Of Ash and Steel, a medieval RPG inspired by the likes of the Gothic series, has just been released. There were concerns regarding its optimization, but the developers have launched a patch that managed to improve the performance by quite a lot, although it is still not ideal. If you want to know more about the game, you can head over to its Steam page.
As in this game, there is no hand-holding; you will need some guidance on what to do. You will need to keep track of Tristan’s condition, and hunger is one of the main ones. Food also restores health and is an absolute necessity. So here I will guide you on how to fish in Of Ash and Steel, so you can have a steady source of food from the beginning.

How To Fish In Of Ash And Steel

As you finish the intro and your area is raided by a group, you will find yourself in an abandoned village. That is where the game actually starts. Having done some chores, you will be on your own, but the area you wake up in is like the main hub for now. There are many things to your advantage, especially the fishing area.
After exiting the house you were resting in, head to the left side and follow the path. From there, you will find some bait and a fishing rod. You can use the fishing rod to catch fish, but it is not that simple. If you fail, you will waste a bait, and they are pretty limited.

As you start fishing, you will notice there are three things you can do: Hook, Reel, and Land Fish. Ignore the Land Fish for now, as you need to use that at the very end when your success rate is high. The game will tell you when to Hook and when to Reel, but that is the tricky part.
You need to be pretty quick and careful. Hook is a one-tap, but Reel is a hold. If it displays Hook, press the left button of the mouse, and you are good. If it displays Reel, then hold the right button until the pop-up disappears. It may look like the game is asking you to press the right button again and again instantly, but you do not have to do that. You just have to hold the button to Reel.
Catching A Fish Successfully

If you perform the tasks successfully, you will not decrease the durability meter too much. However, if you fail to perform the right task, the durability meter will be decreased quite a lot. If it goes to zero, the fish will escape, and your bait will be wasted.
As I said before, you have limited bait, so you need to be careful. Observe what the game asks you to do and perform in that manner. Do not be too hasty; first look, then react. Only react when you are certain, so you do not waste bait.
When you have successfully performed the actions, your success chance will increase. When it becomes higher, the game will tell you to land the fish. Do so, and you will catch a fish successfully.
While you have limited bait, you can get it from different fishing spots. This is not the only one; as you explore the area, you may find more. I managed to find one more, and some bait were lying around. I did find another one, but there was a hostile NPC there who seemed to have already used the bait to catch some fish. So in that case, you can kill the NPC and take their fish and money, of course.
That is pretty much it for how to catch a fish in Of Ash and Steel. You should also read my beginner’s tips and tricks guide for the best start.
