Chapter 4 Exploration

As before, to start Chapter 4, we must get to the gatehouse again. This time, instead of a key, you’ll find a letter from Arabella’s sister.

Botany Manor Walkthrough - Chapter 4 (Exploration, Sapphire Gloom)

This letter contains the clue for access to the Library: that the code for the door is the three initials of Arabella’s sister’s name. We already know from the letter that her first name is Elizabeth, so the first letter is ‘E’.

Now return to Botany Manor, specifically the Main Hall, and view the wall immediately to your left as you enter. Here, you’ll find a family tree framed on the wall, as well as a letter on a golden tray below.

The family tree lists Arabella’s sister as ‘Elizabeth Ann Greene’, which would suggest that her initials are ‘EAG’. However, if you read the letter below, you’ll learn that Arabella requested the genealogist to display maiden names instead of current names.

Therefore, Elizabeth’s current name, which she would use as her initial, is ‘Elizabeth Ann Hopgood’. This is because she is married to Arthur Hopgood, and so that makes her initials EAH.

Now go to the Grand Staircase and go all the way up. Use the library hall letter lock and enter the initials EAH.

Open the door and enter, then go right through the door to start the chapter proper, gain 4 new plants in your Herbarium, and access the library.

Upon entering the library, you’ll find a puzzle to your left. There’s five plates that need to be pushed as buttons, but the order of pressing them is a mystery.

Scattered across the library, you’ll find both open and closed books that will provide you the clues to pressing those plates.

The first clue is a story that can be found right as you enter the library: “The Fox and the Crow”.

For the next clue, a closed book, go to the back of the library (near the stained glass window), and turn left to find “Wonders of the Night Sky”.

Now go up the stairs (by exiting the library proper) to reach the upper floor of the library.

Here you’ll find another book straight ahead with the story: “The Golden Fish”. Finally, go to the other side of the library to find the remaining two clues: the book “The Rising Sun” and the story “The Hare and the Tortoise”.

These clues may seem enigmatic at first, but the trick is to only pay attention to the time of day referred to in each story and book. We want to go through this time of day linearly to solve the puzzle.

So the correct order of plates to push, based on the stories and books, is “Dawn – Fish – Hare – Crow – Night”. In other words, going left-to-right, you must push the plates in this order: “3 – 2 – 5 – 4 – 1”.

On solving the puzzle, you’ll find the private study of Mary Greene – Arabella’s paternal grandmother.

You can start picking up plant clues here, but we’ll continue exploring for now. Pick up the key on the old table to the right as you enter.

This is the key to the Study. Return to the Library Hall to find the door to the Study and use the key here to open the door.

At this point, you need to successfully plant the Sapphire Gloom to progress.

The Sapphire Gloom will help us get rid of the tree branches blocking the door to the North wing of the manor.

As the Sapphire Gloom only requires two clues, we’ll cover it right here.

Sapphire Gloom Seeds and Clues

Sapphire Gloom seeds can be found in the study next to the only chair in the room.

The Sapphire Gloom requires 2 clues. Here’s where to find them:

1. Tree Diseases – Study – The open book on the desk to the left of the Sapphire Gloom seeds.

2. Mushroom Book – Study – The open book on the study desk near the three windows.

Botany Manor Walkthrough - Chapter 4 (Exploration, Sapphire Gloom)

Sapphire Gloom Explanation

From the Tree Diseases book, we learn that the tree in the Main Hall is suffering from the Root Parasite – a fungus that leeches nutrients and causes the tree to dry out.

We learn from the Mushroom Book that mushrooms can consume a tree by growing on it. As Arabella’s comment on the book notes, they need not always be removed immediately.

In our case, we can use the carnivorous Sapphire Gloom mushroom to deal with the parasite on the tree in the main hall.

Sapphire Gloom Process

Plant the Sapphire Gloom seeds as usual and remember to water them. The mushroom will sprout quite naturally.

Simply take this mushroom to the saucer near the roots of the big tree in the main hall, and the Sapphire Gloom will take care of the rest.

Chapter 4 Exploration (Continued)

Now return to the top of the grand staircase and go through the door on the left, past the Library Hall door. You will now be able to access the north side of the first floor of the manor. Do so.

You will now find yourself in the corridor. To your right is the door to the Attic, but it’s locked.

Go left instead and you’ll find two doors, one on each side of the window. The door to the right goes to the Master Bedroom, while the door to the left goes to the Bell Tower access.

For now, take the door to the left. Here, you’ll find a key to the attic on a tray, on a table to the left of the window. Pick up the key.

Return to the Attic door and open it. You can now go inside and go up the stairs to the attic, marking the end of your exploration of the manor building.

There’s more exploration of the grounds to be done, but that’s in Chapter 5. For now, get planting.
