Don’t Take Fights You Can’t Win
The first lesson this game teaches you is that the character you’re playing is a nobody at the beginning. You can’t fight most beasts, let alone the people who have been in the harsh environment of the Colony for longer than you.
For most of the early game, you’ll have to avoid fights at all costs. You can beat small enemies, such as the Scavengers, Goblins, and the Molerats, but anything more powerful will require you to level up first.
When you finally get to the Old Camp, you’ll find NPCs that can escort you to the New Camp or the Swamp Camp. Use their help to travel between the camps and avoid any battles otherwise.
It’s also recommended to pay for the protection money if any warden asks you for it, because getting on their bad side will result in things getting even more difficult for you down the road.
Leveling Up Is Different; Use Your LP Wisely
As you level up, you’ll obtain LP. You can consume these LP to learn skills. These skills can be incredibly varied in this game.
You can learn about hunting from hunters or some combat abilities from fighters. Fingers in the Old Camp can teach you how to pickpocket and improve your lockpicking skills. You can also learn magic from Torrez in the Old Camp.
Additionally, if you want to equip better weapons, you’ll need Strength or Dexterity for it. You can increase your Strength or Dexterity in exchange for LP from Diego in the Old Camp.
Some valuable skills require Ore Nuggets alongside LP, so you’ll need both of them to master those skills.
Don’t Sell All The Stuff To The Same Merchant
As you play through the game, you’ll find NPCs that are willing to trade with you. You can sell your stuff to them for Ore Nuggets, which is the currency inside the Colony.
You can mine Ore Nuggets from the mine using a pickaxe, but most of them will be gained by selling stuff and completing quests.
Now, if you go to sell something to a fencer, you shouldn’t sell multiple units of the same item to the same fencer, as each increment will decrease the purchase value.
Suppose you have 5 pieces of Grilled Meat, where each costs 4 Nuggets. If you sell 3 Nuggets to the same fencer, he’ll buy each for much less than the base price of 4 Nuggets, so you should only sell them 1 unit and sell the rest to some other fencers. Furthermore, note that some fencers might offer a better price for certain items.
Cook The Food And Sleep In Bed For Better Healing
Many beasts that you encounter on your journey early on can be harvested for raw meat. You can also obtain some recipes through quests and exploration.
It’s best to cook the meat before selling or consuming it to increase its value for trading. Furthermore, since the enemies can deal you a lot of damage early on, you’ll need as much healing as possible.
You can buy most of the cooking ingredients from Dexter in the Old Camp if you already have the recipes. Additionally, if you talk to Guy near the Arena, he’ll tell you about an empty hut.
Go to the hut near the arena with the Red Awning. Its current owner passed away, so you can claim it as your own and sleep in the bed. Sleeping in the bed can also heal your HP, which saves you from using the healing items. Note that sleeping may not fully restore your entire HP bar, so you should just wait and sleep again after a while.
Get A Map ASAP
The game doesn’t give you a map from the beginning. You don’t even have a compass to point you in the right direction. However, you can purchase the map with a few Ore Nuggets.
Once you reach the Old Camp, look for the NPC called Graham. He’s near the north gate. You can buy the map of the entire Colony from him, as well as some maps for specific locations.
The map can be accessed by opening your inventory and navigating to the documents tab. Once you read the map, it will show you your location on it.
You can also place custom markers on it, and it makes the game a lot easier to play. However, Graham doesn’t sell the map any cheaper, so you’ll have to sell some stuff to get the ore as soon as possible.
