Whiskerwood was recently released in early access, and while there is no information on when the game will fully release, it looks promising. If you want to know more about the title, head over to its Steam page.
In this game, you need to develop a colony under the orders of the cat overlords. Mice, also known as Whiskers, work in your colony to pay off debts, taxes, and to develop a beautiful city. That said, what would happen if you don’t pay your debts or taxes in Whiskerwood? That is what I will tell you in this guide.
Disclaimer
Whiskerwood is currently in Early Access, so it is still a work in progress. This means it is not the final version, and there are likely to be some changes in the future. If you are not satisfied with its current state, it might be better to wait for the final release.
Taxes And Debt In Whiskerwood

As you start a game, you sign a charter and take some debt. While you do have to pay that debt, you need to pay some tax too. So, you will have to pay a large amount of your money as the first payment, and you may not even meet the quota. That can happen quite often, as city builders are complicated and may take some time to figure out. You can read my beginner’s tips and tricks if you want to make the experience better for yourself.
You may think you only get debt once after signing the charter. However, that is not the case. You will regularly get some supplies, and rejecting them will damage your relationship. So you must select another option if you don’t want to damage the relationship. However, what if you don’t have any money? That is when you will receive even more debt.
What Happens If You Fail To Pay The Tax Collector

The tax collectors will come every few days to collect the taxes and debt you owe. If you don’t meet the quota, you can always send a partial payment, but that will anger the overlords. If you continue to send them partial payments, your debt will increase, and you will have to pay more and more each time.
That said, this isn’t the only consequence you will face if you fail to pay your debts. After failing to pay tax a couple of times, your Whiskers will start to doubt you. This can damage their morale, and they may not work as well as they are supposed to.

Not only that, but if you fail to pay tax consecutively a few times, the cat overlords will attack your colony just like the pirates. This will damage some of your buildings, which will make you struggle a lot. That is because you already don’t have enough resources to pay the tax (unless you are avoiding payment to the overlords on purpose).
After the attack, I noticed a new mechanic in Whiskerwood. It is known as Rebellion Fervor, which in the colony leads to rumors about being free from Claws in the future. This occurred after not paying the tax to the overlords a few times, and it inspires the Whiskers to work harder. So, not everything will negatively impact your colony, but I think the damage you receive is much greater.
That is pretty much everything you would want to know about what happens if you don’t pay your debt and taxes in Whiskerwood.
