Discover everything you need to know about the magic in this Hytale guide, including how to unlock spells and use magic.
Magic in Hytale is item-based, not learned via a spell skill tree. You use magic by equipping magical staves/totems and attacking with them. The magic system is growing, but core casting via staffs and totems is currently the main functional magic mechanic. Learn how to unlock and use magic during combat.

How To Unlock Magic
Hytale lacks a traditional system where you unlock individual spells from a skill tree or magic menu in Early Access. However, the magic is tied to items and gear like staves, totems, and grimoires. You don’t unlock spells by leveling a magic tree. You gain access to magical effects by acquiring or crafting magic items that have those spells.
Enter the Forgotten Temple

Make sure to unlock the game’s magic progression system before crafting any magic system. Open the map and find the location of the Forgotten Temple Gateway. Move to the lower chamber and defeat the golem standing near the portal.
Pass through the portal and move to the center of the area to interact with the Heart of Orbis statue. Doing so allows you to unlock the Memories system that further unlocks access to magical crafting.
Craft Magic Items

The Arcanist’s Workbench is the core crafting station for magic in Hytale. The materials required to craft the Arcanist’s Workbench are 10xThorium Ingot, 30x Linen Scraps, and 20xEssence of Void. Thorium Ingot is obtained by mining the ores on the side of the cliff in Desert Biomes. After that, the Thorium Ores are smelted in the Furnace to obtain Thorium Ingot.
Essence of Void is obtained by killing the void creatures at night. Once you obtain the required materials, interact with the workbench tier 2 to craft the Arcanist’s Workbench. Once you have the Arcanist’s Workbench, you can craft items that function as spells when used.
All Magic Weapons

Hytale offers four different magic weapons, and each one serves its own unique purpose. Crafting them can be challenging because rare materials are required. Below are all the magic weapons and the required materials to craft them.
| Weapon | Materials Required |
| Healing Totem | 50x Essence of Life 20x Thorium Ingot 10x Greater Health Potion |
| Slowing Totem | 30x Essence of Ice 10x Cobalt Ingot 40x Ice |
| Flame Crystal Staff | 1x Ruby 8x Silver Ingot 8x Gold Ingot 20x Essence of Fire |
| Ice Crystal Staff | 1x Sapphire 8x Silver Ingot 10x Azure Log 20x Essence of Ice |
Flame Crystal Staff casts fireball/fiery attacks, allowing you to deal fire‑type spell damage. Ice Crystal Staff can cast ice/frostbolt spells and can deal ice damage. Use the Healing Totem to trigger the healing spell effect in an area.
Slowing Totem applies a slow effect, helping you to control the enemies in combat. Instead of individually unlocking spells, you use weapons or items that contain spells. While the Ice Crystal Staff uses Essence of Ice as ammo, the Essence of Fire is used in the Flame Crystal Staff.
How To Use Magic

Magic items like staffs or totems gain spell effects simply by crafting and equipping them. Equip a staff or totem you’ve crafted and use the standard attack controls to cast the magical effect. Magic currently doesn’t use a fully implemented mana system. Using the attack buttons allows the staff to cast its effect. Fireballs from a fire staff or frost projectiles from an ice staff.
You can also find magic items in loot chests or dungeons if you prefer not to craft them. Magic in Hytale uses the mana bar visible on screen when casting. This is much like stamina, but for magical attacks. Some magic weapons additionally require element essences in your inventory to fire their spells.
Mana Potions from the Alchemist’s Workbench or found in dungeons help restore mana, allowing you to keep casting spells in combat.
Casting Magic

Once you’ve equipped a magic item, select the staff or totem in your hotbar. Press the LMB or RMB to trigger its magical attack or effect. Make sure to keep watching your MP bar because if it runs out, your spellcasting will pause until you refill mana. Make sure to have essence in your inventory to keep using the Crystal Staff.
Some spellbooks or advanced magical items exist in the game, but may not fully function in Early Access. The spellbooks use charges rather than stamina, essence, or mana. The Demon, Air, and Flame Spellbook, the Brown and Purple Grimoire, also have the smaller attack animation.
Defeating the skeleton mages and other high-level enemies also allows you to gain magic drops. However, these enemies can also cast spells while fighting you in combat. It’s best to carry different staves in your hotbar and switch between them to cast multiple elements.
