Where Winds Meet – Chapter Two: Universal Furnace Walkthrough Part 1

Where Winds Meet

Where Winds Meet‘s first chapter kicks off to a great start, setting the foundation of the story, but it’s Chapter Two that builds on the events that have transpired so far. In this walkthrough, we’ll be covering every step that you have to take as you progress through the game’s story. For more information on Where Winds Meet, check out its official website here.

After the bandits’ attack on the Blissful Retreat, you’ve received a letter, or an email, inviting you to the Wheatwind Bazaar, just outside of Kaifeng city, which is the capital. Before you can begin Chapter Two, you’ll have to acquire all the Wandering Mystic Arts in Qinghe.

The Boatman

After completing Chapter One: Heaven Has No Pier, you’ll have to go to the docks in the northwest area of Qinghe. You want to get to Kaifeng to meet someone named Wen Wuque, who sent you a letter to meet them in the Wheatwind Bazaar outside Kaifeng.

Find the boatman at the docks, and he’ll take you to Kaifeng. The boatman also offers to get you a job in Kaifeng so you can earn some money, but as your main character refuses, he’ll ask you to keep your purse in check.

As soon as you arrive in Kaifeng, several people will try to persuade you to give them money and offer you a ride to the Revelry. However, the boatmen will ask them to go away. He then offers you some words of advice to keep your wits about you, as this place is full of people trying to take advantage of you.

From the docks of Kaifeng, you have to make your way to the Wheatwind Bazaar. It’s a long road, so call your horse and be on your way.

The Myth Of The Treasure Basin

By now, you may have overheard the talk of a treasure basin that can produce gold out of nowhere. As you walk into the Wheatwind Bazaar, you’re met by an old lady selling handmade turtles. Spare some gold for the lady and buy one. Keep progressing to the area shown in the quest marker.

You’ll encounter a widow here, who’ll be asking you to put some coins in her treasure basin. Anyhow, you’ll overhear a group of thugs mention the name of Wen Wuque shortly ahead. There’s a crowd here, and the man has got an elaborate treasure basin, claiming it to produce gold out of nowhere.

The widow arrives and tells you about the Ember of East, someone also known as Wen Wuque, who’s holding a Heroes Assembly at the Revelry in some days, and he plans to unveil a treasure basin that really has the ability to produce gold from nothing, and because of that, the entire Kaifeng has been trying to imitate it and take advantage of others.

The widow points out that there have been many people claiming to be related to Wen Wuque in the past few days. You will then have to help and prove that these thugs are running a scam here. Even if you choose to observe, the crowd will leave after figuring out that it’s fake.

The Grand Scheme

The leader of the thugs throws a dagger at the widow, and as you try to push her out of the way, your coin purse falls on the ground. The widow steals it and runs away. You’re then stopped by the thugs and will have to fight against them.

Out of nowhere, a cat comes in and attacks the thugs. This cat is dressed in royal attire. You then hear a voice coming out of a Buddha statue nearby. The voice claims to be royalty, belonging to the Waiyang, and even has a Life Coin with them. The Life Coin scares the thugs because, in most cases, if you see a Life Coin, it means you’re going to pay for it with your life.

After the thugs run away, a young lady named Yingying shows up, who had just pranked the thugs. The young lady asks to treat you to a meal since you have no money on you now that your purse has been stolen.

You’ll then have to go with her to a nearby restaurant to eat. On the way, she tells you the Ember of East and how his real name is Wen Wuque.

After a hearty conversation, you’ll show her your jar of aged Parting Tears. Yingying will then say that her stomach is hurting and will leave you hanging in the restaurant by yourself, without paying for her food, of course.

You’ll have to wait for a long while, and you’ll be unable to leave the restaurant. You can overhear the conversation of others in the entire restaurant, including upstairs, while you wait. Shortly after, you’ll get a prompt that you can’t wait any longer.

Yingying’s Scam

Talk to the waiter, and he’ll tell you that the young lady has already come back and asked you to pay for her meal instead. She also handed a brocade bag to the waiter to give to you alongside a letter. The letter asks you not only not to pay the waiter, but to ask him for a loan instead by giving out your jar of Parting Tears as collateral.

Fortunately, the waiter agrees and gives you 10,000 gold coins. You promise the waiter that you’ll pay them back for the loan and the meal when you return for your jar of Parting Tears, and if you don’t, then they can sell the jar. You’ll have to play a very easy game of Gift of Gab here to convince the waiter.

After finally getting the gold from the waiter, you can open the brocade bag to find the next step of the scam. The letter in the bag asks you to buy grain from the cheapest grain store in the area and sell it to the Dao Lord because he pays premium rates for it.

You’ll have to go and buy 20 bags of grain with all your gold. But as you’re walking out, you’ll see a familiar face. It’s Old Jin, the man who was scamming people outside of the arena back in Qinghe.

Old Jin And The Little Girl

Old Jin offers to help you for a small percentage of the profits, offering to lead you to a buyer. When you refuse, he threatens you that not many people want to find out who he really is, and he’s also willing to share information with you. You’ll then have to agree to his demands.

You’ll have to go to the Dao Lord’s place with Old Jin, where you’ll find a little girl holding the fort. You and Old Jin both have doubts about this little girl, but she’s offering to pay you the money for the grain bags.

As you count the money left behind by the little girl, you’ll find a similar letter to the one Yingying gave you, asking you to watch out as the Jianghu is full of dangers.

In the meantime, Old Jin arrives with the little girl. He then accuses the little girl of swindling you because the coins she offered you were Tang Coins, a currency that’s banned in Kaifeng.

You’ll then take the little girl hostage, and Old Jin will lead you to another seller who can also pay a decent price for the grain bags. Here, you’ll get 12,000 coins after selling all of your grain bags.

The Collateral

Old Jin asks for his share, but the player character will ask for another errand where he has to find the little girl again and ask her who’s behind the entire scam. You’ll then have to go back to the restaurant to buy back the jar of Parting Tears.

The waiter will tell you that he’s already sold the wine to a buyer because the offer was too good to pass up. When you inquire about the buyer, the waiter will tell you that it was a well-dressed man, possibly from the Velvet Shade area. Now, you have to return to Old Jin.

As you return, you’ll find Old Jin having a hard time with the little girl. She’ll refuse to tell you about the one behind the entire scam operation, but she can act as a guide.

Here, you’ll have to part ways with Old Jin after giving him his share. You can also pay him extra if you feel generous. The little girl will then tell you that her name is Little Fu as she leads you to the Revelry Halls.

The Real Kaifeng

After you arrive in Kaifeng City, you’ll find it prosperous with many people and businesses. However, Little Fu says that the real Kaifeng isn’t like that at all. She’ll then offer to show you the real Kaifeng. Follow her and you’ll arrive in a less-developed area.

Things appear normal at first sight, but Little Fu asks you to “hear” the real Kaifeng. A cutscene plays where you see people dying of poverty, and a woman carrying her child without having anything to feed him, so she bites her finger, letting her son satiate his thirst with her blood as she collapses.

According to Little Fu, it’s all because Tang Coins have been banned, and the poor people have nothing else to spare. Little Fu will then ask you to follow her to the Revelry Hall.

In the middle of Kaifeng, you’ll see guards checking people’s belongings, and the thug who tried to scam you in Wheatwind Bazaar is currently being interrogated for the possession of Tang Coins, which were in your bag that the widow stole.

Here, no matter what choice you make, the guards will eventually come to check you, but you’re still holding the Tang Coins Little Fu gave you for the grain bags.

You’ll have to resist the guards, and it will turn into an all-out fight. Luckily, a generously healthy man notices your fighting style, suspecting it to be related to a man named Jiang. This man is Big Zhao, and he decides to help you by throwing chickens at the guards.

Things get worse, but Big Zhao has even bigger birds on hand as he releases several geese and whatnot from the cages to cause a commotion big enough for you and Little Fu to escape with him.

Big Zhao’s Help

Big Zhao hides with you inside a few shops as guards keep looking for you. He’ll ask you if you’re related to someone named Jiang, but he doesn’t push to ask you more questions when you don’t seem to understand what he’s talking about.

You’ll then have to follow Big Zhao as you tell him about your plans to enter the Revelry Halls. He then asks you if you have an Assembly Ticket, which is required to gain entry to the place. After finding out that you don’t have the ticket, Big Zhao says he’ll ask around for help to see if he can find a way in.

Big Zhao asks you to meet him at the docks near the Revelry Halls. He takes Little Fu with him. Now, you’ll have to go to the location where you’ll find Big Zhao waiting for you with Little Fu.

You’ll inquire if he obtained the Assembly Ticket, to which Big Zhao chuckles and asks you to wait for the boatman.

Luckily, it’s the same boatman who brought you to Kaifeng from Qinghe, and you set aboard on his boat alongside an official with the Ticket and land in Revelry Halls.

Revelry Hall

As you enter the Revelry Hall, you’ll find many new faces here. Little Fu seems to know a lot about everyone. However, the guards here are very strict.

You’ll see a couple trying to gain entry without a ticket, and they’ll be able to get past the guards, but the Ember of East appears and ends their lives with the Life Coin.

Now, Big Zhao asks you to follow him, as simply gaining entry without the ticket doesn’t seem possible. Big Zhao gives you some revealing clothing to disguise you and himself.

Get changed there, and Big Zhao will try to use his beauty charms on you, but they’re not as effective as he hoped them to be. Anyhow, you’ll find that Little Fu has left you amidst all this chaos.

You’ll be able to gain entry now, thanks to Big Zhao’s connections. You have to make your way to the third floor and follow Big Zhao. He’ll then talk to the guards standing beside Ember of East, and they’ll leave, allowing you two to assume the guard duty for the Ember of East.

The Miracle And The Theft

Ember of East then decides to unveil the Gold-Making Vessel. He then asks some politically powerful people about who wants to use the vessel first.

Everyone wants it to be them, but Lord Shi from the Great Song Court says he wants it first, and Ember of East lets him. As he puts his hand in the Treasure Basin, it does indeed start to produce gold coins.

However, there’s a sudden explosion in the halls, and everything goes into chaos with everyone trying to get their hands on the vessel after witnessing its power.

Amidst all the chaos, a vessel covered in a bag of cloth falls into your hands. You’ll have to fight everyone who is assuming that you have the Gold-Making Vessel in your hands. After the fights are done, the Prefect of Kaifeng will show up, asking you why you stole the vessel.

Prefect Of Kaifeng

The Prefect asks you to open up the cloth bag, and you’ll find that the Gold-Making Vessel isn’t inside it, but just a regular pot. He assumes that you’re collaborating with the thief, which is why you distracted everyone with the fake vessel in your hands.

During the conversation, Ember of East casually refers to the Parting Tears wine in front of you, likely telling you that they’re aware of your true identity. However, they make no move to help you out of your predicament.

However, after some negotiations, the Prefect of Kaifeng will give you one week to find the real thief. He asks you to ingest a poison pill that will immediately kill you if you’re unable to find the vessel and return it to him in exchange for the antidote.

Later, you’ll find out that Big Zhao is the Prefect of Kaifeng’s brother, and he has some amazing connections all over the place.

After the conversation, Big Zhao will ask you to search for the origin of the explosion on the third floor. As you go there, you’ll find a broken mask. Big Zhao doesn’t know who it belongs to, but he knows someone who might.

The player character will remind Big Zhao of their reason for being here, and that is to meet the Ember of East. However, he’s too busy with the officials after the attack on the Revelry Halls, so you don’t get a chance to meet him. Big Zhao will ask you to go to the theatre, where you’ll find Master Pu, who might know about the mask.

The Broken Mask And The Underworld

Go to the Entertainment District, where you’ll find Mister Pu. Big Zhao will also be waiting there. After showing Master Pu the broken mask, he’ll reveal that it might belong to the Nine Mortal Ways, but getting to them is quite difficult, as this group is very elusive.

Master Pu tells you about the Ferryman who can take you to the underworld to meet the Nine Mortal Ways. But this Ferryman has a very strict set of rules and will kill anyone who doesn’t act accordingly. Master Pu will ask you to go to the Forsaken Quarter in the southeast area of Kaifeng City. However, you’ll have to wait until the next day to go there.

You can open the menu and select the clock. Set the time to the Chen hour on the next day and then leave for the Forsaken Quarter. Big Zhao will meet you outside the area and will give you a list of rules written by Master Pu.

The list states a number of rules that include that you have to talk to a red-faced beggar near the entrance and hand them exactly 99 coins. However, you don’t have to memorize any of it as your character will simply do as the rules describe it.

Enter the area and approach the beggar sitting near the entrance. They’ll give you the location. Go to the area and the Ferryman will give you a map, which is something that you’ll have to obtain according to the rules, as the fare for the upcoming tour to the underworld.

Reunion In the Forsaken Quarter

Approach the location marked on the map, and you’ll find a scroll on the table. The constables here will be keeping a close eye on it, and there’s no way for you to get it undetected. Use Celestial Sieze on the scroll to obtain it, and the constables will start to chase after you.

You’ll have to be ready for a series of quick-time events here as you escape from the constables. In the end, Big Zhao will help you get away, but then you’ll meet another familiar face, the Turtle Lady.

Here, you’ll also find Little Fu, and it turns out, she lives with Granny Turtle. After the conversation with Granny Turtle, you’ll check the contents of the scroll that you just stole, and it talks about Tang Coins.

The Granny then tells you a scary story about a man wearing a stray basin as a hat, and then immediately, there’s a knock on the door, and it’s Big Zhao, wearing a stray basin as a hat. Shortly after the conversation, Yingying will also arrive, and it turns out, she’s Granny Turtle’s daughter.

Yingying is obviously surprised to see you, but wants you to keep her scam a secret from her mother. While you’re talking to her, the widow who stole your purse also returns to Yingying, but immediately runs away after seeing you with her. The same happens with Little Fu.

You’ll then have to go and check up on Little Fu. You’ll find her inside the house, hidden inside the barrel. Use your Vision ability to locate her. As she escapes, she crashes into the widow and both of them fall.

Multiple Apologies

It turns out that everyone who has scammed you so far in Kaifeng belongs to the same family. The widow will return your purse, but there’s a medical inscription inside that says she used up all the money to buy medicine for her children.

Anyway, the main character will scold her that it doesn’t give her any right to steal, and it would’ve been fine if they had given money to her of their own free will.

Yingying and the others will apologize to you for everything, with Granny Turtle going so far as to give you the amount the widow owes from her own pocket. Yinying suggests that everyone works with you to pay off the debt instead of Granny Turtle.

You and Big Zhao will then have dinner with the family. Big Zhao will go and rest on the roof after dinner, where you’ll have to go and find him.

Deduction

Talk to Big Zhao about what has happened so far, and this will open a deduction mini-game. Here, you have to match two sets of clues to get an idea of the bigger picture.

Match the Story of Nether Coins turning into Tang Coins with Hong Si’s Scroll, and you’ll find out that the increase in Tang Coins is because of the Ghost Market. For the second option, you’ll have to pair the increase in Tang Coins due to the Ghost Market with words of Master Pu to deduce that the New Tang Coins are a work of the Nine Mortal Ways.

Now, pair this newly deduced clue with the tattered mask, and you’ll find out that it is indeed the Nine Mortal Ways that might’ve stolen the Gold-Making Vessel, or the Treasure Basin.

After that, you’ll fall asleep, and you’ll wake up the next day with a letter from Big Zhao asking you to come to a nearby restaurant. However, you’ll first need to reach level 52 to progress.

Further quests will become available after you’ve reached the required level, and you can read about them in Part 2 of the walkthrough.
