Moss Mother is the first main boss of Hollow Knight: Silksong, standing guard at the end of Moss Grotto. She serves primarily as the tutorial boss, helping players learn the ropes of Hornet’s movements and attacks. But she can still pose a significant challenge to those unprepared, especially since Hornet doesn’t have any of her special tools and abilities yet.
In this guide, we’ll break down Moss Mother’s location, moveset, strategies, and the rewards you’ll get for defeating her.

Moss Mother Location

From the first Bench in Moss Grotto, head to the upper level. Break the vines on the left-side passage to enter the Moss Mother’s boss arena.
Moss Mother Moveset

Moss Mother has a relatively simple and straightforward moveset. She cycles between three attacks.
Dive Attack
Moss Mother dives down and charges forward along the ground with her stinger.

Falling Rocks
She slams the top of the arena, causing three rocks to fall. Getting hit will deal damage.

Summon Larvae
She bashes the top of the arena, summoning 1 to 3 larvae enemies to join the fight.

Other than that, she is a flying enemy and will slowly glide across the arena. So jumping around recklessly and bumping into her will cause you to take damage.
Moss Mother Strategies

As the tutorial boss, Moss Mother isn’t too difficult. She leaves plenty of openings for attacks and also has a relatively low health pool.

When she performs her Dive Attack, jump and pogo on top of her. You can control your movement to land close to her to get in another few free attacks as she recovers from this attack.
Her Falling Rocks attack is simple enough to avoid. She always drops three rocks, and you can predict their locations by watching for dust falling from the ceiling. Stay clear of those spots to avoid taking unnecessary hits.

When she summons larvae, it’s best to take them out quickly. They’re weak but can limit your safe space in the arena if left untouched.

After taking several hits, Moss Mother will eventually get stunned, giving you a free chance to attack. If your health is low, use this opportunity to Bind and regain any lost health. As long as you manage your health and keep up the aggression while dodging her three attacks, she should go down easily.
Rewards for Beating Moss Mother

Defeating Moss Mother grants you access to Bone Bottoms, the first main hub region of the game. Since this is a required boss, you must defeat her in order to progress further into Hollow Knight: Silksong.
