8. Sight of Plants – Attic – Open book on a table to the left as you go up to the attic. This is the same table that has the rusty pig.

Nightfall Explanation

We learn from Grandma’s Research that the Nightfall only blooms at sunset during a particular time of year.

We learn from the Sunset Paintings the pattern of colors that each month’s sunset has.

We learn from the Fairy Story that there is a cultural legend of the Nightfall ‘trapping’ fairies in its petals at night.

We learn from the Trapped Moths pamphlet that moths can become trapped inside a flower bud if it closes in the morning. We can infer that the ‘fairy’ legend comes from these trapped moths.

We learn from the Trapped Fairy Painting that the ‘trapped fairy’ has brown-and-red wings.

We learn from the Moths of England poster what the moths of England look like. The ‘Garden Tiger Moth’ has brown-and-red wings that correspond to the fairy in the Trapped Fairy Painting.

Finally, we learn from the Moth Spotting Calendar that the Garden Tiger (moth) is found in South West England in the month of September.

Therefore, we can infer that as Garden Tiger moths routinely get trapped in Nightfalls, the Nightfall blooms in September.

We learn from the Sight of Plants book that according to theories, plants can ‘see’ the color of light and tell the time of day. We can infer that this may include the Nightfall, as it can accurately detect September sunsets.

If we can recreate the colors of September sunsets for the Nightfall, we can get it to bloom.

Nightfall Process

Plant a Nightfall in the usual way and remember to water it.

Go up to the attic and place the Nightfall on the saucer in front of the ‘Magic Lantern’ slide projector.

According to Grandma’s research with sunset paintings, we learn that September sunsets are: Blue, Yellow, Orange, Red.

Open the box of slides to the left of the Magic Lantern and place the slides in the same order as noted by Arabella’s grandmother.

Press the red ‘project slides’ button now, and the Nightfall should bloom.

Cradle Fern Seeds and Clues

The Cradle Fern seeds can be found in the Master Bedroom, on a study desk straight ahead as you enter from the Corridor.

The Cradle Fern requires 5 clues. Here’s where to find them:

1. Bird Eggs – Study – A collection of bird eggs on the desk with the ‘Tree Diseases’ book.

2. Fern Painting – Corridor – Framed painting roughly in the middle of the corridor, next to where the chandelier is.

3. Letter About Melodies – Bell Tower – Inner Bell Tower room, it’s a green-edged letter on a desk next to the window.

4. Bird Calls – Bell Tower – Up the stairs in the Bell Tower room, on a table next to two red feathers.

5. Petition – Master Bedroom – On the study desk below where you found the Cradle Fern seeds.

Cradle Fern Explanation

We learn from the Cradle Fern painting that the Cradle Fern is home to eggs of a particular kind.

We learn from the Bird Egg collection that these eggs belong to the Crested Owl.

We learn from the Letter About Melodies that certain plants are sensitive to sound, such as melodies from their natural environment.

We learn from the Petition that hunts have caused some bird species to decline – including ones with ‘chime-like calls’.

We can infer from this that the melody of the Crested Owl’s calls is what causes the Cradle Fern to bloom.

We learn from the Bird Calls book the notes that the Crested Owl’s calls use.

Cradle Fern Process

Prepare a pot with the Cradle Fern seeds. Water the plant, and take it up to the Bell Tower.

Place the pot on the saucer below the bells.

Then, using the Bird Calls book as a guide, ring the bells E, C, D, E, G, F, in that order.

Ringing the last bell should automatically cause the Cradle Fern to bloom.
