2025 has been a great year for indie lovers, with hits like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and the long-awaited platform-breaking release of Hollow Knight: Silksong. For fans of the cult-classic Black & White, Fata Deum brings back the long-lost thrill of the god-sim genre.
Developed by 42 Bits Entertainment, the game has just launched in Early Access. While a full campaign isn’t in place yet, its free-form structure and quest system to drive progression already offers plenty of depth and hours of playtime. That said, the early game can feel overwhelming with a bunch of mechanics to learn and master.Â
With that in mind, here are some essential tips to help you find your divine footing in Fata Deum.Â

You’re a God, But Not All-Powerful

When Fata Deum begins, you’re not a towering omnipotent force. You’re a fledgling deity with only a few followers and limited reach. Your power grows as you gain more followers and spread your influence across more settlements, which in turn unlocks new skills and abilities. These abilities give you new ways to manipulate mortals, migrate resources, and spread your influence even further.Â

The beauty of the game is that you’re not forced into a single playstyle. You can choose to play as a benevolent god, answering prayers and nurturing your people with kindness, or embrace the darker path by ruling with fear and sacrifice. Experimenting with different playstyles keeps the experience fresh, and it’s worth trying both extremes to see which divine persona suits you best.
Answer or Reject PrayersÂ

A core feature of Fata Deum is the prayer system. Your followers will regularly reach out, asking for blessings, inspiration, protection, or sometimes more complex requests like bolstering military strength or expanding their families.
When you click on a praying follower, you’ll see a thumbs-up or thumbs-down option. Accepting a prayer adds it to your objective sidebar, along with a deadline for fulfilling it. If you accept a prayer and fulfill it, it strengthens your worshippers’ belief, boosting their faith and loyalty.
However, taking on a prayer you can’t complete in time can damage trust. That’s why sometimes the best choice is simply to reject a prayer. Think of prayers as a form of risk–reward management. If you’re confident you can pull it off, go for it. If not, leave it aside and focus on the objectives you can realistically achieve.
Your Settlements Aren’t Allies

In many strategy games, two settlements under your banner are natural allies. But the same is not true in Fata Deum. Just because two villages worship you doesn’t mean they’ll get along with one another.
This makes expanding your settlements a bit more interesting. As you increase your divine influence and find yourself lacking in resources, you can order a settlement to loot another one, even if both are under your control. Or you can simply use your settlement with a strong military to outright attack one under a rival god’s control to cripple their economy.
Focus on One or Two Settlements First

In Fata Deum, you start on a map that already has multiple settlements for you to claim and expand. You can also create new settlements once you unlock the right perks. However, trying to grab too many right from the start can quickly complicate things.
At the beginning of your run, it’s better to focus on one or two settlements and push their efficiency as much as possible. You also don’t want every settlement doing the same thing. Instead, spread out their specialization and use the Send Resources feature to manage supplies efficiently across all your settlements.
Use Nighttime to Expand and Plan

Fata Deum has an active day-and-night cycle. During the day, you actively interact with followers, respond to prayers, move them around, and pretty much do anything you want. At night, however, your mortals rest, and you can’t influence them directly.
Early in the game, nighttime feels quiet… almost like downtime. But as you unlock new abilities, the night shifts into more of a planning phase. This is when you can lay down blueprints for buildings and set the stage for the coming day. Want to loot a settlement? You need to plan for it at night.

Click on your settlement’s Town Center to see what options you have available and experiment with them to see how they work.
Check the Map for Points of Interest

The map in Fata Deum is huge, with plenty of secrets scattered across it. While most don’t serve much purpose yet in Early Access, it’s still worth tracking their locations. Some Points of Interest will reward you with free skill points, which can be spent to increase your godly influence.

You should also keep an eye out for Ancient Relics. If you preserve them, you gain a moderate amount of mana and an additional follower in the closest settlement. You can also choose to Extinct an Ancient Relic to gain the most amount of mana from it. This is useful if you’re running critically low on mana.Â
On top of that, make note of resource nodes like coal, gold, and iron so you’re ready to mine them when your settlements need them.
Looting a Settlement

In Fata Deum, if you’ve built up a settlement with solid military strength but are running low on resources, looting a neighboring settlement can be a smart move. This command can only be issued at night, and if the raid is successful, your followers will return with supplies. On top of that, looting also gives you a boost in faith, making it a good strategy to use when you need both resources and influence.
Sacrifice Rival Gods’ Followers

Your divine power in Fata Deum isn’t limited to guiding your own followers. You can also unleash One Shot Wonders on rival gods’ settlements to either sway their people toward you or cripple their economy.
Using positive wonders in an enemy settlement can gradually shift followers to your side, while negative wonders can stall their growth and give you the upper hand. You’ll also notice rival gods trying to influence your own settlements. When that happens, you can use the Godly Fist to sacrifice any converted followers and cut off their influence before it spreads further.
Influence the World Directly

As a god, you can directly affect the world around you, and the Godly Fist is the most basic form of influence available from the start. Not only does it let you convert followers, but you can also use it to collect gold, iron, or stone from their respective deposits.
As you expand a settlement, these resources become essential for building and growth. You can also hold left-click on a follower or any resource on the map to pick it up and move it around. Use this to send people to specific tasks or shift resources between settlements quickly and efficiently.
Focus on Quests to Progress

Since Fata Deum doesn’t have a full campaign yet, it’s easy to get lost in the sandbox. That’s where quests and challenges come in. The game offers Fate’s Challenges and Path to Victory objectives that act as milestones to guide you on your journey.
These goals can range from increasing your military power, gaining enough followers, or even preserving a specific number of Ancient Relics. If you don’t know what to do next, focus on objectives for a while. The rewards you get for completing them are excellent.

Fata Deum is still in Early Access, and naturally, more content will be added as development continues. For now, it already offers a solid sandbox experience where you can experiment and see just how far your influence can spread. The tips and tricks above will give you a strong start, but don’t be afraid to experiment with different systems and playstyles to discover what kind of god you want to become.
