As the first main boss you’ll encounter, The Herald can be a tough introduction to the game’s bigger battles.

In this guide, we’ll break down his attacks, how the fight works, and the best way to bring him down.

Preparations

The Herald has three phases and has both an HP bar and a shield bar. The fight works by depleting his shield, which is represented by the purple segments above his health bar, in order to stun him.

This is when you will actually be able to damage the boss. Between each phase, you will need to repeat this process.

It’s recommended that you have at least one upgraded weapon of your choice, and have increased your maximum HP and the number of potions at your disposal.

Phase 1

The Herald uses a variety of attacks. The first is when he sends fire shockwaves, either one or two to cover the whole arena. You can easily dodge these forward or backward depending on where you are.

Meanwhile, the two speakers on the Herald’s side will be throwing projectiles at Will. Before they impact the ground, you will get red circles indicating where they will land, so simply avoid them.

After that, he will usually follow this with a laser beam of fire that goes from left to right. During this phase, you can take cover behind one of the two covers in the arena to avoid it completely.

Throughout all these attacks, you will notice that purple objects will be thrown onto the map. You need to use Rapture, your backpack attack, and aim it at the boss to remove one segment of its shield.

This doesn’t really require any aim, as you just need to stand behind the purple object and hit the button for the backpack attack. You need to repeat this process six times until the shield is broken.

When the shield is broken, the Herald will be stunned, and this is your opportunity to land as many hits as you can on him.

Phase 2

After you deplete one-third of his health, the Herald will regain his power and regenerate the shield again. He will also destroy one of the two covers in the arena.

In addition to that, he will spawn a few enemies in the arena that you must defeat as soon as possible. This will give you a better opportunity to focus on the purple objects and the boss’s attacks.

From here, the fight remains mostly the same. He only adds one attack in which he shoots small fire projectiles at you, and the fire laser beam can now go from right to left and return.

Simply dodge his attacks and use the backpack attack to throw the shield back at him and destroy it. When it’s destroyed, attack until you get his health down to the last third.

Phase 3

The Herald is now angry and will destroy the only remaining cover in the arena. This means that you will be completely open with no cover at all and will need to rely on your dodging.

He will also call upon a new wave of enemies, which you need to defeat as soon as possible. Since you have no cover, you need to dodge the fire laser beam attack while also carefully looking out for projectiles.

The attacks are the same, but they happen more often and are more aggressive, so expect more fire shockwaves and projectiles at you.

You need to repeat the same process: destroy his shield and then go in for the attacks.

The Reward

After successfully defeating the Herald, you will get two chests containing high-quality relics, alongside a new crafting material called Sound of Hubris.
