Dimraeth: Ultimate Character Guide

Welcome to Into Indie Games’ Ultimate Character Building Guide for Dimraeth. Dimraeth gives you much greater control over character creation compared to a typical RPG with classes. What is special about Dimraeth? Your character’s identity doesn’t depend only on its class; it depends on the race, class, stats, skill tree, spellbooks, equipment, set bonuses, upgrades, and pets.

Such flexibility also makes the whole process of building a character seem too complex. However, all you need is to learn how each level works. Then you will be able to create a character based on a certain weapon type, spell combination, damage type, or hybrid style of playing without fear of destroying the character.

In this guide, we will consider the whole character creation process step-by-step.

Race and Class Define Your Archetype

Dimraeth currently features three races and three classes, while more races and classes are in development for future updates. In doing so, various archetypes are formed instead of merely altering your character’s looks or providing a small racial bonus. One example would be when the combination of the human race with the magician class is done, and you get an Elemental Ranger which will feature fire and frost magic along with sword and bow skills. Another example would be that of the minotaur race combined with magician class to form an Earthshaker, which includes magic as well as battle axe and earth attacks.

The race also determines your available weapons:

RaceNotable weapon identity
HumanSword and bow
MinotaurBattle axe
ElfTwin daggers

This means that the weapon choice should affect your choice of character. You are not able to choose the human and then change your mind about choosing the battle axe as your main weapon. This is also true about hybrid builds. Human lets you use both sword and bow. Elf has a high speed of attacks and uses two daggers.

Your Race/Class Combination Also Has a Unique Passive

Each combination of races and classes also has a passive which alters how some attributes influence your hero. In case of an agility oriented combination, you may get some extra stamina, while for adventure oriented human shadow there will be extra attack speed. Adventure also adds to physical and magical damage but also to encumbrance and therefore allows carrying more equipment. Each combination thus requires a different approach to attributes. The crucial thing here is that you should pay attention to interactions between your chosen weapon, class, race and attributes which scale your skills, and not consider all these things separately.

On the other hand, you do not need to bother with selecting the theoretically best combination. Early access classes are flexible enough to become physical damage, magic, supportive, damage over time or hybrid classes. Simply select the archetype whose general idea appeals to you.

Understand the Skill Tree Before Spending Your Points

The structure of your skill tree will depend on both your race and class combination.

There are four main directions:

  • North
  • East
  • South
  • West

The horizontal axis is mainly comprised of class skills, while the vertical axis contains racial skills. Their exact composition may differ depending on your archetype, but in general, these directions point you towards different gameplay styles.

Depending on your combination, the different directions may include:

  • Weapon skills
  • Ranged skills
  • Crowd control
  • Physical damage
  • Stealth
  • Bleeding
  • Poison
  • Damage ether
  • Temporal damage
  • Hybrid melee damage
  • Class-specific buffs

For example, while one character may have sword skills to the north and ranged skills to the south, another combination may see something completely different in these directions. The best way to think about it is that the four wings provide you with four different ways of building your character. If you would like to specialize in a specific weapon or damage type, go down the respective branch. If you would like to make a hybrid character, divide your points among several directions.

Major, Medium, and Small Nodes

The skill tree features several types of nodes. Small nodes give you minor passives that boost such stats as piercing damage or stamina regeneration. Along with branches, you will face major nodes. There are about three of them on each wing of the skill tree. These nodes could:

  • Modify your existing skill
  • Unlock a new skill
  • Change completely the behavior of an ability

Next, there are modifiers in the form of sub-branches opened by major nodes. These modifiers can raise base damage, make an ability multishot, decrease cooldown, or otherwise change the way your ability works. Also, there are medium nodes. The give you strong passives and let you develop your skills either in your current play style or in an entirely new one. Before choosing a branch seriously, look at the major nodes in this branch. This gives you a better idea where it goes.

Unique Corner Skills

The biggest differences between the race/class combinations can be found at the ends of the skill tree. The skills that can be found here are special skills that are unique to specific combinations. Some examples of skills found in this category include Phantom, Many Cut, Temporal Rot, and Echo Shade. There are other skills which will have similarities in the different combinations while varying in other aspects. The end skills are one of the most distinctive features of the race/class combination. This gives you another reason to inspect the full tree before committing to a build.

Do Not Treat the Skill Tree as Your Only Source of Abilities

One of the most significant character building systems in Dimraeth is the spell books, which exist outside the skill tree. You can find spell books while exploring the world. Finding one gives you the recipe to craft the specific spell book. When you craft it, you use the spell book from your inventory to unlock the ability into your character forever.

Each trainer handles different types of abilities. The sources say:

  • Tamson for magic abilities
  • Rainer/Rahanner for physical or melee abilities
  • Miral for additional magic abilities

There may be others depending on how the game develops. With such an approach, your race/class combination will not define the build of your character since he/she could have abilities, which are not available in the native skill tree, but are available due to the spell books. Even the bosses can provide you with additional spell opportunities.

Spell Books Have Attribute Requirements

Discovering a spellbook does not automatically mean that you can use the ability. Each spell has unique attribute prerequisites. For instance, there is a Fire Burst spell that has 3 Memory and 3 Intelligence prerequisites. There are other abilities that can have significantly different requirements.

Thus, choosing attributes is essential even if you only plan to focus on damage. Take, for example, the Flaming Strike. This ability has both physical and magic damage and builds burning damage when fully charged. The prerequisites of the ability are:

  • 7 Memory
  • 8 Adventure
  • 7 Energy

If you choose to focus on a different attribute, then you can find the spell, but be unable to use it. Thus, attributes have two functions: enhancing your existing abilities and determining new abilities.

Build Around Synergies, Not Individual Skills

The best possibilities for building your character arise in Dimraeth when systems support each other. For instance, your spell can be used to supplement some unique skills of your class. Your attribute point investment can help you get access to a powerful spell which will greatly boost your damage-over-time abilities. Then, some set bonus can affect the spell while your equipment can also help you play. This Flaming Strike case in point shows how well this works. A Shadow character working with damage-over-time magic suffered greatly as there were no suitable spells available. When he got Flaming Strike and started investing in its required attributes, this spell gave him a much more powerful burning magic boost. But then, some other spells took its place. This is perfectly normal. It means that your build should not stay the same all the time. You may take one skill as long as it solves your problem for now but switch to something else later.

Attributes Are More Than Simple Stat Increases

Experience is spent in order to raise your attributes, rather than just reaching an experience level in order to gain automatic stat bonuses. You may train either by a campfire or by visiting the appropriate trainer in town. Spending experience on one of your attributes will also be counted toward leveling up your character; once the required experience is gained, your character gains a new level and you are given 2 skill points to spend.

In other words, every time you train you gain progress in two systems:

  • First, your attributes improve.
  • Secondly, your experience takes you closer to the next character level and some more skill points.

Inspect What Each Attribute Actually Does

Do not blindly dump every point into your primary damage attribute. The game shows how attributes affect different parts of your character. Examples include:

  • Intelligence: increases magic damage.
  • Physique: increases maximum health and encumbrance.
  • Agility: can provide stamina or other benefits depending on the archetype.
  • Adventure: can improve physical and magical capabilities while increasing carrying capacity.
  • Other attributes can influence requirements for specific spells and abilities.

You can inspect detailed descriptions through the character screen. The advanced information tab provides additional details when you want to understand the exact effects.

Stat Resets Require More Planning

Although the skill tree is possible to respec, the attributes cannot be easily reconfigured. There is another method of resetting your character’s abilities available – Bever can sell you the Elixir of Rebirth for 500 gold when he upgrades his store up to level one in the Sanctuary. Having the ability to respec, you don’t have to worry about each choice. Nevertheless, the attribute distribution should require more thoughtfulness than skill points.

Use the Skill Respec System to Experiment

Skill points are considerably easier to rearrange. The game gives you some free opportunities to move skill points around early on, after which respeccing costs gold. The cost is generally manageable. This makes the skill tree one of the most flexible parts of character development.

You can therefore experiment with:

  • Different damage types
  • Alternative branches
  • Hybrid builds
  • New skills
  • Different skill modifiers
  • Newly discovered spell books

Do not feel obligated to keep every point in the first branch you choose.

Your Gear Completes the Build

Character attributes and skills make up the backbone of your character build, while equipment provides an additional means of customizing your build.

Equipment drops have:

  • Rarity
  • Randomly applied affixes
  • Prefixes
  • Stats
  • Set affiliations (named)

Equipment items belong to sets, and the set bonuses provided by those sets could change the effectiveness of your build dramatically. Some sets would be ideal for tanky fighters, some for range classes, some for spellcasters.

Mix Sets Instead of Automatically Completing One

You do not necessarily need to wear an entire set. You can combine pieces from different sets to activate multiple bonuses. For example, a fire-focused magic character can combine three pieces from one magic-oriented set with three pieces from another. One set might provide mana regeneration while the other improves a particular damage type. This lets you tailor your equipment to your actual build instead of simply equipping whichever set contains the most pieces.

Some Set Bonuses Modify Skills

However, set bonuses are not only statistical.

For instance, some of them include:

  • Additional pierce damage
  • Stamina regeneration
  • Increased movement speed

While others affect certain skills. The set will either increase the power of the skill, alter some of its characteristics or provide a completely new interaction. Erupting Set is an example of a set that interacts with a skill. Specifically, this set interacts with Erupt skill. Normally, this skill works as a knockback skill. When fully charged, Erupt creates water pools that interact with lightning, freezing and other skills.

Learn How Gear Names Work

Item names hold useful information as well. For instance, an item could be named an Enduring Erupting Imbued Charm. Each element of the name signifies something unique about the item.

The first modifier, such as Enduring, defines the primary stat for the item. Enduring is related to stamina, whereas Replenishing refers to stamina regeneration. The value can be rolled at random; however, further upgrading can boost the value along with adding other modifiers. The middle word signifies the set associated with the item. The Erupting modifier in the aforementioned example tells us the set bonus applicable here. Everything else can be rolled during upgrading.

In this way, even two seemingly identical items can have different stats when all is said and done. One item may have the Hasty modifier giving the player spell haste whereas another one has the Sharp modifier granting critical rate. Other modifiers may include armor, resistance, critical multiplier, etc. As these stats are rolled for your items, finding a good upgradeable item becomes an important part of the gear quest.

Upgrade Your Gear Instead of Hoarding Everything

You will get plenty of equipment. Instead of keeping everything, make sure to either recycle excess equipment at the forge or sell it for gold based on what you require. Recycling yields items similar to runes, which are used to enhance your equipment. Enhancement does much more than raise numbers. At specific enhancement levels, equipment gets more stat bonuses. Good equipment not only comes with good stats but also is able to have more of them, therefore having better ceiling potential. One suggestion is to enhance good equipment to +2 because at this stage a piece of equipment gets its first bonus stat. It can then go even further, up to +11. Due to the frequent drop rate of equipment, do not hesitate to recycle and enhance it.

The Forge Turns Loot Into Build Progression

The forge creates a useful loop:

Explore → collect gear → identify useful pieces → salvage unwanted equipment → obtain upgrade materials → improve your chosen gear → replace it when better pieces appear.

This becomes particularly important because you have 12 equipment slots to manage.

You will constantly balance:

  • Set bonuses
  • Individual stats
  • Upgrade potential
  • Gear quality
  • Attribute requirements
  • Skill synergies

A theoretically stronger individual item is not always the best choice if replacing it breaks an important set combination.

Use the Codex Whenever You Get Confused

Dimraeth offers a comprehensive Codex which could help answer many questions you will definitely have when developing your character. You could search terms such as abilities, buffs, equipment sets and other mechanisms.

For equipment sets, the Codex could provide information like:

  • The bonus for the set
  • Which enemies/environments give the set
  • The items in the set
  • The total number of items in the set
  • Your information on the item

Codex automatically fills up as you come across new things in the game, giving you a scavenger hunt component of the exploration process. If you find a mechanism or term which you are unfamiliar with, look up the Codex first before making an assumption.

Boss Bounties Are Part of the Gear Progression Loop

Once you defeat a boss, that encounter becomes available as a repeatable bounty through the guild hall’s bounty board. Bounties have a number of functions.

You can:

  • Conquer bosses
  • Farming for certain equipment set
  • Finding rare or encounter exclusive equipment
  • Collecting materials for certain skill recipes
  • Boosting the bounty difficulty
  • Getting increasingly better loot

Equipment bonuses of boss-related sets could be especially useful as there are bonuses to equipment that relate to particular battles only. There are tiers in the bounty system and completing the bounty on the maximum difficulty makes you unlock a new tier with an increasing difficulty and reward quality. It allows targeting equipment with certainty.

Pets Are Part of Character Utility

Pets are not just there for aesthetic purposes. You will be able to find pets in various regions in the game, and get them from the pet shop, which is unlocked fairly early on. Each pet adds some kind of utility to the inventory. You are able to move any item to the pet’s inventory and keep them there for as long as you would like.

The pet can also be sent to:

  • Sell your stored items
  • Move your items to the storage chests at your base

Also, each pet has a gameplay utility. For instance, the Carryon Parrot is able to do a dive attack on the enemy if he sees that you have applied bleeding on him, adding more bleed stacks. Moon Cat is able to give you a boost of mana regeneration periodically, making him perfect for spellcasters.

There are lots of pets to choose from and each has a different utility.

Manage Your Consumables Aggressively

Charged consumable items function like soulslike healing items. They are not permanent items that get depleted after using once.

When you take rest at campfire, your charges get refilled. Resting also:

  • Heals you fully
  • Respawns enemies

Since charges refill automatically, there isn’t much point to keep saving consumables. Use them where and when you have an upper hand. Upgrade Your Health Flask Early. Gather as many Tender Berries as possible in the early part of the game. These can be found in the forest and can also be planted in Sanctum if you manage to get the seed. Upgrading the starter health flask is easy because there are no requirements for upgrade, hence reaching seven charges is very simple. Your starter flask will be upgraded into another flask later, but getting maximum charges early can help a lot.

Manage Your Sanctum and Inventory

Managing inventory will be much simpler once you develop a pattern. You will be able to create storage chests in the Sanctum using the furniture tab. You should do that before your inventory gets filled up with unnecessary materials like wood and stone.

A good pattern is as follows:

  • Return to the Sanctum.
  • Store unnecessary materials and equipment.
  • Scavenge unnecessary equipment.
  • Upgrade useful equipment.
  • Take rest when necessary.
  • Teleport back to your location.

There will be no expense or drawback from teleportation, so you should do that as much as you want. It is obvious that the game wants you to travel between the world, Sanctum, forge, storage, and other places.

Use Quests to Accelerate Progression

Experience is gained from various sources. Regular enemies are always a constant source while grinding and exploring. Quests are more of a burst source of experience. Be sure to look out for dynamic events when exploring. These are always prominently announced by the game and last for 15 minutes of real time. It is noteworthy that sleeping during the night will not reset the active dynamic event. There is also the quest board in the guild hall offering repeatable tasks. Quests such as scouting can be quite handy since they require moving through territories that you are going to move through anyway.

After defeating a boss, you unlock their bounty. This means that besides gaining experience and rewards, it allows farming equipment specific to these bosses. Since there are certain sets of equipment and recipes which are tied to the bosses, bounties might be an essential feature in endgame character progression.

Build Around Your Intended Playstyle

Because the skill tree, attributes, spells, and equipment all interact, you should think about your character as a complete build rather than treating each system independently.

For example:

Weapon-focused build

Prioritize:

  • Your race’s compatible weapon
  • Relevant weapon skills
  • Damage-oriented attributes
  • Equipment that strengthens your preferred attacks
  • Set bonuses that complement your weapon

Ranged build

Prioritize:

  • A race with access to the weapon you want
  • Ranged skill-tree progression
  • Appropriate attributes
  • Equipment supporting mobility or ranged damage
  • Skills that complement your preferred distance

Spellcaster

Prioritize:

  • Attributes required by your desired spells
  • Spell-oriented passives
  • Concentration management
  • Spell Haste and related equipment statistics
  • Set bonuses that interact with your preferred spells

Hybrid build

Combine branches rather than abandoning one completely.

The game’s flexible skill tree and world-found spells allow you to mix abilities that don’t necessarily appear together in your starting archetype.

Dimraeth’s character system is built around flexibility and experimentation, not finding a perfect build from the start. Your gear, spells, skill tree, sets, and even pets will continue to change as you progress, while early access will add more races and classes.

Your race and class define your core archetype, while attributes determine scaling and spell requirements. The skill tree provides specialization, spell books expand your options, and equipment sets, upgrades, and random stats create further synergies. Pets add utility and combat effects, while the Codex, training dummy, respec system, and teleportation make experimentation easier.

Rather than following a fixed meta build, build around the abilities and equipment you discover. If something does not work, change it. Respec your skills, try new spells, hunt for better gear, or shift your character in a completely different direction.

The key is to experiment and let your character evolve as you play.
