Tales of Berseria Remastered features a story of revenge and betrayal, where you play the role of Velvet Crowe. As the game begins, you’ll have to play through the prologue first, which does a great job of setting the pace for what’s to come in the game. The world of Tales of Berseria is afflicted by a Daemonblight. It is a strange and evil power that turns most people into monsters. Only those who have learned excorist artes and Malaks can hope to stand against any Daemons.

The Crowe Family
As the story begins, you’ll see an intro cutscene, which shows Artorius rescuing Velvet and Laphicet under a crimson moon. Artorius then says he’s going to rescue Celica, his wife, who is also Velvet and Laphicet’s elder sister.
After being chased by the Deamons, Velvet finally reaches the cape, where she finds Artorius and Celica, who has already passed away.

A short cutscene then reveals the present Velvet inside a cell. And then, another cutscene plays that shows the life of the Crowe family 10 years after Celica’s passing.
Velvet has now grown into a caring elder sister who is always looking out for her frail younger brother, Laphicet. Arthur is still taking care of the Crowe family, even after his wife passed away.

In The Past
For a reason, Arthur can’t go and fetch Laphicet’s medicine, and that’s why Velvet will have to do that now. To get the medicine, you’ll need Gald first.
Velvet plans to go to the woods outside the village and hunt some prickleboars, hoping to trade their meat for Laphicet’s medicines. Head outside of Velvet’s house and head straight to the village. Once you’re inside the village, take the path towards the east.

The path will lead you to the Tranquil Woods. Here, you’ll find some prickleboars. The battles here are mostly just tutorial fights, and they’ll teach you how the game’s combat works.
Once you’re inside the woods and have defeated some prickleboars, you can exit from the path on the east side of the area. You’ll then arrive on the cape.

There’s a prickleboar here, and once you’ve defeated it, you can check out the shrine ruins on the cape. Return to the shop in the village once that’s done.
As you’re passing through the Tranquil Woods, the parents of all the prickleboars you’ve hunted so far will be waiting to ambush you. Once you defeat all of them, one of them will be affected by the Deamonblight and turn into a Deamon.

Arthur will appear just in time to save you. But he leaves shortly after. Return to the shop in the village, and the shopkeeper will tell you that the medicine isn’t here yet. Velvet’s friend Riko suggests that she buy a comb for her pretty hair.

Laphicet
As you return home, you’ll find Laphicet admiring a drawing of a compass. Velvet pushes him back into the bed and offers to make him dinner.
You’ll then have to head to the kitchen and find the spices upstairs to prepare a meal for him. Once you both head to bed, you’ll then wake up the next day, but Laphicet is nowhere to be found.

After going through the village, you’ll find Laphicet in the Tranquil Woods. He had copied one of Arthur’s books and sold it to the shopkeeper to buy something for Velvet.
He then asks to head to the cape to gather some flowers for Cecila, since it is her memorial day, and also another night with the lunar eclipse, where the moon turns red.

As you go to the cape, Laphicet will give Velvet the comb he bought for her. However, you’re suddenly attacked by a Deamon.
You can’t deal any damage to it, but you just have to survive the fight for a little while until Arthur comes to the rescue.

The Betrayal
Velvet wakes up, seeing Laphicet near him as he gives him the comb. Velvet then dozes off again, but she wakes up again, and this time, Laphicet is nowhere to be found.
As Velvet exits her house, you’ll find that all of the villagers have turned into Daemons. You can’t fight against them, and if you enter battle against them, you must flee.

Make your way to the Cape. Here, you’ll find Arthur and Laphicet standing in front of the shrine. Arthur casts a binding magic on you, holding you in place. He then sacrifices Laphicet in the shrine, fueling Velvet’s unending rage and hatred for him.
Once the sacrifice has commenced, Velvet jumps after Laphicet in the shrine, and is soon kicked out of it. A bunch of Malaks descend from the sky, and Velvet is finally able to see Seres, Arthur’s Malak, and several others.

After being kicked out of the shrine, Velvet’s left arm turns into a monstrosity, able to devour Deamons with ease. You’ll then have to fight multiple daemons until Seres finally puts her to rest, and then Velvet will be imprisoned.

Unexpected Aid
It has been three years since Velvet was imprisoned. She had been consuming any Daemons the prison threw into her cell. One day, Seres will arrive, and she’ll conduct a test where you’ll have to fight against her.
Once the battle is over, Seres reveals that she is no longer Arthur’s Malak, and she plans to rescue Velvet because their wish is one and the same.

She’ll dispel the seal on her cage, setting Velvet free to escape the cell. She also tells Velvet that there’s a ship waiting at the back docks, which can be used to escape the island.
Seres also reveals that the events three years ago, on that crimson night, are referred to as the Advent. Several Malaks descended upon the land after Laphicet’s sacrifice, and they helped the exorcists in their fight against the Daemons.

She also reveals that Artorius is now the leader of the exorcists’ Abbey and has the favor of the public and the kingdom.

Exploring Titania
As you exit the cell, make your way ahead. You’ll have to go up a long pair of stairs until you arrive in the storeroom. Here, you’ll find a sword called the Stormhowl, but Velvet has no use for it. She also finds some clothes to wear.
There’s a save point right ahead. Take the path going left. From here, follow the quest marker. You’ll soon arrive in a section with lots of prisoners. Seres will set them all free. You’ll also hear the mention of Van Aifread, a pirate, who was the only person to successfully escape the prison.

As you leave the section, you’ll soon encounter Magilou, a self-proclaimed witch. She’s on her way shortly after. Take the path straight after leaving the prison section.
In the next section, you’ll find a save point and a chest. Progress ahead, and you’ll encounter a Daemon Swordsman. You’ll have to battle against him, but it will be revealed that this man is looking for the Stormhowl.

Velvet tells the man the location of the sword, and he immediately leaves to pick it up, thanking Velvet for her help.
You have to take the left turn ahead of the save point, and that will allow you to circle towards the exit to the west of the map. This will lead you straight to the watchtower.

Once you’re at the watchtower, you’ll have to find some Orderly soldiers before you can jump off the watchtower. From there, it’s a straight path towards the main entrance.

Preator Oscar, Seres, And The Dragon
Before the main gate, you’ll encounter Praetor Oscar, alongside his two Malak. In the battle, it’s best to focus on his two Malak first, before fighting against Oscar.
After you’ve brought down Oscar’s HP a little, the battle will end. Oscar will send one of his Malak to hold you in place, while he’ll use the other Malak to use an arte to defeat you.

You’ll avoid the attack, but the Malak is defeated. Shortly, the defeated Malak will turn into a Daemon. The Daemon, which is now a dragon, attacks Velvet, but Seres saves her by sacrificing herself.
Seres then asks Velvet to consume her. It will be revealed that Seres was actually Celica after she turned into a Malak after being sacrificed by Arthur. She gives Velvet the comb that Laphicet bought for her.

Consuming Seres gives Velvet new strength and powers. You’ll then have to fight against the dragon. Once the dragon has been defeated, Velvet will consume it as well.
Velvet then shoots a fireball from her daemon arm towards Oscar, injuring him. His Malak then teleports him out. As you’re trying to find a way out, you’ll encounter Magilou and the Daemon Swordsman, Rangetsu.

A cutscene will then reveal Rangetsu, Magilou, and Velvet stealing a boat from the docks as they make their way to the sea. But they likely won’t be able to go far without a proper crew and a navigator. The cutscene will also end the prologue.
