Whiskerwood has just been released, and like any other city builder, it can be a little complicated to play. The game has a solid foundation and an interesting setting, combining city building with a cozy vibe. If you want to learn more about the game, head over to its Steam page.
As it is a city builder, you may find it difficult to meet goals and quotas, which can make the experience feel overwhelming. That is exactly why I have decided to put together a beginner’s tips and tricks guide for you. In this guide, I will share some of my advanced tips and tricks for Whiskerwood so you can have the best possible experience.
Disclaimer
Whiskerwood is currently in Early Access, so it is still a work in progress. This means it is not the final version, and there are likely to be some changes in the future. If you are not satisfied with its current state, it might be better to wait for the final release.

Choose The Normal Difficulty

Even if you have experience playing city builders, I recommend choosing the normal difficulty, as making mistakes in this setting is pretty hard. You may still slip up, but that’s completely fine because you’ll learn from your mistakes. Sure, you’ll face some penalties and consequences, but they won’t be too harsh, at least early in the game.
So, choose the normal difficulty instead of hard or dire. You can even pick the cozy one if you want a peaceful experience without much pressure. If you’re completely new to this genre, I recommend starting with the cozy option. That said, the difficulty setting plays a vital role in your overall experience, so make sure to think about it before you choose.
Focus On Approval From The Beginning

Approval is one of the main mechanics in Whiskerwood, as many aspects of your colony depend on it. You really need to focus on earning more approval from your whiskers. In the first few days, it is important to stay focused and complete key tasks such as building houses for your whiskers, setting up a steady food supply, and establishing other essentials like mining and chopping wood for logs.
Your main goal for gaining approval is to keep your whiskers happy. If you cannot keep them content, they will become displeased and start generating negative thoughts, which will lower your approval rating. This mechanic is crucial because higher approval allows you to hire more whiskers and assign them overtime work. There are additional benefits later in the game, but these are the main ones early on. Also, avoid bringing in whiskers with rude traits, as they can spread negative thoughts to others and lower overall morale.
Focus On Paying Taxes And Debt

It may seem like one of the simple tips in Whiskerwood, but you really need to focus on paying the taxes and debts you owe. The tax collectors will arrive soon, and it is very possible that you might not have enough resources to cover what you owe. Stockpiles and food are not that valuable early on, so spending too much time on them is not a good idea.
Instead, focus on mining different ores to make tax payments more efficient. In the early game, I recommend prioritizing coal and stone, or even gemstones if you can access them easily. If you fail to pay enough tax, your relationship with the cat overlords will worsen, and you will miss out on the gifts they provide.
To manage your taxes and debts more effectively, avoid buying anything from the supply ship early on. Recruiting more whiskers is fine, but do not spend extra resources on supplies, as you should already have enough to last for a day or two.
Carefully Place Buildings

One of the most important tips I can give you in Whiskerwood is to carefully place your buildings. This does not just mean arranging them in a way that looks nice. You can do that if you want, but the main goal is to make your workers more efficient by placing storage buildings close to their worksites.
This way, they will not have to travel far, and progress will be much faster. You also need to be careful when placing buildings like the Mining Camp and Woodcutter. Check how much area they cover before placing them. One building is never enough, so as you progress further into the game, make sure to build more to keep up with demand.
Pay Close Attention To Whisker’s Traits

When you bring in new whiskers, you should not just focus on those with the highest expectations. It is better to hire a variety of whiskers instead of choosing the same types. This is because you need whiskers from different guilds. For example, a whisker from the miner’s guild will work much more efficiently at the mining camp.
Also, after you have built a school, you can provide education for your whiskers to improve their skills and increase their expectations.
Fear The Winter
Winter is harsh, and you really need to stock up on supplies before it arrives. It will halt much of your production, so you will have to rely on whatever you have stored. Take winter very seriously, and if you are playing on the hardest mode, then my friend, you have my condolences.
You can still grow crops during winter, but you will need a proper heating setup, or they will be ruined. The cold is so severe that it can even kill your whiskers, so be very careful and start preparing from day one.
That is pretty much it for my advanced tips and tricks to survive in Whiskerwood. Since it is a city builder, you need to manage your supplies carefully and pay your taxes regularly to stay out of trouble. Hopefully, my tips will be helpful for you, and I hope you enjoy the game to the fullest.
