6 indie cyberpunk games to play before Cyberpunk 2077

Need something to get into the cyberpunk mood? Don’t go making black market deals for a brain implant, check out these indie games instead.

Cyberpunk 2077 releases on 19th November, and if you’re excited to play it, you’re probably also prepping a binge of cyberpunk media. So while you get your face buried in the pages of Neuromancer or set up your home theatre for Blade Runner and Ghost in the Shell, we’ve compiled a list of (short) indie games that will get you feeling the corporatist dystopia that embodies this genre.

Ruiner

Ruiner is a brutal action game where you play as a wired psychopath, who, assisted by his mysterious hacker friend, is out to rescue his kidnapped brother. His enemies are the corporate titans of ‘HEAVEN’, who deal in virtuality and uphold a corrupt system.

Ruiner was released in 2017 and is available on PC, Mac, Linux, PS4, Xbox One, and the Switch.

VA-11 Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action

VA-11 Hall-A is a narrative game where you play as a bartender chatting with her customers, and make choices by mixing drinks. You also have to worry about your own life and finances, while keeping an eye on the politics that plague your city.

VA-11 Hall-A came out in 2016 first, and is now available on PC, Mac, Linux, PS4, Switch, and PS Vita.

Cloudpunk

Cloudpunk is a narrative driving game where you take on the role of a courier in the vertical city of Nivalis. You’ve signed up for the illicit delivery service known as Cloudpunk, and your shady job will force you to make choices that will have consequences for your future—and that of others.

VirtuaVerse

VirtuaVerse is a point-and-click adventure game in the vein of LucasArts classics (and with a similarly fiendish challenge). In a world that’s hooked up to virtual reality and artificial intelligence, Nathan is an off-the-grid smuggler and cracker who must search for his missing girlfriend and unearth a techno-conspiracy.

Satellite Reign is a real-time strategy game that serves as a spiritual successor to the classic Syndicate series. Set in a city known only as ‘The City’, you control a team of 4 agents as they work their way up the corporate ladder by any means necessary. Apart from solo strategising, the game also allows for 4-player co-op.

The Red Strings Club
