Welcome to Into Indie Games’ walkthrough for The Life and Suffering of Prince Jerian Chapter 2, The Heir.
The Life and Suffering of Prince Jerian is a narrative role-playing game in which you play as Jerian, the crown prince. From the very beginning of his life, every major decision is in your hands, allowing you to shape his personality, relationships, and the direction of his journey. If you would like to learn more about the game, be sure to check out its Steam page.
Because the game places such a heavy emphasis on player choice, making the right decision at every turn can be quite challenging. We have already published our walkthrough for Chapter 1. In this guide, we will provide a complete walkthrough of Chapter 2, The Heir, in The Life and Suffering of Prince Jerian.
Disclaimer
As The Life and Suffering of Prince Jerian features a large number of choices and branching paths, this Chapter 2 walkthrough is based entirely on the decisions we made during our own playthrough. Your choices may differ from ours, which means you could experience different outcomes or encounter events that never appeared in our playthrough. Likewise, some events and decisions covered in this guide will only be available if you closely follow the same choices we made, so keep that in mind while using this walkthrough.
Table of contents
16 Years Old – The Wondrous New World & The Family Portrait

As you begin Chapter 2, The Heir in Their Life and Suffering of Prince Jerian, a cutscene will play before the chapter officially begins. The first book you will go through is The Wondrous New World.
As you progress through this book, your Legacy of Tempest will increase by five points by the end, bringing your total Legacy to 10. After that, the next book, The Family Portrait, will begin. In this book, you will learn more about Jerian’s family, and by the end, you will be presented with several options to choose from.
A new mechanic called Lock of Legacy will also be introduced. To unlock these special choices, you must have enough Legacy points. There will be four options available, and the best choice is the last one, which will most likely already be unlocked for you.
Do note that selecting this option will increase Love by one point while reducing Law by one point. It will also strengthen your relationships with Ferdinand and Gaius.
The remaining options will strengthen your relationship with the specific character whose side you decide to support.
Triumph Of The Best

The next book will now begin. In this book, you will learn more about the Arknian family traditions and the Blood Tide. Jerian will also receive a gift from his father. Later, Jerian’s parents ask him to choose a motto, and you will have to select one from four different options.
The third option is locked and cannot be selected because it requires the Lock of Fate. The Burden of Supremacy will increase Love by one point while reducing Law by one point. It will also strengthen your relationship with Uther Tempest.
Justice of the Strongest will reduce Love by one point and increase Law by one point. It will also strengthen your relationship with Servilia Tempest. However, the last option will only be available if you previously unlocked the Charles event. Choosing it will strengthen your Will while weakening your Blood. In addition, your Diplomacy skill will increase.
We went with the last option.
The Big Game

In this book, you witness a chess match between Gaius and Jerian. As you continue through the story, an event pop-up will appear. Before the chapter ends, you must meet the required conditions to select one of two available events.
You can either choose Symbol of Human Hope or Symbol of Arknian Hope. To unlock either event, you must first meet its required conditions.
After that, you will learn how Jerian can eventually become the head of the Tempest family. To achieve this, you will need strong relationships with Uther Tempest, Cornelius Tempest, and Servilia Tempest. Later, Gaius asks Jerian whether he needs help with anything, and you will have four different responses to choose from.
Choosing the first option will strengthen your relationship with your family. Selecting the second option will improve your relationship with the Great Houses and the Distinguished Arknians.
Choosing the third option will improve your relationship with the Human Nobility and the Commoners. However, selecting the last option will reduce Logic by one point while increasing Passion by one point.
It will also grant one point each in Management and Diplomacy, while strengthening your relationship with Gaius.
We went with the second option.
Lessons In Decorum

Once your relationship with the Arknians has improved, the next book, Lessons in Decorum, will begin. In this book, a refined woman begins flirting with Jerian. However, Jerian does not realize that she is Gaius’ fiancee.
While the two are flirting, Gaius arrives and asks his fiancee whether she would like to go home. You will then be given three options. Choosing the first option, asking them to stay, will reduce Logic by one point while increasing Passion by one point.
It will also strengthen your relationship with Camille Monorogue. The second option, volunteering to take Camille home, will increase your Will by one point while reducing Blood by one point. However, your relationship with Gaius will weaken, while your relationship with Camille will improve significantly.
The final option is the most logical choice. It will increase your Logic and Diplomacy, reduce Passion, and strengthen your relationship with Gaius.
A Long-Awaited Meeting

This event is triggered if the Charles event has already been unlocked and you rescued either Martha or Emil. During this event, you will learn that Emil has proposed to Martha, and she accepted his proposal. This happens even if your relationship with Martha has already been maxed out.
Your meeting with Cornelius will then begin. After your conversation, you must choose between three different options. Selecting either of the first two options will permanently sever your ties with both Martha and Emil.
The first option will increase both your relationship with Cornelius and your Logic. The second option will increase Passion and Management. The third option, on the other hand, allows you to take both of them under your patronage.
We chose the third option, Take Them Under Your Wing, because it helps Jerian retain his previous identity.
The Emperor’s Will

In this book, you will witness a tournament taking place while Jerian has a conversation with his father, Uther. During their discussion, Uther asks Jerian to help him make an important decision. You must now decide which Arknian should win the tournament.
There are three available choices. The first option will weaken your relationship with Uther, so it is best to avoid it. The second and third options are both excellent choices, but the third option is locked unless you have at least five points in Diplomacy.
The third option simply strengthens your relationship with Uther. The second option, however, increases your Management skill, strengthens your relationship with Uther, and weakens your relationship with the Distinguished Arknians.
We went with the second option.
The Shape of the Future

The next book is The Shape of the Future. In this book, Jerian and Cornelius go horseback riding together and have a deep conversation about the capital and the Empire. During their discussion, Cornelius tells Jerian that he will be hosting a party later that week and leaves the decision of who to invite entirely up to him.
You will now have to make a decision. There are four available options. The third option has the Lock of Fate and will only be unlocked if you have a good relationship with Ferdinand or if you previously unlocked the Teacher’s Pet event.
However, the fourth option has both the Lock of Sanity and the Lock of Legacy. This choice will only become available if you have at least five points in the Management skill and six points in either Passion or Blood.
The third option is the best choice because it improves your relationship with both the Distinguished Arknians and the Human Nobility. It also strengthens your Management and Diplomacy skills while improving your relationship with Cornelius.
On the other hand, the first option improves your standing with the Distinguished Arknians, increases your Diplomacy skill, and strengthens your relationship with Gaius. The second option improves your relationship with the Human Nobility and Ferdinand while increasing your Management skill.
We went with the third option.
The Law Of Might

The next book is The Law of Might. You will now witness a memory from the life of one of Jerian’s ancestors. The memory takes place from the perspective of Jerian I of House Tempest, a consul of the Arknian Republic, commander of the Legion, and Eterna’s champion during the war against the Scriad group.
During the memory, he proposes a strategy to the assembly to stop the enemy’s attack. As you continue through the scene, the memory gradually becomes more vivid, and you, as Jerian, step out of Jerian I’s body. Jerian I then asks you what gives you the right to rule, forcing you to make an important decision.
You can either agree with him, disagree with him, or call for mercy. The first option has the Lock of Sanity and can only be selected if you have at least seven points in Will. Choosing this option increases the Legacy of Tempest by 10 points, reduces Will by three points, and increases Blood by three points.
The second option increases Will by one point while reducing Blood by one point. The final option, on the other hand, reduces the Legacy of Tempest by five points, increases Love by one point, reduces Law by one point, and also increases your Management skill by one point.
We went with the second option.
17 Years Old – Selecting The Project

After turning 17, you, as Jerian, will now be able to select projects. A new project can be chosen at the beginning of each year. At this point, you will not be able to select any Imperial Affairs projects, so you should choose one from the Personal Affairs category instead.
There are three projects available to choose from: Finest Instructors, Family Tree, and Inventory of Resources. The first project increases Logic by one point while reducing Passion by one point. It also improves your Diplomacy, Management, and Scholarship skills.
The second project increases the Legacy of Tempest by 10 points. It also reduces Will by one point while increasing Blood by one point. Overall, this is a solid choice since the tradeoff is not particularly severe. The third project increases the Power of Tempest by two points.
We went with the first project.
Winds Of Change
After you have chosen your project, the next event, Winds of Change, will begin. This event focuses on the growing rebellion against the Empire and the unrest that continues to spread throughout the realm.
A World Without Borders

This book begins with Jerian reuniting with Ferdinand, whom he has not seen for nearly half a year. During their conversation, Ferdinand shows Jerian a heliograph and tries to convince him to abolish the priests’ monopoly over silver.
You now have to make a decision. You can either agree with him, deny his proposal, or suggest a compromise. Agreeing with Ferdinand will weaken your relationship with the New Faith Clergy, increase Scholarship by one point, and improve your relationship with Ferdinand.
The second option has a Lock of Fate and will not be unlocked unless you have enough Logic points. Choosing this option will weaken your relationship with Ferdinand and inflict the Shattered Hopes effect on him.
Suggesting a compromise will grant Jerian access to silver while also improving his relationship with Ferdinand.
We chose the first option.
A Gift For His Highness

After making your decision regarding the silver, the next book begins, where you meet Ovidius Lucullus, the Legion Commander. During your meeting, he offers Jerian a foreign dancer named Agatha as a gift.
However, Agatha refuses to perform a dance for Jerian for several personal reasons. She explains those reasons throughout the book, after which you must make a decision. There are three available options.
Selecting the first option will increase Love by one point while reducing Law by one point. It will also strengthen your relationship with Agatha. The second option will increase Logic by one point while reducing Passion by one point, and it will also strengthen your relationship with Agatha.
The third option improves your relationship with the Great Houses and Ovidius. It also increases your Diplomacy skill by one point. We went with the second option.
The Emperor’s Dream

This event only triggers if you have a good relationship with Uther Tempest and his hopes have not been shattered. During this event, the current emperor, who is also Jerian’s father, attempts to shift many of his responsibilities onto Jerian, while Gaius openly disagrees with the idea.
Uther wants Jerian to handle the Empire’s urgent affairs while he clears his mind by embarking on a pilgrimage. You must now make an important decision.
The first option has the Lock of Sanity, which you can unlock if you meet its requirements. Choosing this option improves your relationship with Uther but weakens your relationships with Cornelius and Gaius. It also weakens your relationship with the Old Faith Clergy while increasing your Management skill.
The second option weakens your relationship with Uther but strengthens your relationships with Servilia, Cornelius, and Gaius. However, it also reduces Will by one point while increasing Blood by one point.
The third option has both the Lock of Legacy and the Lock of Sanity. Choosing it shifts the Empire further toward Dogmatism, weakens your relationship with Uther, and improves your relationships with both the Old Faith Clergy and the New Faith Clergy.
We unlocked the Lock of Sanity and selected the first option.
Fractured

This event only triggers if you lose a Sanity point. Spending a Sanity point causes Jerian to descend further into madness, and because Sanity points are extremely limited, you should be very careful about when you choose to spend them.
Among the three available options, you should choose either Blood or Will. Selecting Blood increases Logic, Love, and Blood, while reducing Will, Law, and Passion. Choosing Will has the exact opposite effects.
We went with the second option, Will.
The Meal

After making your previous decision, the event continues for a short while before the next book, The Meal, begins. In this book, Jerian sits down to share a meal with his family. During dinner, Servilia and Gaius get into a heated argument, although Servilia is more responsible for causing the conflict.
You now have another decision to make. Ignore the last option and focus only on the first three choices. The most logical option is the first one. It weakens your relationship with Servilia while strengthening your relationships with Cornelius and Gaius.
The second option weakens your relationship with Cornelius but improves your relationships with Servilia and Gaius.
The third option only weakens your relationship with Uther.
We went with the third option.
A Graceless Miracle

In this book, you will learn more about the gods and take part in a religious ceremony. During the ceremony, a dispute breaks out between followers of the New Faith and believers of the Old Faith. You must now make an important decision.
You can either side with the New Faith, support the Old Faith, or simply admit that you do not know the answer to their question. The first option improves your relationship with the New Faith Clergy, increases Love, and reduces Law.
The second option improves your relationship with the Old Faith Clergy, reduces Love, and increases Law. The third option improves your Scholarship skill while also strengthening your relationship with Terentius Orgrif.
We went with the first option.
A new event, The Advance of the New Faith, will then begin. During this event, you will notice that the influence of Dogmatism throughout the Empire begins to decline.
The Masquerade

In this book, you discover that Jerian’s mother, Servilia, has been having an affair with Cornelius despite being married to the Emperor. She attempts to justify her actions by claiming that wearing a mask completely changes a person’s personality. You must now decide how Jerian will respond.
There are three available options: Refuse Servilia, Protect Your Family’s Honor, and Ask Other Arknians for Help. Choosing the first option weakens your relationship with Servilia and inflicts the Shattered Hope effect on her.
The second option weakens the loyalty of the Human Nobility but improves your relationship with Servilia. It also increases your Diplomacy skill.
The third option simply improves your relationship with Servilia.
We chose the third option.
Over The Horizon

This event is triggered if you did not shatter Ferdinand’s hopes and have at least three points in your relationship with him. During this event, Gaius and Ferdinand get into an argument, and you must make a decision. There are three available options, with the first option, Support Ferdinand, having the Lock of Sanity.
This option will be unlocked if you have at least eight points in Logic, although you can still open it without meeting the requirement, which will have consequences. Choosing this option unlocks the Expedition Fleet event, weakens your relationship with the Human Nobility, Servilia, and Gaius, improves your relationship with Ferdinand, and increases your Scholarship skill by one point.
The second option, Agree with Gaius, increases the Legacy of Tempest by five points, reduces Will by one point, and increases Blood by one point. It also improves your relationships with Servilia and Gaius while weakening your relationship with Ferdinand.
The last option, Create a Trade Fleet, has both the Lock of Sanity and the Lock of Legacy. This option will be unlocked if you have seven or fewer points in Blood and at least five points in Scholarship. Selecting this option improves your relationships with the Human Nobility, the Commoners, Servilia, and Gaius.
It also weakens the Empire’s grip on tradition, weakens your relationship with Ferdinand, and inflicts the Shattered Hopes effect on him.
We went with the third option.
A Knight Is Born

This event only triggers if you previously took Emil under your patronage. During this event, Emil asks Jerian to grant him noble status, which is a rather significant request. There are four options to choose from.
If you choose the first option, Love is reduced by one point while Law is increased by one point, and all ties with Emil are permanently severed. Choosing the second option increases your Management skill by one point and makes Emil your favorite.
The third option weakens your relationship with Emil but grants him the title of Noble of the Mantle.
The last option increases your Scholarship skill by one point and also grants Emil the title of Noble of the Mantle.
We went with the first option.
Betrothed

In this book, Jerian’s fiancee and future Empress is introduced. Shortly afterward, a disagreement begins over who should become Jerian’s wife. At the end of the book, you must make an important decision. There are three available options: Invoke Your Blood, Invoke the Twin’s Law, and Break Off the Engagement.
The first option increases the Legacy of Tempest by five points, reduces Will by one point, and increases Blood by one point. It also improves your relationship with Lucretia Orgrif.
If you choose the second option, Love is reduced by one point instead of Will, while Law is increased by one point instead of Blood.
The third option increases your Diplomacy skill by one point, weakens your relationship with Servilia, and changes Lucretia Orgrif’s status to your former fiancee.
We went with the third option.
Prayer

In this event, Jerian’s father makes a confession to him, and you must decide how to respond. There are four available options, and none of them have particularly severe consequences, so you can safely choose whichever one you prefer.
The first option increases Love by one point while reducing Law by one point. The second option has the opposite effect and also improves your relationship with Uther Tempest. Choosing the third option increases your Scholarship skill by one point.
However, the most interesting choice is the fourth option. It has both the Lock of Fate and the Lock of Legacy. This option is unlocked if you have seven or fewer points in Blood and at least one point in your relationship with Agatha.
We went with the third option.
The Holy Pact

In this book, you learn about the Holy Pact between the Twins, and your ancestor attempts to persuade you to accept it. You must now make a decision. There are three available choices: Accept Erik the Pious, Mentor Erik the Pious, or Reject Erik the Pious.
The first option has the Lock of Sanity and is unlocked if you have seven or fewer points in Love. Choosing it increases the Legacy of Tempest by 10 points, reduces Love by three points, and increases Law by three points.
The second option reduces the Legacy of Tempest by five points, increases Love by one point, reduces Will by one point, and also increases your Scholarship skill by one point.
The last option increases Will by one point while reducing Blood by one point.
We chose the last option.
18 Years Old – Selecting A Project Again

As Jerian turns 18, you must select another Personal Affairs project because the Imperial Affairs projects are still unavailable. Last time we selected Finest Instructors, but this time we went with Family Tree because our Legacy of Tempest was only 10.
This project increases the Legacy of Tempest by 10 points. It only reduces Will by one point while increasing Blood by one point, making the tradeoff well worth it.
What The Heart Wants

In this book, Jerian speaks with his father, Uther, about love and what he should do moving forward. After their conversation, you must choose from four different options.
The first option increases both your Management and Scholarship skills by one point.
The second option is only available if Lucretia is still your fiancee. Choosing it reduces Love by two points, increases Law by two points, and also improves your Diplomacy skill.
The third option involves visiting Camille, who is Gaius’ fiancee, making it a morally questionable decision. Choosing this option reduces Blood by two points while increasing Will by two points. It also requires at least one point in your relationship with Camille, and if you have at least five points in the Legacy of Tempest, you will be able to unlock it.
The last option increases Love by two points while reducing Law by two points. It also improves your Diplomacy skill and strengthens your relationship with Agatha.
We chose the first option.
The Empty Throne
As the Emperor continues leaving the throne vacant, the rebellion against the Empire grows stronger and gains additional momentum.
The Emperor’s Time

This book reveals that the time has finally come for Uther to step down, leaving Jerian to shoulder his responsibilities. Although those around him have already begun making plans, the final decision ultimately rests with you.
There are four options to choose from, although some may be locked depending on your choices and stats. The first option increases Will by one point while reducing Blood by one point. It weakens your relationships with Uther and Servilia but strengthens your relationship with Cornelius.
The second option reduces the Power of Tempest by two points and the Legacy of Tempest by 15 points. It also inflicts the Disappointment effect on Uther.
The third option is unlocked if you have at least four relationship points with Uther, Cornelius, and Servilia.
In addition, if you have at least 20 points in the Legacy of Tempest, you can unlock the Lock of Legacy. Keep in mind that unlocking this option consumes all 20 Legacy points.
The last option has both the Lock of Sanity and the Lock of Fate. Choosing it increases the Power of Tempest, adds 10 points to the Legacy of Tempest, reduces Will by one point, and increases Blood by one point.
We chose the second option as it is too soon for Jerian to become the head.
The Address

During this event, you must make another major decision, but two of the available options will most likely remain locked because their requirements are extremely demanding. This may reflect how difficult it is to become the head of the House at such a young age.
There are going to be four options to choose from. If the first option is unlocked for you, make sure to choose it instead, as it improves your relationship with all Estates while reducing the level of Rebellion. If you followed our walkthrough, then the first option for you should be unlocked.
We had 14 points in Loyalty of the Great Houses, 13 in Human Nobility, and 13 in New Faith Clergy. So, if you followed our walkthrough perfectly, you should also have the same stats.
Afterward, a new book titled The First Fruit will begin. Read through it, and once it concludes, Chapter 2, The Heir in The Life and Suffering of Prince Jerian, will come to an end.
