What is a backpack in Hytale?

The backpack in Hytale is an item you craft and consume to permanently increase your inventory slots beyond the base inventory. This doesn’t work like armor, and you don’t see it visibly on your character by default. This works as an inventory expansion system accessed through the backpack tab in your inventory.

A backpack tab appears in your inventory screen after crafting using the required materials and backpack item. This additional space is great for storing additional items like resources, spare tools, and crafting materials while keeping the combat essentials in your hotbar.
You can also upgrade the backpack to the next tier to gain more slots, allowing you to add more items. These upgrades require more advanced materials like cinder cloth scraps, cobalt ingots, heavy leather, or even Memory progression.
How To Craft a Backpack

Make sure to craft the standard workbench from your inventory to unlock the recipe for the backpack. Basic materials are required to craft this crafting station. Once crafted and placed at a suitable location, interact with it. Go to the Tinkering Tab and find the backpack recipe. The materials required to craft this item are 8xIron Ingot and 16xMedium Leather.
Acquire Materials To Craft a Backpack

Iron Ingot is obtained by smelting the Iron Ore at furnace. Make your way to the secret caves and use the pickaxe to mine the Iron Ore. Return to the base and interact with the Furnace to add the Iron Ore into the Input Slot.
Any type of wood, like an oak log, is required as a fuel. Find any tree and use the pickaxe to cut it down, allowing you to obtain the wood. Turn on the smelting process and wait for it to complete to gain an Iron Ingot.
The Medium Leather is obtained by converting the Medium Hide at the Tanning Rack. You can acquire the Medium Hide by killing medium-sized animals like wolves and animals.
Once collected, interact with the Tanning Rack to add it to the input slot to obtain the Medium Leather. After obtaining all the required materials, interact with the standard workbench to craft a backpack.
How To Upgrade a Backpack Tier 1

Upgrading the backpack in Hytale is essential to increase its number of slots. The game offers so many resources that you may be left with limited slots in inventory and hotar. This makes it crucial to have more slots in your backpack to carry more resources.
You can upgrade the backpack from the workbench using the correct resources. The materials required to upgrade it to tier 1 are 8x Cobalt Ingots, 24x Heavy Leather, and 40x Cindercloth Scraps. Upgrading the back to tier 1 grants 10 extra slots.

You can’t find the cobalt available in the early starting zones, so you need to explore colder, mid- to late-game regions. This rare item spawns on snowy mountain slopes, on cliff faces, and in underground caves inWhisperfrost Frontiers. Look for dark blue ore veins embedded in stone, as they are easier to spot in snowy surface.
Cobalt can also appear as a secondary ore in some underground lava tunnels or caves in the Devastated Lands Zone 4. Once you find cobalt ore blocks, mine them to collect raw cobalt ore. Make sure you’ve Iron Pickaxe to successfully mine cobalt. Interact with the Furnace and add it to the input slot to initiate the smelting process.

Heavy Leather is obtained by turning the Heavy Hide in the Tanning Rack. You can obtain this hide by killing the bigger animals like Bears and Mosshorns. These animals are located in woodland and snowy biomes like forests or mountain areas.
Polar Bears or Yetis in snow biomes and large desert predators can drop multiple Heavy Hides. Once you have Heavy Hide, interact with the Tanning Rack to obtain Heavy Leather.
You can obtain the Cindercloth Scraps by defeating certain enemies in volcanic or fire-based regions. Burning Steps and Devastated Lands are the best locations to get inside to defeat these enemies.
Elemental fire mobs in volcanic plains are the common source of Cindercloth Scraps. Not every enemy in the zone will drop scraps, so focus on fire-based mobs. Once you acquire all the materials, interact with the standard workbench to upgrade the Backpack tier to tier 1.
How To Upgrade a Backpack Tier 2

Upgrading the backpack to tier 2 in Hytale allows you to gain nine additional slots. You need more space to add more items during the mid-to-end game. The materials required to upgrade the backpack tier 2 are 1x Voidheart, 8x Adamantite Ingot, and 16x Storm Leather. Acquiring these materials can be challenging, as you need to play the game for hours.
Obtaining the 100 memories while progressing and submitting them to the heart of Orbis allows you to unlock the recipe to upgrade the backpack to tier 2. Focus on encountering new animals, creatures, and NPCs to get more memories.
Once you obtain the required memories, get inside the Forgotten Temple and record the memories. Doing so allows you to craft the Backpack Upgrade II from the Memories screen using the required materials.

Voidheart is an epic-rarity item dropped by powerful Void enemies. It isn’t found in chests or world nodes, and you can’t craft it. Voidheart only drops from Void creatures such as Void Eyes, Void Spawns, Void Spectres, Void Crawlers, and Larva. These enemies spawn primarily at night, so make sure to hunt after dusk to find them.
Void Eyes are floating creatures with good spawn rates and a decent chance to drop Voidheart. Void Spawns are the humanoid void warriors that also drop Voidheart. Zone 3 icy biome is the best early farming spot due to frequent Void Enemy spawns. Killing as many Void enemies as possible increases your chance because this is a rare drop.

Adamantite Ingot is obtained by smelting the Adamantite in the furnace. Adamantite doesn’t spawn in early zones because it only appears in the Devastated Lands. This is a volcanic biome filled with aggressive enemies and lava. Adamantite ore looks like dark red-purple crystal veins embedded in volcanic rock. You need at least an Iron Pickaxe or better to mine this ore.
You can get the Storm Leather by converting the Storm Hide at the Tanning Rack. Storm Hide is dropped by storm creatures, which are rare hostile enemies. These mobs spawn in dangerous zones like Zones 3 and 4 during the storms.

You typically need to explore those areas when weather conditions are stormy. Once you have Storm Hide, take it to a Tanning Rack and refine it into Storm Leather. This process takes about 60 seconds per unit.
How To Use a Backpack

Once the Backpack item is crafted, place it on your Hotbar. Press the RMB while holding it to consume the item and permanently unlock extra inventory space for your character. After using the backpack, open your main inventory to see a Backpack tab or icon next to your character.
Make sure to click it to view the backpack’s extra slots. Initially, this adds about 9 extra slots, separate from your main inventory. You can store any items in your backpack space, from resources to gear. Backpack items are not equipped gear but purely inventory expansion.
