important items safely in the shelter before heading out, and then come back once you are ready to continue exploring further.
