Return to Monkey Island Guide – Part 1 (Forgiveness Frog)

Welcome to the Into Indie Games guide to Return to Monkey Island! This guide was written with Hard Mode in mind, but Casual Mode users need not fear as the guide will note wherever the casual mode is different.

Part 1: A Friendly Place
Section 4 (Forgiveness Frog)
Head back to Low Street the way you came and enter the International House of Mojo. Look again to where the knife was, and you’ll find a dead frog. Examine it and then buy it. Return to the Governor’s Mansion with the frog and give it to Carla. If you’re playing on Casual Mode, she will accept it right away. Otherwise, she’ll reject the frog.
If you’re playing in Hard Mode, you will now need to write on the frog, which the rest of this section is all about. You already have a writing implement on you in the form of the ‘state of the art’ pen. You can write an apology on the frog by using the pen on the frog, but Carla will still reject it because the apology isn’t personal enough.
We’ll have to learn more about Carla to make the apology more personal.
Head out of the mansion and return to the Docks. (Note that you can use the ‘back way to the island’s interior’ next to the mansion to travel quickly), and check the poster of Carla located near the path leading to the lookout. There’ll be a pelican near it. Examine the poster and note what her slogan is (it changes per playthrough).
Next, go to Low Street and examine the plaque on the statue of Carla that’s located near the path to the docks (it’s where you met Elaine). This will give you a location of Carla’s exploits.
Now use the pen on the frog and pen your letter as… “Dear Carla”, “Sorry for losing the book…”, and then her slogan and the location of her actions. The last line can be anything you like. Return to Carla in the governor’s mansion and hand her the frog.
