Whiskerwood is a cozy city builder, but sometimes it can feature really intense moments. While you have to pay taxes to the cat overlords and settle your debts, there are other things you need to worry about. One such challenge is an encounter with pirates, which is rare but does happen.
Once this encounter occurs early in the game, you will be given two options to choose from. You can either refuse to cooperate or pay them a ransom. Here, I will guide you on whether you should refuse to cooperate with pirates or pay them a ransom in Whiskerwood.
One a side note, if you want to learn more about the game, head over to its official Steam page.

Whiskerwood is currently in Early Access, so it is still a work in progress. This means it is not the final version, and there are likely to be some changes in the future. If you are not satisfied with its current state, it might be better to wait for the final release.
What Happens If You Don’t Cooperate With The Pirates In Whiskerwood?

Early in the game, you will receive a quest: We do not negotiate with the pirates. This quest tasks you with refusing the pirate’s demand and gives you some reward in return. Now, should you complete it? Pirates can appear at your colony and demand ransom. If you do not pay them, you will have to face the consequences.
However, if you do pay them, you may miss your tax quota, which would be much worse for you. So, the correct option here seems to be refusing cooperation. In my playthrough, they demanded 89 gold coins, which is not a small amount early in the game.

So, if you do pay them, you are likely to miss the quota for taxes. Therefore, I would recommend refusing cooperation with the pirates and facing the consequences. Upon refusing, the pirates will open fire on your colony and damage some of your buildings. You can minimize the risk of damaging your buildings by paying them half, a quarter, or more than half of the ransom they are demanding.

However, if you do not pay them at all, they will damage a few of your buildings, and that would be random. So you will need to repair them, which will not take many resources. After you have refused cooperation, you can complete the quest and repair the damaged buildings with the reward you received. You will also get three machinery.
That said, if you want peace, you can pay the full ransom, and the pirates will be satisfied. That is pretty much everything you would want to know about whether you should cooperate with the pirates or pay a ransom in Whiskerwood.
