Hollow Knight: Silksong – How To Parry

Hollow Knight: Silksong has become one of the flagship titles in the Metroidvania genre and for good reason. The game’s combat may look straightforward at first glance, but it has so much depth to it, just like the rest of the game. If you need help with any of that, you should check out our main hub for all the guides and walkthroughs.

If you’re a new player who has yet to play the prequel, you might be wondering if there’s a parry mechanic in the game, and if there is, how do you do it?

Now, unlike most of Hornet’s abilities, you don’t have to unlock the parry mechanic, as it’s there from the start. However, you’ll have to progress a little before you encounter enemies that can be parried.

You can parry an enemy’s attack by timing your normal attack the moment the enemy’s attack connects with you. This will allow you to negate the damage completely. Parrying an attack can be exceptionally effective if you have yet to acquire the Swift Dash skill, and avoiding the enemy’s attack using a jump is not possible due to the terrain.

Furthermore, you can also parry an enemy’s range projectile attack, which will cause it to be deflected away from you. In certain cases, such as explosive rocks, parrying the ranged projectile may also allow you to damage the enemy.

Keep in mind that you can also parry an enemy’s attack while jumping. But only weapon and projectile attacks can be parried. Attacks, such as a body slam or where the enemy simply charges at you, can’t be parried. You’ll have to rely on the Swift Dash or jump out of the way to avoid these attacks.

How To Parry Effectively In Hollow Knight: Silksong

Parrying is all about timing, and if you’re trying to parry on reaction, you’ll most likely fail. Attacks are incredibly fast in Hollow Knight: Silksong. In order to parry effectively, you have to observe the enemy that you’re fighting against.

Most enemies have visual cues right before they begin their attack, such as the spear-wielding bugs in the Bone Marrow area. These bugs will approach you, stop for a moment, and then make a unique sound before thrusting their spear forward.

If you’re prepared for the attack before it comes out and try to match the timing, you’ll be able to deflect and parry it easily, negating all damage.

That said, parrying is risky, and simply avoiding the attack altogether through movement is a better option in most cases. But knowing that parrying is also a defensive option available to you can make most battles quite easy, especially in narrow spaces where dodging and jumping around isn’t the best course of action.
