The Ultimate Solar Punk Guide: Everything You Need to Know

Welcome to our guide to Solar Punk.

After finishing Solar Punk and having made practically every new player mistake, I have learned that the hardest part of the game is not surviving but trying to understand its mechanics. Here you will find all the information necessary from starting survival and resources to power networks, automation, airships, and endgame strategies.

Getting Started: Your First Day Priorities

At the very beginning, you will have only your axe to begin with. You need to avoid the urge of constructing anything permanent at this stage.

The most important thing that needs to be done on the very first day is the acquisition of necessary resources.

Essential Early Resources

ResourceWhy You Need It
WoodRequired for nearly every early-game recipe
CottonCritical for future crafting and beeswax fuel production
RaspberriesProvides energy for sprinting and mobility
SticksUsed for tools and crafting
StonesNeeded for axes, pickaxes, and basic progression

Important Crafting Tip

A number of beginners often waste time collecting sticks.

It is possible to make sticks by using wooden materials directly from the crafting option without necessarily requiring a crafting bench. The only thing you need to do is collect more trees to get wood.

The Early Loot Chest Advantage

Finding a loot chest early can dramatically accelerate your progress. So get to exploring the central island.

A single well-stocked chest often provides enough materials to craft:

  • A pickaxe
  • A backup axe
  • A crafting table
  • A hoe for farming

Once you’ve crafted a table, place it near a water source. A permanent base isn’t necessary yet, but farming should begin immediately.

Why Start Farming on Day One?

Early farming allows crops to benefit from the first rainfall, effectively giving you free irrigation and accelerating food production.

Water Management

Water quickly becomes one of the most important resources in the game.

Farm Placement

Always establish your farm near a water source.

You’ll spend a significant amount of time watering crops early on, and minimizing travel distance saves both time and effort.

Rain Collectors

As soon as you unlock them, build at least three rain collectors.

Why Three?

All rain collectors fill simultaneously during rainstorms.

Number of CollectorsResult
1Limited water reserves
2Moderate water storage
3+Enough drinking water for several days

Building multiple collectors early eliminates most water-related concerns.

Tool Progression: Avoid the Iron Tool Trap

Many players rush to craft iron tools, assuming they’re required for advanced resource gathering.

In reality, this is largely unnecessary.

Tool Comparison

Tool TypeDurability
Stone Tools200
Iron Tools500

Although iron tools last longer, stone pickaxes can mine every ore type in the game.

There are no mining-tier restrictions.

Save Iron For:

  • Furnaces
  • Machinery
  • Advanced infrastructure
  • Important progression items

Since stone tools only require renewable resources such as sticks and stones, they’re usually the more efficient choice.

Understanding Ore Deposits

One of the most misunderstood mechanics in Solar Punk is ore generation.

Ore Nodes vs Ore Veins

TypeRenewable?Notes
Ore NodesNoDestroyed permanently when mined
Ore VeinsYesCan be mined infinitely

Recommendation

Avoid destroying ore nodes unless you immediately need the resources.

Instead, rely on ore veins embedded in terrain, which provide an unlimited long-term supply and can later be automated using drills.

Efficient Tree Harvesting

When a tree falls:

  • Wood is automatically collected.
  • Saplings are automatically collected.

You do not need to manually pick up dropped resources.

Faster Logging Method

  1. Strike a tree several times.
  2. Move immediately to the next tree.
  3. Continue rotating through nearby trees.

By the time you return, previously damaged trees will have fallen and their resources will already be in your inventory.

Replant Every Sapling

Every harvested tree provides one sapling.

Always replant them to maintain a renewable wood supply and prevent deforestation of your starting island.

Why Beehives Are Essential

Beehives are among the most valuable structures in the game.

A large late-game setup can easily support seven or more hives.

Beeswax Production

Beehives produce beeswax.

Beeswax combined with cotton fiber creates wax briquettes.

Fuel Efficiency Comparison

Fuel TypeRuntime
16 WoodApproximately 12 minutes
1 Wax BriquetteSignificantly more efficient
3 Wax Briquettes12 minutes

Wax briquettes are roughly four times more fuel-efficient than wood.

Important Note

Each hive only produces one beeswax per harvest cycle.

Building multiple hives dramatically improves production rates.

Generator Fuel Optimization

One of the easiest ways to waste resources is by overfilling generators.

Generators can accept more fuel than they are capable of consuming.

Any excess fuel beyond the generator’s maximum runtime is wasted.

Optimal Fuel Loading

FuelIdeal Amount
Wood16 pieces
Wax Briquettes3 briquettes

Runtime

Fuel LoadRuntime
16 Wood11 minutes 50 seconds
3 Wax Briquettes12 minutes

Use stack splitting to ensure maximum efficiency.

Electricity Guide

Power management is critical for automation and expansion.

Common Power Consumption

DevicePower Draw
Drill120W
Sprinkler40W
Transport Drone300W

Power Generation

Power SourceOutput
Basic Generator120W
Solar Panel70W
Windmill210W

Power Rule

Total generation must equal or exceed total consumption.

If demand exceeds supply, machines stop functioning.

Building One Unified Power Grid

A common mistake is creating multiple isolated electrical networks.

Instead:

  • Connect all power sources together.
  • Connect all devices to the same network.
  • Monitor one unified power balance.

This greatly simplifies troubleshooting and expansion.

Batteries and Solar Power

Solar panels only operate during daylight hours.

Batteries store excess energy during the day and supply power at night.

ComponentQuantity
Solar Panels3
Battery1
Drill1

Why Three Solar Panels?

Two solar panels generate 140W.

A drill consumes 120W, leaving almost no excess power for battery charging.

Three panels produce 210W, allowing:

  • Drill operation
  • Battery charging
  • More reliable overnight operation

Cable Management

When placing cables, the game shows a ghost connection line.

If it snaps incorrectly:

  • Right-click to cancel.
  • Reconnect manually.

Connection Methods

  1. Connector-to-connector clicks
  2. Dragging cable paths
  3. Automatic connection

Manual connections are generally the safest option.

Switches and Wiring Problems

If a power switch doesn’t work:

The most likely cause is a direct cable connection bypassing the switch.

Correct Configuration

Power must flow:

Source → Switch → Device

Not:

Source → Device

with the switch connected separately.

Inspect your wiring carefully if switches appear non-functional.

Sensor Warning

Daylight sensors and rain sensors may be bugged in certain game versions.

If they behave unexpectedly, verify current behavior through community resources before rebuilding your entire setup.

Sprinkler Layout Guide

Each sprinkler irrigates a 2×4 area.

Optimal Layout

CoveragePlots Watered
2×48 plots

Place the sprinkler centrally within the rectangle for complete coverage.

Avoid attempting large 4×4 layouts, as edge tiles may not receive consistent watering.

Power Usage

Each sprinkler consumes only 40W, making them relatively inexpensive to operate.

Airships and Exploration

Building your dock and airship unlocks large portions of the game.

Exploration Progression Loop

  1. Explore reachable islands.
  2. Complete deliveries for the robot on the central floating island.
  3. Earn rewards and blueprints.
  4. Upgrade your dock and ship.
  5. Increase exploration range.
  6. Repeat.

You will perform four major ship upgrades throughout progression.

Upgraded Dock Benefits

The upgraded dock allows boosted return trips to your base, saving considerable travel time.

Important Warning

Airships maintain momentum after acceleration ends.

Improper braking can result in collisions with your dock—or worse.

Crashes can be fatal.

Inventory Expansion: Don’t Miss the Backpack

Several backpack upgrades exist throughout the world.

Common Mistake

Finding an upgrade before finding the base backpack.

Without the original backpack, upgrade items are unusable.

Whenever you discover inventory upgrades, equip them immediately.

Chest Completion Requirements

Players pursuing achievement completion should note:

A chest only counts as fully looted when every item has been removed.

Leaving even a single item behind prevents completion tracking.

Late-Game Assistance

A later-game device can help locate missed chests if necessary.

Stairs

Many valuable rewards are hidden on elevated terrain.

These include:

  • Chests
  • Rare crops
  • Valuable resources

Fortunately, stairs can be built nearly anywhere, allowing access to otherwise unreachable locations.

Whenever in doubt, build stairs.

Sleeping Mechanics

Unlike most survival games, sleeping does not accelerate processing.

What Sleeping Does

  • Skips nighttime
  • Returns daylight immediately
  • Reactivates solar power generation

What Sleeping Does Not Do

  • Speed up crop growth
  • Accelerate furnace processing
  • Advance crafting timers

Use sleep primarily as a power-management tool.

Remote Mining and Automation

As the game progresses, manually visiting resource islands becomes inefficient.

Instead, establish remote mining operations.

Basic Mining Outpost

This setup can operate a remote mine with minimal supervision.

Transport Drones

Transport drones are among the most powerful automation tools in Solar Punk.

Setup Process

  1. Craft a drone.
  2. Place it at your base.
  3. Name the drone.
  4. Travel to a remote drill.
  5. Assign the drone.

The drone will automatically transport resources between the drill and your base.

Drone Limitations

LimitationDetails
Drill AssignmentOne drone per drill
Inventory Capacity16 items
Capacity UpgradeCircuit doubles capacity
Storage FullDrone stops operating
Drill RelocationRequires reassignment

Power Consumption

Each drone requires:

300W

Plan your power infrastructure accordingly.

Animal Farming

To capture animals, you need:

  • Animal Receiving Station
  • Animal Transportation Device

Each transportation device is single-use.

Craft several before beginning animal collection.

Animal Requirements

Animals require:

  1. Food
  2. Water
  3. Shelter

Without all three, resource production stops.

Troubleshooting

If animals stop producing:

  • Save the game.
  • Reload the save.

This often resolves pathfinding issues preventing access to food or water.

Animal Feed Alternatives

Wheat is not the only valid feed ingredient.

Alternative recipes include:

  • Sunflowers
  • Various crops

Use whichever resources are most abundant in your production chain.

Late-Game Animal Products

Several cosmetics require:

  • Eggs
  • Milk
  • Truffles

Maintaining at least two of the three animal species significantly reduces endgame grinding.

Fishing: Is It Worth It?

Short answer: no.

Fishing primarily yields:

  • Rocks
  • Sand
  • Leaves

All of these materials can be obtained more efficiently through other methods.

The activity itself provides minimal value compared to other progression systems.

Unless you simply enjoy fishing, it can safely be ignored.
