This beginner’s tips and tricks guide for Expeditions: Samurai is based on our own playthrough. These are the tips we wish we had known when starting the game, as they would have made our overall experience even better. You may not find every tip equally helpful, and you might discover other strategies that work better for your own playstyle. That is perfectly alright, as every player approaches the game differently, and finding what works best for you is part of the experience.

Start With The Lowest Or Medium Difficulty

As you start the game, you will get the option of choosing the difficulty setting. There are going to be four difficulty options. The two on the left side are going to be the ones you need to focus on, as the ones on the right can be really harsh.
So, as you will be playing this game for the first time and it is currently in Early Access, it is better if you start with the easier options. Play the game once on the easier difficulty setting, and once you have learned the mechanics and how the game works, it will become much easier for you to play it on the higher difficulties.
It will not be easy per se, but as you have already experienced the mechanics firsthand, the overall experience is going to be much better. So, make sure to play the game on the normal difficulty setting first.
Think Before Making A Choice

This may seem like one of the simpler tips in Expeditions: Samurai that you may not think much about. However, it is very important. So far, in Early Access, there do not seem to be that many major choices you have to make, but it is still important to get familiar with the decision-making mechanics.
In the very first quest, you will have to make an important decision about saving one person between two choices. So, the game does give you difficult choices every now and then, and you need to be careful with them. You also need to make sure you do not upset your crew members.
After some important decisions, you will see that the crew members approve or disapprove of your decision. While, of course, you cannot make everyone happy, it is better if you try to earn the approval of most of them.
Persuasion And Manipulation Are The Most Important Skills

For now, in Early Access, we think Persuasion and Manipulation are the most important skills, and you need to invest more points into them. Having seven points in each is going to help you a lot. Make sure you do that for your main character only because that is going to be the only character who can talk to the NPCs.
Invest more in your other skills, such as Athletics and similar abilities, as they can help in other situations. So, in cases where your main character does not have enough points in a skill to lockpick something, your other characters can come in clutch.
Now, regarding why Persuasion and Manipulation are important, we have noticed that they are the skills most commonly used during conversations. For example, as you start the second quest in the game, you will have to find food for your people.
You will have to either hunt for it or buy it with money. However, if you have seven points in Persuasion, you will be able to get the food for free. Also, note that you should add points into Persuasion first and then Manipulation.
You Can Win Fights Without Taking Damage

Now, you can win fights in this game without taking any damage. You just need to make sure that you do not move your character away while they are within an enemy’s range. If you move your character while they are standing directly in front of an enemy, that is a guaranteed hit.
You still may not take health damage because of your armor, but if you want to finish a fight without taking even a single hit, keeping that in mind is very important. Other than that, you need to make sure your positioning is correct. Positioning your ranged attackers in the open is not a bad idea because they need a clear line of sight to see their target and shoot it.
Also, make sure to have at least two ranged attackers on your team. Even having your entire team equipped with ranged weapons is going to work even better. However, if you want to use melee weapons, that is completely fine too.
Another thing you need to note is that you should not chase after enemies who panic or become disobedient. Do follow them, but keep enough distance so that if they come toward you, they will have already used all of their action points. If you chase them too closely, they will simply turn back and hit you, so it is much better to let them come toward you instead.
Don’t Forget To Update Your Loadout

This is one of the main tips in Expeditions: Samurai, as updating your loadout is important. As you defeat enemies or explore the area, you will get more armor, weapons, and other items. You should use the items you get, as they can help you a lot.
Having better armor and a stronger weapon can completely change the outcome of combat. If you have a better weapon, you may be able to one-shot some of the enemies you may not have been able to defeat that way before. Even increasing your damage by just a few points is going to make a big difference, so make sure to compare the weapons you find.
Other than that, you can also select a secondary weapon. They help a lot too, and if your primary weapon is a close-range melee weapon, then your secondary should be a long-range one.
Don’t Sleep On Ranged Weapons

Now, ranged weapons in this game are the key to victory almost every single time. Or at least they are the ones we used to achieve victory much more easily. We used all types of weapons and almost every single one we could find, but the ranged weapons take the crown for being the best.
They ignore armor and go straight through the enemy’s health bar, which is a huge advantage. With normal melee weapons like the katana, you cannot do that. First, you have to break the armor and then damage the enemy. So, this would usually take turns from two of your characters just to finish off one enemy.
However, when it comes to ranged weapons, you can often do that with just one character. That is pretty powerful. Also, if you are in enemy territory and they are not aggroed yet, you can easily take out a lot of them using a ranged character.
We used Kage to defeat many enemies before the fight even began. That said, there are going to be some enemies you will not be able to one-shot, so do keep that in mind.
Exploration Is Important

In this game, exploration is important because you can find many useful items around every area. So, make sure whenever you are exploring enemy territory or a village, you have at least one character with a high Burglary skill so they can open chests for you.
Some of the chests have medium difficulty, so you will need seven points in the skill to open them. So, whenever you are in a new area, make sure to explore it thoroughly before moving on. The same goes for enemy territory.
If you want to explore everything thoroughly, then defeating the enemies is going to be the right option. Defeat the enemies first and then explore everything afterward. This way, you will be able to find many more useful items. Also, whenever you defeat an enemy, make sure to loot their body, as that way you can find some useful items too.
With that, the tips and tricks guide for beginners in Expeditions: Samurai comes to an end. Hopefully, this guide helps you throughout your journey and makes your overall experience even better.
