Welcome to the Into Indie Games walkthrough of the Valley of the Mills area in Stonemachia.
Stonemachia is a soulslike game where you play as a pawn who can transform into other chess pieces. There are many areas in the game, and almost all of them have a lot of side content. In the Valley of the Mills, you can simply defeat the main boss and the Angelic Armor to proceed to the next area.
However, if you do that, you will miss most of the interesting bosses and areas in this region. So, in this guide, we will provide you with a complete walkthrough of the Valley of the Mills in Stonemachia. Check out the game’s Steam page for more information.

Stonemachia – Valley Of The Mills Walkthrough

As you enter the red fog gate, you will be in the Valley of the Mills. Ahead will be a chessboard for you to level up. When you are done, go ahead and a cutscene will commence. When the cutscene ends, pick up the Feral Forage right next to Derasin.
You can use this item to upgrade any of your magical armor pieces. As you have three options, choose to upgrade your favorite one. Then continue onward, and eventually you will reach an area with a lot of wooden structures. As you enter the area, the walls will rise, and a boss fight will commence.
You will now have to defeat Samael, Armoured Centurion.
Defeat Samael, Armoured Centurion

Samael will start the fight with a few swings from its weapon. It can also throw a right punch at you, so it is better that you dodge it. Strafing the punch may also be possible. Do note that Samael can perform this attack at close range as well, so stay alert.
Samael can also incorporate this attack into a combo. The boss can strike you first with its weapon and then release the right punch. After that, it can follow the attack up with a slam. This boss also has a slam combo that is fairly easy to parry. The weapon moveset is also not that tricky to understand.
However, you may feel that the boss becomes overwhelming during phase two, which starts after you have taken away roughly 50 percent of its health.
Second Phase

The second phase may seem overwhelming, mainly because of the shiny visual effects. Not much has changed mechanically. The major differences are that the boss seems a little faster and the combo strings become much longer. It could either be that, or the boss may be using different combos with very short intervals between them.
There is also a slam attack that leaves orbs in a 360-degree radius, so be wary of that as well. Samael’s swings will remain wide, so do not worry too much about the pressure. Keep parrying while steadily damaging the boss. Once the fight is over, a path will open up for you, so head through it.
At the end, there will be an angelic armor that you can fight. Defeat it, and you will obtain the armor. The fight is not that difficult, but if you find this enemy hard to parry, dodging works just fine. Once you have defeated this enemy, the path ahead will be unlocked, and you will be able to head to the next area.
However, there is much more you can do in the Valley of the Mills, so if you are interested in that, keep reading.
Exploring The Valley Of The Mills
Regardless of what you have done so far, head to the left side of the Samael boss area and continue moving forward. On the left, you will come across a camp. Inside, you will find a boss that can be a little annoying to deal with, but it is not particularly difficult once you learn its moveset.
Defeat Sir Big Cherub

Sir Big Cherub is one of the most frustrating bosses you will face so far in the game. The main reason is that it spends a lot of time running away, which leaves you with very few opportunities to land attacks. You need to be precise with your parries, especially when it starts rolling toward you. Successfully parrying this attack will create an opening for you to deal some damage.
However, if Cherub performs the rolling attack while already close to you, it will still end up far away even after a successful parry. Due to that, the best way to create an opening is to parry when the boss begins rolling from a distance and reaches you. This gives you a much better chance of staying close and capitalizing on the opening. Cherub also has a few other attacks and makes decent use of its sword during the fight.

Fortunately, those attacks are fairly straightforward to avoid. Before starting its rolling attack, the boss often performs a heavily delayed slam, so it is usually best to dodge away and avoid getting caught by the timing. It can also perform another slam attack where Cherub leaps into the air before crashing down on your position.
This move is much easier to parry and can give you a free opening. Aside from that, the boss can summon two small enemies. They are not very tanky, but they can easily distract you and pull your attention away from the fight.
Continue Exploring Further

Now, from Derasin, when you reach the bottom, instead of going straight, head right. Then move up the area and go right. You will notice that you can’t enter the area, and there will be an NPC there. So, enter this area, facing away from it, head north, and you cross the windmills. There at the side, you will find a small windmill enemy that won’t attack you.
That is where you need to drop. Do so, and you will land on a platform. As you reach down, you will find an entrance to an area. Head inside, and ahead will be a chessboard. From there, keep moving forward, and you will find a boss.
Defeat Castling

This boss will not be much of a problem for you, as you should be quite powerful by this point. Most of the attacks Castling uses will come from its hands, so they are likely to be slams. You can parry them quite easily, so make sure to stay on guard and remain aggressive.
Do note that the attacks are going to be very delayed, so don’t spam parry, or you will get punished for that. The boss also has some other moves, like a fire blast and a charged attack. In the latter, the boss charges towards you but is easily parried or dodged, so worry not.

It also has another attack when it goes on all fours and shoots fire bombs at you. It can easily be dodged, so make sure you run, jump, and then press the dodge button.
Defeat the boss and then go ahead. You will find a propeller that will allow you to perform ranged attacks, but it won’t stay with you for too long. Continue onward using the elevator, and you will exit from the area that you could enter from before. Then talk to the NPC ahead of the building for a reward.
Frattaglie Side Quest

After that, head right, and you will eventually reach Samael’s boss arena. It will be on the left side, so make your way around it to defeat some mini bosses. You will also find an NPC named Frattaglie. Talk to this NPC after defeating the mini bosses to receive a reward.
One of them is going to be on the right side of the main boss area, and the second one will be on the left side. That said, there is one. From the left side, take another left to find it, or if you are getting confused, then from the beginning area where you head down the path after talking to Derasin, head left after reaching the bottom.

The third one will be there. Once you have defeated all three of them, you can go back to Frattaglie to get your reward.
Soldier Mouse Side Quest

Now, you need to head into a new area. From the windmill enemy, turn right and head up the area on the left side. There will be a chessboard and a Sea Gargoyle. Defeat the Gargoyle to unlock the area. Once you have defeated the enemy, head north from the chessboard. Continue forward while defeating the enemies, and when you think you have reached a dead end, climb up the wooden platforms.
Ahead will be an NPC, SoldierMouse. Talk to it, and a quest will begin. Now, instead of heading north, move forward a little and then head left. Follow the path, and you will exit the building, which is fine because you need to go somewhere else now.

Head right, go up the platform, and then enter the building. This building was previously locked, so enter it, and the quest will progress further. Then talk to the NPC ahead, and you will receive your reward.
Unlock The Path

Now, in the previous area where you found all of these NPCs, you went left instead of heading north to leave the area. On the north side, there is a path, but it will be blocked. You need to find a key enemy to unlock it.
For that, head back from where you talked to the NPC. There will be a windmill enemy there. Attack it to gain a burst of wind and then jump to the top of the tallest building.

The key enemy will be on the opposite side of the path you need to unlock. You will also find a Sea Gargoyle there. This location is directly opposite the area that you want to unlock. Once you have defeated the key enemy, head back to the blocked path, enter it, and drop down. You will then reach a new area.
In order to reach where the key is, you will need to attack another windmill enemy for a gust of wind. Then, using that, go ahead and destroy the key to unlock the path.
Hanging Crosses Lake

Use the chessboard to level up and then move ahead to find a boss. This is more of a gimmick boss fight where you have to destroy all of the eyes. First, destroy all of the eyes at the bottom, and then, using the gusts of wind, destroy the remaining ones.

Stepping into the red circles will not damage you immediately, but an attack will eventually emerge from them, so it is better to stay out of their range. The boss overall will not be difficult, so focus on destroying the eyes to take care of it. If the boss does not go down even after destroying all of the eyes, you may have missed one, so check every side carefully and finish the fight.
Afterward, head inside the small area within the windmill, and you will reach a new area.
Dulcinea’s Heart

Move forward, and you will trigger a boss fight. You now have to fight Don Quixote, which is not going to be particularly challenging.
Defeat Don Quixote

When the boss attacks with the left sword, it is likely to follow up with a poke. The boss also moves forward during this attack, so the movement itself may have a hitbox.
When it slashes from the right side, it can follow up with a twin slash and then chain into another slash afterward. Once you have taken away 50 percent of its health, the second phase will begin, and the attack strings will become slightly different. The attacks will look much flashier, but they will also be easier to parry.
Do remember that the boss can perform the twin slash follow-up twice in a row, and some of its other attacks may also come out very quickly. Once the fight is over, the area will collapse, and you will have to fight the main boss of the area, Samael.

If you have already defeated Samael, head up the platform, defeat the angelic armor, and then proceed through the red fog gate. With that, the walkthrough of the Valley of the Mills area in Stonemachia comes to an end.
