Welcome to the Into Indie Games walkthrough for The Darkest Files.

Note that this walkthrough is for the game’s Investigator mode, which requires more detailed solutions than Story mode.

A New Job

Start by going up the stairs and open the door to the officer with the plaque Esther Katz.

After conversing with Paula, go around the desk and interact with each of the objects in the box on the desk.

Next, read the letter on the desk and check the newspaper. The intercom should sound after this: answer it.

Now head out of your office and take a left to go straight to Fritz Bauer’s office.

After this conversation, you’ll have quite a few things to do. Let’s start by assigning Paula some tasks.

Talk to Paula and mention that you need some additional documents, then select “NS organisations”.

Also invite your first witness, Ludmilla Naumann while you’re talking to Paula.

Next, go to Christoph Wohlmuth’s office, which is immediately to the left of Paula.

Talk to Christoph to get the Archive key, and then go downstairs again.

The Archive can be found immediately to the left as you get to the bottom of the stairs. Open the door now.

Go to the left and check the middle shelf of files. Then, select the rightmost file, which is relevant to your case.

Now exit the archive, and go back up the stairs. Now go to the office by the window and enter it.

With all this done, we only have one task for the day: reviewing your case file. You can do this anywhere by bringing up the radial menu, or you can go to your office and view it on your desk.

When you’re done, go down the stairs and exit through the front door.

The Widow

Start by going up the stairs as usual and talk to Paula.

Now go to your office and get behind your desk. Here, check your inbox to get your objectives for the day.

Below this note, you’ll also find the documents you asked for and the daily newspaper.

Shortly after, the intercom will ring – answer it to learn that Mrs Naumann is here.

You have two urgent tasks for now, and one ‘other task’. We’ll begin with Ludmilla Naumann, as it would be rude to keep her waiting.

Exit the office and go right to find the Conference Room. Enter it to start the interrogation.

Here, we’ll enter Memory mode.

Before continuing, check a couple of optional spots:

The grandfather clock
The photographs on the right-side wall

Then, open the door. Interact with either of the two men that step in.

Quickly interrupt Naumann after she mentions seeing two stripes on their uniform.

When your case file is opened, go to “Background”, then the document depicting the “Uniform and Rank Insignia of the Political Leaders of the NSDAP”.

Here, select the insignia at the bottom, labelled “Local Group”.

Continue the interrogation and then interact with either the speech bubble or Hans Naumann.

When you gain movement control, go to the window next to the front door, and interact with it to get your final additional information.

That’s all the information you can get here, so exit through the golden doorway to leave the memory.

After the memory, continue the interrogation and interrupt Naumann again.

The correct document this time is in “Old Case”. Look for the document with the header “Munich, 28 April 1945”, signed by Herbert Schwarz. Here, the correct paragraph is “Mittermoser is certain that he recognised…”.

Upon completing this interrogation, go straight to the end of the corridor to enter Mr Bauer’s office and converse with him.

After this conversation, we’ll call the number Paula wrote down. Go to your office, use the phone on your desk, and select “Number Paula wrote down”.

Following the phone call, talk to Paula and ask him about Peters to get that task out of the way.

Talk to Paula again and this time, request documents from her. Request the “Suspect Personel Files”.

Next, invite a witness. For this walkthrough, we’ll go with Hermann Kiebitz first.

Our final task is to meet with Simon Peters, so go to his office now to talk to him.

This concludes your day, so as usual, go down the stairs and out the front door.
