Escape From Tarkov – How A Raid Works

Escape From Tarkov, after being in beta for years, has finally been fully released. Many were waiting for its Steam version, and while it is not in perfect condition, it has attracted big numbers. If you wish to learn more about the game, you can head over to its Steam page.

If you are new to this title, there are tons of things you will not understand, and that is alright. One of the main things you need to understand in Escape From Tarkov is how a raid works. You will be conducting many raids in the game, so I will provide you with a guide on how they work.

How A Raid Works In Escape From Tarkov

Before you start a raid, you will have to choose your preferred gear. Then enter the raid, and the first things you need to do are exploration and completing your tasks. Quests in levels 1 to 10 are mostly regarding the Therapist, and they will not be too difficult, once you learn some basics, of course.

Now, as you complete your tasks and explore, you need to find valuable loot. Loot in this game can be found in different places, so you need to memorize the map. You can do that either in the practice mode or by playing as a Scav. Your main goals are to survive, gather as much valuable loot as possible, and then extract.

Before you begin your journey, it is important that you mark a couple of extraction points so you know where to go. Blindly traveling can lead to confusion, and it can be a game over for you. Also, if you are new, then I would highly recommend avoiding engaging with PMCs and bosses. You can fight the Scavs only if you are not playing as a Scav. You can attack them as a Scav, but if you do not, they will be friendly toward you.

What Happens If You Die In A Raid

Dying in a raid is simpler and common than you would think. You can easily get killed, especially if you cannot spot the enemy before they spot you. That is why decision-making and awareness are extremely important in this game.

If you die during a raid, then of course, it is game over, but there are some consequences. If you were playing as a Scav, then it is fine; you will not lose anything, as the gear that was assigned to you was not yours. You are given a random gear if you play as a Scav, so even if you lose it, you will get more in the next run.

That said, if you play as a PMC, which will be your main character, you will lose all of your gear if you die. Other PMCs can kill you and loot your items, and carry on. This is the biggest threat in Escape From Tarkov, so you need to be very careful.

That is why, if you are a beginner, I highly recommend playing as a Scav until you master the fundamentals.

Tips On How To Conduct A Proper Raid

The following are some of my tips that can help you conduct a proper raid:

  • As soon as you start a raid, press O twice and check the extractions.
  • Mark a couple of extraction points before you move forward.
  • While exploring, look out for signs like green smoke or a campfire. These signs indicate active extracts.
  • Do not rush into the open, as there will be other PMCs if you are playing in the online mode.
  • Be patient, as this game rewards a patient player.
  • If you try to rush, you are most likely to end up dying.
  • Learn the routes and complete your tasks so you can increase the levels quickly.
  • If you are a beginner who knows nothing about this game, then play in the offline mode. You are not ready for the online mode, so in the practice mode, study the maps and learn the routes. This way, you will know the way in the real raids and you will not waste your resources.

While the tips mentioned above are enough for you to have a successful raid, you can check out my beginner’s tips and tricks guide for the best experience possible.

That is pretty much it for my guide explaining how a raid works in Escape From Tarkov.
