Of Ash And Steel – How To Get The Best Early Game Armor Sets

Of Ash and Steel Featured Image

Of Ash and Steel is a pretty complicated game, as it is inspired by titles like the Gothic franchise. This game is not for players who want pointers and clues at every turn. It leaves you on your own, so you have to figure out most things yourself. NPCs give you hints about where to go and what to do, but those hints may feel vague to some players.

You can find plenty of useful weapons and other items in this game, but you will notice there is a lack of armor sets. That is because there are not many of them, especially in the early game areas. However, there are some pretty good ones, though they are not easy to find. In this guide, I will show you how to get the best early game armor sets in Of Ash and Steel.

For more information about the game, head over to its Steam page. There, you can see what the community thinks of it and interact with other players.

Woodcutter Set

Path right next to the wooden bridge Of Ash and Steel.

By now, you may already know how to get to the woodcutter’s camp, but if you do not, then do not worry. You may remember Radim, who gives the Bad Neighborhood quest. Before you reach him, there is a bridge to cross. Before that bridge, on the right side, there is a path. Head there and follow it to the end. Now you need to jump across the gap to the other side over the waterfall.

Woodcutter's Camp Of Ash and Steel

Reach the other side and climb up. Even if you fall, do not worry; just climb back up and continue following the path ahead. You will eventually reach the woodcutter’s camp. Once you are there, you need to talk to Akim. He can usually be found at the entrance, but if you cannot find him, he will be inside his house sleeping.

How To Get The Woocutter’s Clothing

Make sure you go during the day, since he will be at the entrance. After talking to him, a quest called The Hungry Woodcutters will be triggered. There is a shack on the right side of the camp; head there and open it. Go inside to fight a rat monster and then loot the area. Here, you will find the Woodcutter’s Clothing.

Important Note

There are four ways to enter the city. You can either give the guard the 200 gold payment and enter through the front gate, or you can refuse the payment, anger them with one of the dialogue options, and then run away. After that, you can come back and enter the city freely. The other two methods are simpler. Head to the far left side of the main gate and climb the vines. However, this requires 12 Dexterity, so make sure you meet the requirement. The last option is to head to the right and swim across to enter the city. Choose whichever method works best for you.

How To Get Woodcutter’s Trousers

In order to get the Woodcutter’s Trousers, you need to head to the city and buy them. If you do not know how to reach the city, do not worry. Check out my walkthrough on The Long Road Home. By reading that, you will be able to reach the city without any issues. I have explained both the normal route and the shortcut as well.

Enter the city, head right, follow the path, and then turn right again. You will see two paths on the right; choose the one on the left. Keep going forward, and then go up the stairs. Follow the path ahead, take a right, then take another right. Now go down the stairs and head north. The shop in front of you is where you will find the second half of your Woodcutter’s set.

Woodcutter's Trousers Of Ash and Steel

The shop owner, Dillis, will most likely be outside the shop. Talk to him and buy the Woodcutter’s Trousers. The protection this armor set offers is not really worth mentioning. However, that is not the main reason why it is one of the best early-game armor sets in Of Ash and Steel. It stands out because of the passive bonus it gives.

Once you complete the set, you will get +3 Strength and +3 Stamina, which is honestly pretty great.

Important Note

From where you bought the Woodcutter’s trousers, there is a pretty solid armor set you can get. The set is called the Sturdy Jerkin Set, and it has the fine tag. This set offers pretty solid protection, far better than the woodcutter’s armor, and it gives +10 Stamina, which is extremely useful. That is because you need a lot of stamina in this game, since it is required for sprinting and for combat.

Smith’s Work Clothes Set

To get the Smith’s Work Clothes Set, enter the city and follow the same route you used when heading to get the Woodcutter’s Trousers. Now, instead of going up the stairs, head to the right and then take a left. Take another left, then a right, and follow the path ahead while staying on the left side.

Along the way, you will see a giant furnace, and right next to it will be a door you need to enter. Go up the stairs, make a U-turn, and then enter the room to your right. There will be a blacksmith’s key on the table. It will be on the right side near the wall. Steal the key, head back down, and move to the other side of the counter.

Blacksmith's Key Of Ash and Steel

Open the chest to get the Smith’s Work Clothes Set along with three Iron Ingots. Do note that you can also buy this set from the same shop where you bought the Woodcutter’s Trousers. However, it is not worth spending money on it, since you can get it for free.

Chest Of Ash and Steel

There is also one more armor set you can get, but it may not be worth the trouble. It can take some time, and the route is pretty confusing. So it is better to choose between the three sets I have mentioned above. That is pretty much everything you would need to know how to get the best early game armor sets in Of Ash and Steel.
