You play as Cel, a combat technician, exploring a sprawling derelict facility with her crew. As you slowly progress through each zone, you uncover the mystery of what happened to the world around you and why the zone is infested with monsters.
The early few hours of the game can be extremely punishing as you face horrors behind every locked door and in dark corners. Here are seven handy tips and tricks to make the journey easier.

Learn to Read the Map

The Map is your greatest Asset in End of Abyss. The derelict sector is massive, and it’s very easy to get lost and go around in circles when you’re moving toward your next objective. Since the world has a lot of verticality to it, it can also be difficult to track your movements and location on the map at all times.
Fortunately, plenty of map markers are added automatically as you progress through the different sectors. Access points such as Ladders and Vents are marked clearly on the map, which lets you see how the different areas and rooms are connected to each other. The doors that you’ve unlocked are highlighted in blue while paths that you’ve yet to unlock are marked in red.
Make it a habit to check the Map after every few rooms to have a clear understanding of the zone layout.
Frequently Use the Scanner

The Scanner is another important tool that you’ll want to use as much as possible on your playthrough. It unlocks right at the start and allows you to scan the environment for additional information. For example, you can scan a keycard reader on a locked door to see which keycard you’ll need to progress.
You can also scan the monsters to learn more about them and their weaknesses. The latter information can be very helpful as you progress further along the story. You can also read notes left behind by scanning them to learn more about the world around you. Finally, you can use the Scanner to spot Weak Structure or similar environmental obstacles to learn how you can get past them.
A good rule of thumb is to do a quick scan of the room with the Scanner before you move on.
Don’t Hoard Fragments

Resources are hard to come by, at least in the early hours of End of Abyss. So naturally, you may be inclined to save your Fragments for a big weapon upgrade instead of using them to refill your ammo or craft consumables. While this may be fine, especially when you’re backtracking through the zones, it’s not a good idea when you’re exploring unknown parts of the map.
You never know which room contains hordes of enemies, forcing you to unload your entire stock of Riot Breaker ammunition or use multiple Grenades just to survive. But having them in your inventory means you’ll be prepared for anything. Later on, you’ll also come across environmental obstacles that require using specific items like Explosive Charges or Incinerator to clear a hidden path.
Besides, your weapon upgrades will always require an additional upgrade material on top of Fragments. So unless you’re fully ready to upgrade the weapon, there’s no point in holding on to the Fragments.
Upgrade the Pulse Gun First

The Pulse Gun is the quick-firing handgun that you start with in End of Abyss. While its damage output is nothing to write home about, it’s the only weapon in the game that has infinite ammo. It also has a decent rate of fire and reload speed, which makes it a capable firearm throughout the game.
While weapons such as the Riot Breaker or Incinerator have their specific use and can give you an edge against certain enemies and bosses, the usefulness of the Pulse Gun is unparalleled. So I strongly suggest sinking the early few upgrade materials you find into the Pulse Gun to give it a damage boost. You’ll be able to use the weapon for exploration while saving the ammo for your other weapons for boss fights.
Even if you don’t want to invest too heavily in the Pulse Gun, unlocking the Charged Shot upgrade for it should always be a priority.
Know Enemy Weaknesses

You’ll face a variety of monsters as you travel the dark and empty halls of the derelict facility. The Infected Workers, Husks, and Parasitic Fleas that you encounter early on don’t really care much about which weapon you use on them. They are pretty weak and should go down in a couple of shots regardless of the firearm.
However, as you progress deeper into the facility, the variety of monsters will increase, and so will their resistances. Some enemies will be weak to Fire while others might be more susceptible to High Impact or EMP. By scanning the enemy, you can learn of their weaknesses. Always try to use the weapon that matches their weakness to make the fights go in your favor.
Don’t Get Cornered

Early on, End of Abyss will put you up against only a few monsters at a time. Since they aren’t as fast, you can take them out pretty easily before they get close. This, however, changes when you progress further into the story. Eventually, you’ll reach areas where the monsters will come in from every direction, driving you into a corner.
But as you might expect, this is a bad position to be in no matter how many monsters you’re facing. Always keep your exit open by luring the monsters away from the door. You can always use Sprint Dodge to get some distance between you and the enemies. And if things turn difficult, run out of the room and force the monsters to follow you through the narrow door. This strategy saved me countless times in my playthrough.
Backtracking and Exploration Are Rewarding

End of Abyss offers a tight and focused experience driven by a strong narrative, but at its core, it’s still a Metroidvania. And like any good Metroidvania, exploration and backtracking through previously cleared areas are extremely rewarding in the game. You’ll find hidden containers that give you upgrade materials, large chunks of fragments, unique enemy encounters, or sometimes even new and powerful weapons.
Along the way, you’ll also uncover interesting lore bits that add more flavor to the dreaded world around you. If you come across a path that you can’t access, place a marker on your map so that you can come back to it later. There are many hidden secrets just waiting to be discovered in the game. And you don’t want to miss out on them.
