Carmageddon: Rogue Shift – 7 Beginner Tips & Tricks

carmageddon guides

Carmageddon: Rogue Shift is the latest entry in the beloved Carmageddon series, bringing back that classic no-holds-barred vehicular combat racing with a roguelike twist. The early few hours of the game can feel quite unforgiving. You’ll have minimal upgrades to work with, and the starter car, though decent, starts to fall off the further you get along the run path.

But don’t worry, we’ve got you covered! This guide will arm you with 7 simple yet essential tips and tricks to help you get past the early hurdles and find your footing in Carmageddon: Rogue Shift.

Understand the Meta Progression

Unlike previous entries in the series, Carmageddon: Rogue Shift is a full-fledged roguelite. And like any roguelite, you’re going to fail a lot as you unlock new upgrades that make you stronger for your future runs.

Understanding how the Meta Progression works in the game is essential if you want to make consistent progress.

Each run starts at the Black Market, where you can spend Beatcoins to unlock different upgrades. The upgrades range from new Cars, Weapon Variants, Workshop Upgrades or even Permanent Upgrades that remain active throughout each run. Beatcoins are earned by completing different nodes throughout each run, which means you’ll be making progress even if you don’t manage to beat the Section Boss at the end of a Run Path.

During the early stage of the game, your goal should be to unlock as many Permanent Upgrades as possible, along with a few new Cars to try out and see which one feels better for you.

Each Vehicle in the game handles differently and comes with unique perks and weapon variants installed. Having a few different Cars unlocked quickly will let you experiment with different options and see what works best for you.

Learn The Events & Maps

Carmageddon: Rogue Shift features three distinct Event types spread across a variety of maps, and understanding how each one works can significantly improve your chances of surviving a run.

Death Race is the most common game mode, where you have to complete multiple laps and finish in the top three to advance. This is the most common game mode.

Survival, on the other hand, challenges you to stay alive for a set number of laps. The maps for Survival game mode are packed with hazards like Spitters and Boomers that can quickly wreck your vehicle if you’re not careful.

Finally, there’s the Elite Race. This mode plays similarly to Death Race, but with one major twist: you must secure first place to move on. Elite Race nodes are rare, but they reward significantly more Beatcoins and Credits, making them well worth the risk if you feel confident in your build.

As you replay the same maps across multiple runs, you’ll naturally develop a better understanding of each circuit. You will start to recognize where traps tend to spawn, when enemy hordes usually charge in, and which routes are safest or most dangerous. Use the map knowledge to your advantage. It’ll help you more than any Repair pickups in the long run.

Scout The Nodes For the Best Route

Whenever you start a new run, make sure you check the nodes to see the different event maps. This will let you plan ahead to find a route that’s most viable for your build.

Want to rack up as many Credits or Beatcoins as possible? Make sure you’re picking as many races as you can. Elite events offer more rewards, but they are also riskier, requiring you to place 1st to progress.

If you’re running low on health, look for the quickest route to the next Mechanic node. For a boost in weapon damage, or to change your primary weapon, search for Weapon Dealer nodes. There’s also a Scavange Hunt node that will let you open up to 6 containers for additional loot.

Repairs, Boost, and Ammo

As you’re speeding along the track, you’ll find different drops on the circuit. The two main drops are Ammo and Repairs. Ammo pickups will add ammo for your current Weapon, and Repair will slightly increase the current health of your vehicle. Collect enough Repair pickups, and you won’t have to worry about hitting the Mechanic node at all during your runs.

Your vehicle is also equipped with a Boost (more are unlockable later on), but you won’t find any pickups for it. To refill your Boost meter, you need to mow down the Wasted running along the tracks. Weapons like theLaser Gun are great for taking out the Wasted and keeping your Boost meter topped off. Make it a habit to collect these pickups and constantly refill your Boost meter to gain an edge in each event.

Try Out Different Weapons

There are 13 different weapons in Carmageddon: Rogue Shift, and each one plays differently, often requiring a specific build to truly shine.

The Rocket Launcher, for example, deals massive damage from a distance and can hone in on the target, but takes time to lock on. The Laser Gun excels at sustained damage and cutting through hordes of Wasted.

However, wrecking enemy vehicles is harder as you need to stay focused on a single target. The Shotgun can deliver devastating burst damage up close, but quickly loses effectiveness at longer ranges.

Whenever you unlock a new weapon, make it a point to test it out, even if it costs you a run. Understanding how each weapon behaves makes it much easier to plan ahead and build loadouts that dominate later events.

Workshop Upgrades Matter

The Workshop is the most important node in Carmageddon: Rogue Shift, as it allows you to buy temporary upgrades for your Car or Weapons.

Upgrades can range from basic things like adding more Defense or Health to more advanced ones, such as adding more damage to your Weapon for each opponent you wreck, or gaining more Collision damage for missing health.

During the first phase of your run, you can only have up to three total perk slots. You’ll unlock an additional slot for each Section Boss you defeat. Buy upgrades from the Workshop using Credits earned from previous nodes to create your build for the run.

Early on, you’ll have very few Workshop upgrades to work with. However, as you unlock more upgrades in the Black Market, you’ll be able to get perks that complement each other and set up a build that can handle anything the game throws at you. Don’t underestimate these Workshop upgrades.

Don’t be Afraid to Respawn

Carmageddon: Rogue Shift is a chaotic game, and no matter how good your driving is, you’ll sometimes find yourself crashing into a wall, or facing the wrong direction. Your first instinct might be to turn around and use all your Boosts to catch up to the other racers. But even then, you’ll likely be too late, causing you to fail the run.

The Respawn option in the game is designed exactly for situations like this. Press and hold the D-Pad Down button on your controller, or R on your keyboard, to respawn your vehicle and get yourself back on the road. This is much faster than trying to reorient the car yourself. This option has a short cooldown after you use it once, so you still have to be careful with your driving.
