What is the Essence of Life
Essence of Life in Hytale is an in‑game resource that looks like a glowing green orb. It basically shows life energy found around plants, animals, and living things in the world. This ingredient is not a rare key item or high‑tier crafting material for weapons or armor.
You can use it as a currency for specific trading with NPCs in special hubs. The Essence of Life also serves as an ingredient for farming tools at the Farmer’s Workbench. You can craft the Feed Bag and Capture Crate using the Essence of Life to control or transport the animals.
It’s worth mentioning that 100 Essence of Life can be crafted into a Greater Essence of Life at Farmer’s Workshop, which is used for advanced recipes.
Locations to Find Essence of Life
Essence of Life can be obtained by harvesting the plants and crops while exploring the world. Wild wheat fields in open plains or grassland biomes are one of the easiest and fastest ways to gather this currency or ingredient.
Breaking mature crops like wheat gives you multiple units, so make sure to find them. Other wild plants, flowers, and crops like carrots and potatoes also drop Essence of Life when harvested. The objective for you here is to focus on areas rich with wild crops, allowing you to pick up large amounts.
Chopping down trees, bushes, and foliage using the pickaxe or hatchet not only gives wood and plant fibers but can also drop Essence of Life. The game offers different methods to get your hands on this currency. Killing animals like sheep, cows, and rabbits also drops Essence of Life alongside their normal drops.
Certain neutral mobs, such as Root Spirits, are known to drop it when defeated in combat. Defeating animals and creatures is the best method while exploring and hunting, allowing you to gain essence while doing other objectives. Find the wild wheat and crops in the Grasslands or Plains Biomes. Chop trees and bushes in forests to obtain this ingredient.
You can also obtain the Essence of Life by harvesting the crops you grow on your farm. This is also another good way to get your hands on it. Plant more seeds and harvest them when they’re mature to obtain this currency/ingredient.
How To Use Essence of Life
You can use the Essence of Life to trade with the Rootling Merchant or acquire certain farming and animal‑management tools. This is not a combat or weapon crafting resource, but it focuses on survival, farming, and trading.
1. Trading Currency with NPC
The best possible way to use Essence of Life as a currency to trade with a specific friendly NPC. You can find this merchant in the Forgotten Temple. Once you reach the Forgotten Temple Gateway HUB, you unlock trading for Essence of Life. Make your way to the Forgotten Temple on your map. Go to the lowest chamber and defeat the golem standing in front of the portal.
Once defeated, enter through the blue portal to reach the Forgotten Temple. Find the Rootling Merchant in the middle of this area and interact with it. This NPC accepts Essence of Life as payment for items. You can spend it on raw food and ingredients like Dough, Salt, Spices, and more.
The merchant’s inventory refreshes every few in‑game days, so make sure to check it out. Trade the Essence of Life with raw food, cooked skewers, and other basic survival supplies.
2. Crafting Farming & Animal Tools
This in-game currency can be used as an ingredient for crafting certain farming and animal-related tools. You need to craft the Farmer’s Workbench to use Essence of Life as an ingredient. Use 20xPlant Fiber and 6xTree Trunk to craft the Farmer’s Workbench at the standard workbench.
Once crafted and placed at a suitable location, interact with it to craft Feed Bags and Capture Crates.
The Feed Bag is used to attract animals to a specific location, and the Capture Crate allows you to capture small animals and relocate them. Use this ingredient to craft Chicken Coops, Fishing Traps, Fertilizer Bags, different seed bags, planters, and saplings.
